EUGENE, Ore. -- A man who disappeared after leaving Portland for a two-day motorcycle trip to Medford was found dead on Sunday in Lane County, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said.

James Lutter, 60, was last seen leaving the Portland area on Tuesday. Police said Lutter was headed through Detroit to John Day before heading southwest to Medford.

A search across several counties was underway for Lutter, whose cell phone signal was detected in Lane County.

Someone saw Lutter's motorcycle on a remote Lane County road southeast of Cottage Grove and reported it to the sheriff's office. Deputies found Lutter's body under his motorcycle about 15 feet off the road down an embankment, according to Jackson County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jenny Hall.

Lutter was wearing a personal locator beacon but it was not activated, Hall said.
