OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Police are looking for a man who threw a liquid at a judge's face Monday night.
It was around 9:25 p.m. when Judge Michael "Brett" Buckley heard a knock on his front door. When he answered, a man threw a clear liquid into the judge's face, then turned and walked away without saying a word.
The judge initially didn't sense any reaction to the substance, but later went to the hospital for treatment of skin irritation, police said. He was to be released Tuesday morning.
Samples of the liquid were taken at the scene and are being analyzed in order to determine the exact substance, police said.
The man who tossed the liquid remains at large and police do not know the motive behind the attack.
"Honestly at this point we have no leads as to who might have been the perpetrator is in this case," said Laura Wohl with Olympia police. "We don't have any reason to believe it was connected with him being a judge or that it wasn't."
Buckley told detectives he didn't recognize the man from any recent cases he's handled. In a statement released Tuesday, he thanked those who have shown support.
"My family and I greatly appreciate the thoughts and prayers of those who have contacted the court and my family," he wrote. "Pplease allow us some time to recover both physically and mentally from the shock of this unexpected assault."
Buckley described the man as being in his 20s with a dark complexion and black hair, standing about 6 feet tall of medium build. The man had a short beard and was wearing a maroon-colored knit cap, a dark sweater, and lighter colored khaki pants. If you have any information, you're asked to call Olympia police at (360) 709-2793.

I'm with @Tattooed_Angel on this one. If you don't know them, don't open the door.
I never open my door if it is someone I don't know. I'd talk to them through the door. It's sad that it comes to that but in this day and age you never know what a stranger's intentions are.
@Tattooed_Angel I have a NO SOLICITORS sign right above my doorbell.  If I look and see someone I don't recognize I simply ignore them.  I don't care if they can hear the tv or have seen me at the top of the stairs.  I will never open the door to someone I don't know and have taught my 8 year old daughter to do the same.
Slimeball. I hope they catch this sicko LOSER.Â
The guy walked away? If I was the person hit with some liquid, that guy would not have made it off my porch. The cops would have to bring a broom and mop to remove this criminal.
How disturbing. If it was biological, hopefully they can get some DNA from it.Â
Ah, it was probably just some gin.
So we are only supposed to report if the guy hasn't changed clothes, right? Or are we pulling a mass arrest?
This judge needs to pack some heat
@skulls98040 ah yes, the aggressive testosterone brainless approach.
Â
by the time the judge could have reacted to the substance being thrown in his face, the man would have been walking away and thereby no longer being a threat to the judge.   using the gun at that point - against a person who was no longer a threat and was retreating would have landed the judge in jail as he was no longer in immenent danger.
Â
There's a time to use a gun to defend yourself. this was not one of them.
@FormerMarineSgt thanks for the compliment
Why do people in this day and age keep opening thier doors before knowing who it is???? Â And especially if you are a judge and know you have many people out there angry at you???You still hear many crime stories of people getting robbed or raped when they just swing thier doors open like they are living in Mayberry. Boggles my mind. Guy probably threw some "yellow" liquid at judge.Â
@Silver Lioness Most of us don't feel the need to live in fear of our own shadows. Cases of someone just knocking on your door to do you harm are so rare as to be almost nonexistent.
Â
People don't respect anyone or anything anymore.
@DDG a small group of people, they just breed with great enthusiasm and get a lot of press.
