Not guilty plea in bizarre Grays Harbor Co. courthouse attack

MONTESANO, Wash. - The man accused of wounding a deputy and a judge during a violent courthouse outburst in March has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges against him.

Steven Kravetz made the plea Friday before Judge Richard Brosey in Grays Harbor County Superior Court. Kravetz also waived his right to a speedy trial and asked for an independent opinion of his mental capacity at the time of the incident.

Kravetz is accused of attacking a sheriff's deputy and a judge inside the courthouse main floor on March 9. He was captured a day later when his own mother turned him in.

The injured judge, David Edwards, returned to work almost immediately while Grays Harbor County Deputy Polly Davin returned to her job about a month after the bizarre attack.

Davin was shot with her own gun after Kravetz allegedly grabbed it from her. He is also accused of stabbing her twice, in the cheek and in the throat.

A trial is currently scheduled for next spring in Grays Harbor County Superior Court, located in the same building where the attack took place. Because of that, Kravetz's attorneys are expected to ask for a change in venue in the trial.

New security measures have been put in place at the courthouse since the attack. Kravetz is being held in the Mason County Jail to avoid any conflict-of-interest issues with the injured deputy.
