Mount Vernon Lutheran church swept by 3-alarm fire
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - A Mount Vernon church was heavily damaged in a three-alarm fire early Sunday.

Crews responded to the scene, Trinity Lutheran Church on South 18th Street, just after midnight Sunday after receiving a 911 call from a passer-by who saw flames shooting from the structure, says Mount Vernon Fire Chief Ray Hari.

Firefighters responded from all around the region to battle the blaze. Ultimately, it took eight firefighting crews about three hours to bring the blaze under control.

Hari says about a quarter of the church was destroyed in the fire - but he believes the main structure is repairable.

No one was injured, and a cause has not yet been determined. The FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been notified, as is standard with any church fire, Hari said.

He said there is no indication of arson at this point.

The church is closed down completely in the wake of the fire, and church members held services on the lawn Sunday morning.
