Mukilteo woman gets 30 years for torturing girl
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A 35-year-old Mukilteo woman was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for starving, beating and burning a 10-year-old girl.
Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Michael Downes told Mary Mazalic her actions were "stark proof of how low humans can sink," the Daily Herald reports.
Mazalic was convicted in September of child assault, criminal mistreatment and witness tampering.
The abused girl is the adopted sister of her boyfriend, 43-year-old Derron Alexis who is awaiting trial. She was sent to live with the couple in Mukilteo in 2010. She weighed only 51 pounds when she was rescued in August 2011 and is now living with foster parents.
According to court documents, the girl was suffering from severe malnutrition and had cigarette burns and "whip cord" injuries all over her body.
In the year the girl lived with Mazalic, investigators said she was abused her in a number of ways.
Mazalic often made the girl take off her clothes, then beat her with extension cords, a belt and even a piece of wire, all while gagging the girl with a squeeze ball or a sock to keep her from screaming, detectives said. These beating usually took place in the garage or the basement of the home, they said.
Mazalic often threatened to kill the girl, and even made at least one attempt to do so.
She tried to drown the girl by holding her under water in the bathtub, the documents said, and held a knife to the girl's throat and told her, "I'm going to kill you" to "show her she 'wasn't kidding.'" Mazalic told the girl she'd kill her and dump her body in a lake, and added, "I've done it before and would do it again."
The emaciated girl told investigators she was made to sleep in the bathtub in the basement of the home "hundreds of times," as well as in a tent in the backyard. When she was forced to sleep outdoors, she was not always given a pillow or a blanket, and the doors to the house were locked, she said.

Hard to imagine why someone would act like this. I wonder if she was abused as a child? She's got to be totally out of touch with reality.
Humanity derailed again... I have no way of weighing the punishment against the crime other than how tight my gut is getting reading this. I do know that the 10 year old is now on a completely unknown tragetory for the rest of her life. I hope it works out for her.
This is sick. She should get life without parole.
Some people are just pure evil.
They showed her on the news last night. She looks ferral, like an animal.Â
What happened to her that she would do such inhuman things to a child
And those who murder behind the wheel DUI using a vehicle as their weapon of choice get 6 months to a year at that.Â
@HallandOates I don't agree those who kill in a DUI should go unpunished but at least they are not tortured. I don't see the comparison.
This thing cannot possible have a single ounce of humanity in her/it. 30 years is not long enough.Â
30 years for torture? Why did Bush and Obama get off scott free?
@T_BONE_WALKER  Obama didn't authorize torture. Nice try though.Â
Too light on the sentence judge.. should've made it close to double. I can't believe they are doing away with the death penalty in Washington, this is a prime example of someone who needs it. This is just cruel, inhumane and sickening. No child should ever have to go through this and this woman is a MONSTER. 30 years isn't long enough, I hope she rots in hell. She should have been given life or the death penalty. Hopefully her fellow inmates will show her how it feels to be mistreated and abused! Crazy B****.
See why I believe in capital punishment? She will be out in 15 on good behavior and only be 50. Young enough to torture another child. With any luck her inmates will get to her first since we all know how much they respect child torturers.Â
These people need to be exterminated.
There is no reason or excuse that could justify what they did except to satisfy some sick urges in their twisted mind.
@wysoumible we are certainly not collectively responsible for the defective humans in society, so you can put that psycho babbeldy BS to bed right now.
Not enough time in that sentence! She should have gotten at least that much JUST for the child assault. Then another 10 years for criminal mistreatment then add on some for the witness tampering, with no possibility for parole on all counts.
Euthanize this animal instead of taxpayers housing and feeding it for that long. I cannot believe people want to outlaw the death penalty! Sure it is not 'right' to kill, but what did and could have happened to the victim was not right either. This 'Mary' is unfit for society, ever, so why keep her around?
I hope the other inmates in prison return the favor to this thing that is not even human. What a worthless piece of crap. People like this should be publicly hung to show what happens to pieces of sh** like this. I hope she gets beat to death in prison.
Mary Mazalic, I hope you read these comments in this forum.
People like that make me sick to my stomach. Abusing poor defenseless children is a cowardly and despicable act.
I sure hope she spends the whole 30 years in prison, there should be no parole or good behavior leniency for this one. I also hope they start investigating her claim that she has done this before about the murder and throwing a body in the lake. This woman is horrific and monstrous, she actually deserves to be drowned herself.  That poor child - man - I have known children later in life that went through some horrible abuse and they made it to adulthood, scarred and with low esteem, but they made it and I was glad to have known them. My prayers are with this girl. What happens to children needs to be punished much more severely - the abusers/murderers get away with it in the courts, they go out and do it more and worse.
I just don't understand the sentencing guidelines in this state.  That guy the other day who plead guilty to MURDERING a child got less time than this lady got for ABUSING a child. Not saying what she got is too little, just that it makes no sense to me.
I can't ever imagine subjecting a child in my care to this kind of torture & I don't even like kids. This kind of situation makes even me want to take this poor kid home & love her enough that she'll forget the horror she's gone through!
 @katiemcc:Â
In this case, according to the report on KIRO last night, the judge went over & beyond the "standard" sentencing range. I think they need to get rid of the range completely, simply set a "bare minimum" and then allow judges to add extra years beyond that. But the minimum needs to be HARSH, no more slap on the wrist crap.
I can't even fathom the sheer HORROR this poor child went through.
I wish they'd do same thing to the woman in prison as she's done to the child.
Â
I hope the girl can at least eventually have a decent life and experience love and joy. She so deserves it.
The more we pound on Mazalic, an obviously deeply troubled woman who had no business caring for anyone, much less a child, the more we can selfishly let ourselves off the hook for the societal and institutional failures that caused this circumstance in the first place. By tossing Mazalic into a hole for three decades at the behest of a judge who spares the true culprit in this - and in fact even fails to mention it, we have decided that we want this to happen again and again, and simply respond each time by finding another life to ruin after the fact.
@wysoumible I agree which is why she should die by the needle.Â
@wysoumible I'm guessing you figure the true culprit is the current or recently past president, or senate majority, or congressional majority, or some other political wing?
@wysoumible - so tell us, wise one, who is the 'real' culprit in this if not Mazalic? I don't suppose you're going to blame the child?
@wysoumible Yeah, who is the true culprit? Sounds to me like that b*i*t*c*h is the one responsible.
@wysoumible Do tell. Who is the true culprit?
I would say send her to one of the Russian prisons
She should never be let out into the light again.
This gal should have gotten life in prison-not just 30 years!!
@Debbie Arefi She will be out by 65 (likely earlier for "good behavior")... just in time to collect Social Security, right? Just one free meal after another.
