Woman found dead; husband tells KOMO News: I killed her
TACOMA, Wash. - A man who called KOMO News to say he had killed his wife and wanted the message posted on Facebook was arrested Thursday after a high-speed chase, authorities said.
Sara Barrett, 42, was found dead from "homicidal violence" about 6 a.m. Thursday in a room in the Motel 6 at 1811 S 76th Street in Tacoma, said Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.
Police began searching for the woman late Wednesday after her husband, Tony James Barrett, called KOMO News and said he had killed her. KOMO News then immediately notified law enforcement authorities.
Deputies later found the woman's car and impounded it at her workplace, a Pier 1 Imports distribution center in Dupont. They found what they believed to be blood in the car.
Police in Tacoma later located the woman's husband, who sped away from officers in his vehicle. They pursued him across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge at speeds approaching 100 mph.
Spike strips were used to stop the husband's vehicle on Highway 16 west of Tacoma. The suspect then attacked officers with a crowbar, Troyer said, and officers used a police dog to subdue and detain him
In his earlier phone call to KOMO News, the husband said he wanted a message put on Facebook: "I just killed my wife ... I want you to put it on your Facebook."
The man told the KOMO News assignment desk that he and his wife had been together for 28 years.
"It was supposed to be 'til death do us part, but she wouldn't .... " he said.
The man then would not say where his wife could be found, but said, "They'll find her tonight or by tomorrow."
The assignment desk asked the caller if there was someone we could notify, and he said “No, I’m not going to be here much longer.”
When the assignment desk asked if they could contact police, he disconnected.
The Tacoma School District confirmed Thursday that Tony Barrett works for the district as a warehouse specialist, delivering products to Tacoma schools. He has worked for the district since July 2001, officials said.
Family members said they were shocked by the killing.
"It's been rocky for a couple of years - they've been off and on - but this is shocking, this is something that nobody would have expected him to do," said Sara Barrett's niece, Candice Saucedo. "He loved her; he'd been with her for 20-some years. I still don't believe he did it, I don't understand it."
Saucedo said Sara was a kind, caring person.
"She was the most caring, beautiful, wonderful person. She had a huge heart, and for this to happen - oh my gosh. I can't even explain - she was perfect; everybody loved her," she said. "She just became a grandmother. ... She was so excited, and for him to just take all this away, its just ridiculous."
"Hopefully he'll spend the rest of his days where he belongs and he won't be able to hurt anybody else," she said.
On Thursday, Sara's youngest son, Tyler Barrett, spoke about the loss of his mother.
"It hasn't even quite hit me yet. It's all a big blur," he said. "It's a tragedy that I could never imagine. She was just so kind. She gave more to others than herself."
Tyler also spoke about his father, who is accused of killing Sara.
"He's just a sick man. A sick man. I'm ashamed he's my father," Tyler said.
Court records show that Tony Barrett also was charged with attacking his wife for unexplained reasons in 2007, holding a pillow over her face until she nearly suffocated.
The couple's grown son broke down the bedroom door and stopped the attack, and Tony Barrett fled from the home when he learned police were on the way.
He later pleaded guilty to third-degree assault for that attack, serving one day in jail and two years under Department of Corrections supervision.
He was ordered not to have any "hostile contact" with Sara Barrett for five years. That order expired three weeks ago on Feb. 25.
On Thursday evening, about three dozen people came to the second-story balcony outside the Tacoma Motel 6, where Sara died. Some had balloons. Others carried candles. They wanted to remember her.

@Noz4news glad I didn't get THAT call
What a heartbreak for the famly and friends...especially her sons.  It appears that her husband 'wanted his cake and eat it too" or whatever the saying. A 'free life with what one described as having girflriends' and then go back home and abuse/terrorize the wife and children.  God forbid 'she' calls a halt to it and tries to rebuild her life. I hope he fries but of course he won't with this foul legal system. The ONLY THING women can do in these situations is do your paperwork - the restraining orders and all and then go down to whoever sells guns and buy yourself a 22 (ie. small gun) that will fit on your leg/slacks/underwear/anywhere. That is the only way you're going to save your own life. Questions can be answered later. Blow him away and don't hesitate.
What is wrong with some of you? Do you not think about the fact that, eventually, some of this woman's family members may look at these comments??? What about her sons? Instead of thinking about their pain, some of you are on here making rude comments to each other. Grow up! RIP Sara Barrett.

This was for trying to kill her. So they slapped his hand. What a surprise that this time he managed to do it. Too damn bad the Police did not just save us all a lot of money.

@yourbuddy You are not even worth the effort to flag as the stupid POS you are...better to leave you hanging by your lack of intelligence - exposed for all to see.Â
@OrcasThunder
You said it, thank you Orcas, look at some of his/her other (mindless, and ignorant) comments on other news articles.Â
@Skillet77Â @OrcasThunder From what I see it's not so much "ignorance" as an inability to relate to normal human beings in a meaningful way - which results in a bully lashing out at innocents, with no regard for common decency or manners.Â
Normally I would pity such a lost soul, but in this case I can't find the interest to feel anything for this degenerate chunk of meat.
@OrcasThunder @yourbuddy I don't really believe all the things I write, I just like to raise counter-points to create discussion. Maybe I am a stupid POS, If you guys want to get me kicked off komo forum go ahead, I will be just fine I promise. Are you saying there is no reason a person should be killed?
My deepest heartfelt thoughts are with Sara's family and friends. May PEACE and LOVE surround them.
This is messed up. The guy put in jail for only ONE day,for murder and a near murder in 2007.
 @Ted C. Bayes
"I would never in a million years suspect that he was capable of something like this"
Umm.. really? The fact that he tried to suffocate his wife in 2007 by holding a pillow over her face didn't clue you in on the fact that he was capable of killing that very person years later?@Joey Ketcham : Did you consider even for a 2nd that the person who wrote those words may not have known that the husband tried to kill his wife in 2007... did that occur to you?  Do you think these guys go around telling people that they do things like that?
My heart aches. I've knows Tony my entire life. We're cousins born 11 days apart. We grew up together. I've knows Sara since we were all 15 years old. I cared very much for them both. This news comes as a great shock and I'm not sure how to process it yet. They've always had their fair share of problems over the years, but I would never in a million years suspect that he was capable of something like this. Sara was a wonderful person full of life and capable of making everyone around her happier just by being near her. Depsite all of the trials and tribulations they've endured over the years, I know that he always loved her very much. I can't imagine any reason for him to have done this. All I can do is sit here confused, angry, and saddened to tears knowing that someone I care so much for has been taken so tragically by someone else that I care so much for. I hope one day the family will know the reasons for this to have happened. And I pray for their 3 sons. Please, Lord, give them the strength to get through this. I will always remember the good time we had together growing up. Your sense of humor. Your smile. Rest in peace, Sara. I love you.Â
@Ted C. Bayes :  I am so sorry for your loss.  I feel for you and your entire family and all of Sara's other friends.  I understand your shock, but this is probably not the best place to come to talk about that because commenters on these sorts of stories can be very cruel and heartless.  Their comments will only upset you more.  It is not your fault that this happened.  It's his!  Honestly!
My heart goes out to you and yours.
@Ted C. Bayes No offense, and sorry for your loss, but perhaps back in 2006 when he tried to kill her, and the other abuse before and after, and the restraining order against him...perhaps that might have been a clue that Tony was a complete and total azzhole?  Problems??  Struggling to pay the utility bill is a problem...domestic violence is sick and depraved.
What a sad and tragic ending to this mothers life. She had children and family that loved her dearly. If her husband was so unhappy then he should have just left-yeah, its easier said than done but can be done. But no, he ruined peoples lives by being such a coward. Just looking in his eyes you can see how calculating he is, I'm sure he has no regrets. Even though these are horrible circumstances I'm glad he didn't hurt his children or other family members. I hope he becomes someone prison b**ch because we know we'll be paying for him to rot in jail the rest of his miserable life. I hope he's tormented the rest of his life.
They've got to take the "til death do us part" out of the wedding vows. Sexist creeps like this use it to kill their wives. Notice he didn't feel like killing himself?
@the tide That because he's a low life, pile of fill in the blank, COWARD.
@LesNews eu.... ok lol!!!

"The suspect attacked officers with a crowbar!" and he was NOT SHOT ! Ohhhhhhhhh, after seeing the photo Nowwwwwwwww I understand ! Wink, wink..........
@LoJack Since the cops have no problem shooting white people in my city, I'm going to guess he wasn't shot because the officer didn't have time to draw but had to fend off a crowbar attack. Still, sad this guy is going to get to live in our system now. And, killing his wife means he won't get the dp and will be out in a few years.Â
 Sara was one of my mothers really good friends, they worked together as did I every summer growing up. Sara was such a wonderful, positive woman that was loving and caring to everyone she always lit up the room. None of us at ever liked Tony he was a cheating, abusive bastard . I still remember the night I seen him at the casino with another woman... the look he gave me was very disturbing, I will never forget that evil vindictive look in his eyes. Sara deserves justice, I hope he gets punished to the fullest.Â
I hope the boys are doing ok. I can't even imagine what they are going through right now. Hope all Sara's family and friends comfort one another during this hard time. We will all miss her dearly... How could you not she was such a wonderful woman. I wish I could come pay my respects with the rest of the ones that loved and knew her but I live to far (Hawaii). But I will today pick some flowers, make a lei and paddle out into the ocean/surf and say my prayers and let the lei go... We will all miss you Sara. Â Â Â
@Dacia Rollins She looks like such a wonderful, loving woman. I am so sorry for your loss, what an unfathomable tragedy.
He should have been locked up for a long time for trying to strangle her back in 07!  I wish the laws were tougher and the sentences longer for domestic violence situations. I also wish that there would be mandatory counseling for the families involved (both the victim and the abuser). I say the victim too because they tend to go back to their abusers or go from one abusive relationship to another. This is a sad situation all around. My sincere condolences to the Sara's family.  I'm sure she was a wonderful woman who did not deserve for this monster to do to her what he did.
@TravisMayfield disagree. There are plenty of non-lethal ways to get on tv. His own demons (mental illness? Drugs? Other?) drove him to it.
@GrrlGotGame @TravisMayfield Nope. Abusers like that are not mentally ill. They're just insecure control freaks.  If he was mentally ill, these guys would be doing those things to everyone they know. Think about it. it's control and lack of respect for the other person as their own person.  That's what makes it so horrible. it's not an anger issue or an illness you can cure. It's a personality weakness that was allowed to fester because they usually only abuse or torment the one person closest to them, and present another face to the world. Â
@DTÂ I agree that SOB liked to be in control. I'm sure he'll use the insanity plea bargain when he goes to trial.Â
@GrrlGotGame Someone said it's giving the real killer a 'pass' by somehow blaming some external force like 'the media'
This sleeze went straight to the press to ensure his 15 minutes of fame, and KOMO played along.
Personally I wish the press would redact the names and photos of all these people thus denying them the 'fame' they seek, which might lead to fewer copycat crimes.
Now there's someone who should have had his right to have a gun taken away...there were HUGE red flags...just saying...
@Diane Charmley With the domestic violence conviction I am assuming that he could not legally own a handgun. I may be wrong. I know that he would not have been able to get a CWP.
@Surveyor1
I may be assuming, but I don't think anyone who murders gives a flying leap about "Legally" owning a gun, or being legal in anything they do.
@Surveyor1
Say what? what makes you think I was assuming or even dare to know what you were thinking? I was just making a comment, like you, sure didn't mean to offend in any way, that statement was not a slam to you or anything you said, sorry you took it that way, is "snarky" the new hip word now? just asking, no offense intended.
@Skillet77Â Really????? I never would have though about that. I was answering Diane's post so no need to get snarky and assume you know what I think.
@Diane Charmley He nearly killed her with a pillow in 2007. Did they take away his right to have a pillow? Just saying.
@Diane Charmley Diane, now you've done it. Enjoy being ridiculed by a bunch of unemployed losers.  Â
@lakeview You don't have to be unemployed to be a loser. You're living proof.

@Diane CharmleyLots of ways to commit "homicidal violence"....
@Diane Charmley did not see a gun in the story
@Komo Dragon @Diane Charmley Yes, I do see that there was no gun involved...just so much in the news about gun violence I made a big assumption....I'm really feeling sad for the family and especially after reading what people who knew Sara had to say...Violence does come in many forms...the pillow, the crowbar, the pen...
Ms Sara Barrett, may you rest in peace.
My condolences to the family. Very sad indeed.
Motel 6, we'll leave the light on for ya.
Women with a gun in the home are nearly 3x more likely to be murdered.
In domestic violence disputes, women are 8x more likely to be homicide victims or attempted homicide victims when the abuser had access to guns. Â
@lakeview There was NO gun involved. People need to listen and/or read better. Enough with the gun control crap. This was DV and murder without the use of a gun. Yes, it can be done.
@lakeview That should'nt bother you much considering that you dont like women.
@lakeview Nothing said about a gun. Nothing said about a home. So, you got any other "relevant" statistics? (we get your anti-gun bias) Check out some facts on the number of times an armed person (either sex) successfully defended themselves when armed...Oh yeah, facts get in the way of your own truth...
@lakeview
Your agenda is showing AGAIN. At no point was there mention of a gun.

@komoispropaganda I'm glad you copied his text and put it into your reply, because he deleted the offending message that proves he is a Troll.  Interesting how he goes back and edits his stuff. What a freaking tool.
@Sissy I see Baked View erased his original comment, which proved he is a Troll, using his own words, but left the response to you.  This guy is an F'in tool to be sure. Â
@lakeview   " I enjoy watching you guys crap the bed over it though"
The very definition of a troll. See lakeview, no one is calling you names, just taking your word for it.
here are some more.
Number of deaths for leading causes of deathHere is a fact hippo's kill 2900 people  a year.texting 6000. obesity 30000.
makes as much sense as you bakedview.
@Sissy @lakeview I'm sorry that facts upset you. It's too bad that you can't respond in a mature way.Â
@lakeview Spoken like a true Troll!
@lakeviewAnd nearly 100% more likely when soft judges let abusers out of jail with weak sentences. I take it facts were not enough to shut you up then?
@lakeview  Where is the gun in this story? It's not, but there is a crowbar. This is a KOMO story and if she was murdered by gun, you can bet KOMO would exploit it.
Where does it say anything about a gun? I heard a crow bar as he came a the cops. Push your junk eles where bakeview.
@Gunnartheviking I was not going to respond to him. You are well aware he will make any story all about his personal agenda.
Yeshe is a troll for sure but sometime makes sick with nonsense and closed mind.
