Mom accused of burning 6-year-old son's hands as punishment
EVERETT, Wash. -- Police have arrested a Lynnwood woman accused of burning her 6-year-old's hands as punishment.
Karina Torrescano Hernandez, 27, was arrested Wednesday night for investigation for domestic violence.
School officials first heard about the boy's burn from another student on Sept. 25, according to the statement of probable cause. But when they asked the boy how he had gotten injured, he refused to answer and began crying.
Officials examined the boy's hands and found "red marks on the palms" that looked like they "could have been caused by an electric stove element or something similar," the document said.
Investigators, with the help of an interpreter, questioned the boy's mother who said she believed her son burned his hands while trying to toast marshmallow on the stove. Hernandez said she often naps in the afternoons because she works the night shift, and she believes the incident occurred while she and her 3-year-old son were sleeping.
The boy hid the injuries from her for two days, the mother said, then later claimed he had hurt his hands while playing on the monkey bars. Hernandez said she did not seek medical care for the boy, because she was afraid the state would take him away from her.
But the boys' babysitter told investigators a different story.
The woman said she had heard the boy had been intentionally burned "because he had misbehaved," the statement said. The babysitter said she had been worried about the boys because they seemed "exceptionally compliant" and because they were worried about angering their mother, whom she described as "stressed."
A doctor at Children's Hospital examined the boy's hands and determined there were four separate burn patterns, "indicating multiple contacts, not one," the statement said. The doctor also found a scar on the boy's head, neck shoulder and buttocks.
Investigators questioned the boys, who each admitted their mother had burned the 6-year-old's hands on the stove. The older boy said she had dones so "because I touched an iPad," and added she had poured salt on his hands afterward causing "more owie."
The boys added their mother often hit them with a big spoon, a shoe or a "witch's broom."
When detectives went to talk to Hernandez on Wednesday, she told them her attorney had advised her not to answer any more questions. Police arrested her and booked her into jail for investigation of assault of a child in the second degree.
Friend and neighbor Lisa Infante said she was shocked to learn about the alleged incident, which she believes is the result of a big misunderstanding.
"None of us here that live here could even imagine her doing something like that to her child. She really takes really good care of her kids," said Infante. "She's a good person. A very good person.”
Hernandez is being held on $25,000 bail. She has no prior criminal record.

Fry her in the chair as someone else suggested.
This sounds like a start to a lifetime movie.Â
Hopefully our judicial system won't do its typical and give her a slap on the wrists and the kids go back to her. But likely it will. SO sad. Then in a few months or even a year, we will be reading another story on KOMO about this same mother who abused to the point of serious harm or death and we will then be in yet again another uproar to DSHS & the judicial system. When will we learn!!! Take a look at the TX case of that mother who abused and glued her child's hands to the wall, 99 years. If all is true in this case, then this mother should loose her children and go to prison for a long time! Harsher punishment from the beginning!!!
KIRO had this story last night, and in their film/footage they interview Lisa Infante. She *claimed* it was all a misunderstanding, that there is a "language barrier" because the accused does not speak engliush.
Â
I have some english for her...you are a lying, sadistic sack of sh!t to do that to your son, and I hope they DO take your children away from you. Is you iPad so much more important that you have to burn (and possibly cause permanent damage to his hands) you son? I hope & pray they throw the book at you.
Â
Praise to the babysitter who spoke up in defense of the boys.
Yea, she sounds like a real good person alright.......NOT. That poor little boy.I have a feeling that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Withes broom is right. Â I have four children ages 10, 3 ,2 , and 2 months. Â I am stressed out beyond belief and don't get much sleep. Â I would never think of doing anything like this to my children in a million years. Â There is something wrong with this woman and she is dangerous. Â I am so sick of hearing about these woman who do things to their children, it's pure evil and there is no excuse. Â Â
If the article in fact reflects the actual situation, then I would be inclined to believe that this woman
is one of those rare cases where a mother should never have conceived a child.  Parenthood
is a responsibility and a blessing that this mother does not seem to understand.
Hope the media updates us on this....please please please do not return these innocent victims to their abuser!  I know someone beginning the adoption process who would be perfect to care for these kids; I imagine their are many wonderful people wanting to be parents who would treasure them.
And an other child abuse case CPS missed....(sigh).
Hope the boy will be place in a good home.
The "mom"... Well, can't say what I really think about her, my comment would be deleted.
pouring salt into a raw wound? "stressed out" so she beats her babies? she sounds evil...never let her come near a child again
@my_opinions She IS evil. God bless the little boy. He should have never been subjected to such horror.
@my_opinions Sickening isn't it? I managed to raise two kids without ever abusing them. Too many people just should not be parents.
Deport her. Â Allow the boy to stay here with a family that will raise him as a human being. Â
Â
Mexico is such a wonderful place and sends us such nice people, don't they?
@sentryone I'm sorry, what in the article would indicate she is here illegally or even from another country?Â
@sentryone Also, don't misconstrue this as me defending her. I'm just saying there's nothing to indicate that she isn't a citizen.
Â
My own parents cigarette burned me and beat my hands so hard that i had blisters so I don't think this woman should ever be able to see her children again, at least until they are adults and want to make the decision to confront their abusers.
Yeah I wouldn't have believed their stories either, Toasting marshmallows over the stove? Monkeybars? Not reporting because of fears of taking him away? Yeah, that says it all right there. But it's not hard for me to believe she beat them with a witches broom. Doesn't every witch have one? She sure does. And we didn't need the broom to prove that she is a witch. And I must say that's putting it very mildly!
There's always some wierdo who insists that a criminal is really a "really good person." What motivates them? Their own guilt about their own behavior?
This is not what being a mother is all about. This is not what children desperately need in a mother. Good lord, woman, what is going on in your addled brain?
Â
I knew a man whose mother purposely burned his hands when he was a little boy "to teach him a lesson" and I can tell you, 30 or more years later it still traumatized him.
Another one that needs sterilization. Â
lots of awful "mom" stories the last few days. lets see if she is actually convicted of any crimes...
I meant to say that the boys only speak Spanish they questioned the boys in English so of course they gonna say yes to everything but this whole story keeps getting twisted and then the news makes it sound all bad seriously get the facts unless you really know the story don't make it like she abused them she hasn't but in regards to the ipad the babysitter told him if he touched the ipad again she would burn his hands and then got mom into trouble? Come on something is wrong hee
@lovemyfamily7 If that is true, why didn't she seek medical care for her son's injuries and report the babysitter when the hospital started asking questions?  Why would she withhold medical care from a child who clearly needed it?
@Doxie @lovemyfamily7 - VERY good point Doxie, well-stated.
@mccwife  @Doxie  @lovemyfamily7 I mean, it only stands to reason, right?  I don't even have kids, but we run to the vet for DOGS faster than she got that poor child some care.
@lovemyfamily7 - you admit you know this lady, and you just signed up for this KOMO account today, so I think much of what you say is wholly biased. Experienced pediatric docs at Children's (who see abuse all the time) could clearly see multiple burn contacts, in addition to older scars. Kids rarely lie, and to infer that this little guy is lying does even more damage - shame on you!! Even if the kids only speak Spanish, between the hospital and the police department, there are plenty of professional interpreters to be found. Investigators know they can't make a case if they child is not questioned in their native language. Yeah, mom is so innocent she lawyered up pretty damn quick, now didn't she? Yes - something is wrong here, and I very much doubt it's those little boys in the wrong.
@lovemyfamily7  Nope... a doctor who examined the boys hands determined there were four separate burn patterns, "indicating multiple contacts, not one....
Â
The doctor also found a scar on the boy's head, neck shoulder and buttocks.
Â
Who are YOU? Â You say you know this mother and she didn't do these things to this child? Â Â
Â
How did they happen then? Â Were YOU involved?? Â Â
Â
How dare you come here and try to downplay all the marks on this child's body while you hide behind a screen name? Â
Â
Â
First off i know this lady and she didn't even do this. And before you start thinking she did now the lil boy just stated that now the babysitter is now burning him so what you think and plus they asked the boys I'm English of course they didn't have a onter
@lovemyfamily7 Are you that naive?? If a child is being abused at home then they are more than likely afraid of their parents. Most parents who abuse their kids tell them that if they ever get questioned about the marks to lie. You need to get yourself together!!!
@lovemyfamily7 What's an "onter", and why didn't they have one?
@lovemyfamily7 If you're English, (or KNOW it......your post was hard to decipher) you REALLY need to get a grip on the language, punctuation, sentence structure.....etc.
We can not deport her because there is no information if she is a citizen or not.
@@amber@ Not to mention it looks like she already has a couple anchors.
@@amber@ No evidence that she is either.... but at this sadly unfortunate juncture, it's merely a rhetorical statement anyway.
iPod......must be nice! These children should be placed in a loving, home where they can be noursished and have a real chance at life. Mom needs to go away!
@mustang sally Yes go away indefinatey. This behaviour is evil and unexcusable.
Normally, I would say deport her and her offspring WITH her. In this particular case however, those kids need to go to a home where they're NOT afraid of making "stressed out mommy" burn them for touching a highly overpriced toy. If this woman get's deported, deport her to the bottom of Puget Sound. Just sink her slow........she DESERVES it. C.P.S.? A LOT of people are WATCHING this one........DON'T drop the ball on THESE kids like you did the ones on Tulalip earlier this week.
@Wolfen All mothers get stressed, but we don't abuse our children. Throw her in jail and throw away the key!
didn't seek medical treatment because she was afraid the "state would take the boy away from her?"Â Â I was also thinking "... because she would be deported as illegal?"
well, I hope the state STILL takes him and the other siblings away for good! I'm tired of CPS always wanting "to keep the family together". ppffff. Mother had her chance, she screwed up royally. when will CPS realize that enough is enough?
My son is almost 9 and I have never laid a finger on him. This angers me to no end. What the hell is wrong with our world? I can't go an hour without hearing about another child abuse or murder or molestation case. Seriously maybe we should start some kind of license program to have a child, I mean we shouldn't have to go to such extreme measures but seriously this can't keep happening over and over and over again!
OMG....Whats wrong with people. That poor little boy. I hope she never see's those kids again. But knowing this state they will return the kids to her.
Burns are about the worst things that can happen. This "mother" (no mother in my book) should get the chair.
She poured salt on open burns that she inflicted? Oh, please don't let those boys be another casualty of CPS, please.
@Doxie First she should be fixed where she cannot have more children; then burn her hands and pour salt into the wounds and rub the salt in real good till it makes her scream!
@mustang sally  @Doxie Add a little rubbing alcohol in to increase the pain.
@Doxie I wish I could take them in :( Every time I see a story about an abused child my heart breaks and i wish I had the extra money to give them a loving home with us.Â
@MomOf2 These horribly sad stories make even ME want to take in the poor children - and I don't even like kids! Still, I would never EVER treat a child that way, no matter how stressed out I got.
@MomOf2 Me too, I wish I could take them in and give them a real family with real love and appreciation it rips my heart out.
@MomOf2  @Doxie They do need to be removed.  I know a girl who was raised like this and knew nothing but this sort of treatment, and even at 23, she doesn't consider it abuse because she wasn't killed.  It changes their little minds and hearts as it damages their bodies.
