KIRKLAND, Wash. -- A Kirkland police officer shot a man who allegedly drove his SUV directly at the officer while trying to get away late Monday.

Kirkland police Lt. Mike Murray said the incident began just after 11 p.m. when officers on foot patrol heard a woman yelling for help outside the Motel 6 at 12010 120th Place NE.

The woman told officers she was the victim of a crime and pointed them toward a man who was running through the parking lot.

Officers ordered the man to stop, Murray said, but he got into an SUV and began speeding out of the lot.

When the man swerved directly at one of the officers, the officer fired a single shot, hitting the man in the shoulder, Murray said.

The man kept driving but crashed at a car dealership parking lot about four blocks away. He got out of the SUV and ran off, but was quickly captured.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to be treated for the gunshot wound and was listed in stable condition.

No one else was injured and the King County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. It was not immediately clear what the man may have done to the woman who initially called for help.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on paid leave, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
