Obama nets big bucks in Puget Sound fundraisers
SEATTLE -- President Barack Obama left Seattle Wednesday morning, a day after attending a pair of Eastside fundraisers that added millions to his re-election campaign.
Air Force One took off from Boeing Field at 9:39 a.m., bound for New Orleans.
The trip wasn't about courting voters as much as it is about raising money. Washington won't be ground zero in the race for the White House, but political analyst Ron Dotzauer said the state is turning into a cash register for politicians.
"Washington state, interestingly enough, has become a very fertile state for fundraising," he said.
Dotzauer said GOP candidate Mitt Romney has raised roughly $2 million in Washington. Impressive, but not when compared to the $6 million raised by Obama, and that's not counting what the president pulled in on Tuesday.
State GOP chair Kirby Wilbur doesn't want to get sidetracked by all the talk about money.
"I think people get really concerned about the role of money," Wilbur said. "I don't think it's as important as people think.
The president was in the Eastside Tuesday night for two sizable fundraisers, with both events held at the Hunt's Point home of former Costco CEO Jim Sinegal. In brief remarks Tuesday evening, the president praised Sinegal and Costco, which he called "the story of what America is all about."
The first event was roundtable with around 25 people, and the second was a dinner for nearly 200. The roundtable cost roughly $35,000 per attendee.
The money comes at a critical turning point for the re-election effort. The Associated Press reported that Romney actually outraised the Obama campaign over the last two months, but a recent count by ABC News shows Obama still has a nearly 10-1 advantage of cash on hand.
Despite his recent inroads, Wilbur admits Romney could use a financial boost out west.
"I'm sure he'd like to come back to Washington state and see if he can get into the treasure trove of money here in the state again," he said.

I recall a quote from a 90s' television show that fits any political situation: "If more of our so-called leaders would walk the same streets as the people who voted them in, live in the same buildings, eat the same food instead of hiding behind glass and steel and bodyguards maybe we would get better leadership and a little more concern for the future. "
Â
I fear that the lesser of two evils will be how people vote yet again. The current sitting President is that. Maybe in four years a better candidate will arrive to bring the people together that hasnt been in over 40 years now.
Thank you Mr. President for visiting us again!! And Mr. President , you are correct, Costco, Boeing, Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks, and many other GREAT companies here set GREAT examples for the rest of the world! Please return soon ! OBAMA 2012 !!
 @LoJack Thank you Mr. Obama for throwing minorities in prison and ruining their lives on drug offenses that you hypocritically brag about doing yourself! Thank you Mr. Obama for bombing all those brown people on the other side of planet! Thank you for assassinating American citizens, one of which aged 16, without due process! Thank you for giving thousands of guns to Mexican drug cartels! Thank you Mr. Obama for spying on the American people! Thank you for raising my health insurance premium by 30%! Thank you for making me liable for an additional $20000 of government debt! Thanks for raising all of those campaign funds from Wall St. banks! Thank you Mr. Obama!
@Adam Peart Ummmm...wasn't Bush also accused of spying on American people? And bombing those brown people on the other side of the planet? Are you referring to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that were started BEFORE he was in office? Just wondering...
@Adam Peart You're also making some huge assumptions about my feelings toward the war. I didn't believe in it then and I certainly don't now. Don't try to read so much between the lines. It makes you look like an uneducated fool who's trying to look smart.
@Adam Peart @Adam Your argument just makes you sound like a hypocrite: "what I say is truth. What you say is brainwashing.". Bottom line is they are allegations from both sides.
 @SW  @Adam Ah here we go again. Typical brainwashing. This whole 'if you aren't for one you must be for the other' b.s. drives me nuts. It really shows you, other Obama apologists like you, and many Neo-con 'conservatives' have the intellectual depth of a puddle. This may come as a shocker, but I couldn't stand Bush either! I was anti-war when Bush was in and vehemently apposed his warmongering. And now I oppose Obama's warmongering. It's called having PRINCIPLE. I know the concept is foreign to you and all of those who protested Bush's wars yet suddenly fell silent after Obama took office., After all, killing is good and A.O.K. when it's 'your guy' doing the killing, right? What you, and many like you exhibit is called spineless amoral HYPOCRISY. He's been commander in chief for FOUR YEARS and still no end in sight in Afghanistan. In fact, Mr. Obama's Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed an agreement with Afghanistan's 'president' Hamid Karzai that ensures U.S. troop presence there until at LEAST 2024! And how about that war Mr. Obama clandestinely STARTED in Libya? Or his escalation of drone attacks in Yemen and Pakistan? Stop acting like Obama is infallible, or that his crap doesn't stink too. Stop cheer-leading for a proven liar and murderer. Obama could have ended all wars and military occupations the minute he stepped into office. No congressional approval required. But he hasn;t. Why? Because like Bush, he agrees that making sure weapons manufacturers and private contractors making hundreds of billions of dollars is worth the MURDER of aforementioned innocent brown people half way around the world. To justify it only solidifies that you have no morals, character, or principle.
@LoJack I agree! I work for one of those companies and I for one am extremely grateful to my employer for going above and beyond to take care of us and set the example that it is possible to treat your employees well and succeed as a business.
Stop milking us.
@justinsane:Â If you are tired of him milking you just stop giving him money!
The money part isn't important? This guy is delusional. WHO doesn't mean anything to? Us or them? This "president" has been here four freakin' times. Not once has he actually met with the people or spoken in a public place to us common everyday tax paying people. That right there is VERY important and proves how VERY important the money is to BO. That right there is why I will NOT vote for this man. He doesn't give a rat's hind end about any of us.
 @Nanamamabjm Amen!
 I was watching the Boeing Field camera to make sure I would be able to step outside to see the magnificent Air Force One take off. I headed outside as soon as I saw the jet move on the camera. But when I got outside, it was already gone! Darn! Either that camera was delayed or that jet managed to taxi out and leave real fast!@
 @Ben Morgan Its funny you should mention that camera, I was trying to use that camera to see the traffic as he landed. That camera was delayed and I got a Norton alert for a file that loaded on to my computer. From that location, wonder if any one else had the same experience?
Imagine how happy I am to know the riches and most influencial people in the area are nincompoops and are willing throwing food money after bad. I love living in a place where the people don't matter and the powerful are stupid.
@Jinjerella Some of those "nincompoops" run some of the largest companies in our state and provide staple, well-paying jobs to thousands.
 @SW  @Jinjerella Yes, and that's why they're paying good money to buy influence with the president who can control policy that directly affects their companies or their competitors companies, either for their benefit or to the detriment of their competitors. Some call it 'contributions', I call it 'bribery.' New boss same as the old boss. Nothing to see here. Nincompoops? No. Sly crooks in fancy suits? Yes.
@Adam Peart I work for one of those companies and I certainly don't feel that way. Sounds like some is very bitter and has trouble finding joy in the world. It must suck to live life so cynical and unhappy.
Here is my complaint about any president visiting - They royally screw up the traffic. But as I don't live up north, nor do I have to drive it, I don't have to deal with it. Wonder if the government will wise up and compensate all those affected. I doubt that.
Here is my complaint about any president visiting any state for fundraising, they only tap the richie riches. Why not visit those whom you supposedly are for? They might not be able to give as much but it is something and actions speak way louder than words. Just saying
You should realize by now Terri, that the politicians in our country ARE for the rich, not the average American. Here's a thing to ponder......HOW does one (being the president of our country) JUSTIFY, spending MILLIONS of dollars to secure a job that only pays $450,000K a year, plus bennies? The *perks* MUST BE awesome, and the rich folks he's pandering to want things left JUST the way they are........while the REST of us slide further and further into debt.
 @LoudNoises Congress made an average 1800% return on their personal investments since 2008, while the average American lost 40% of their net worth during the same time period. And to think people trust this government so much that they want to give even MORE power, money, and control of the economy to these people. It truly does boggle the mind.
I wonder if most of the people complaining about taxes actually understand that the Bush Tax Cuts were temporary and are going to lapse. Obama is trying to make them only "lapse" for the top 1%. We're talking a 3% return to what it used to be not a tax increase. The GOP is fighting and holding all income earners hostage from any income level.
Do you mouth breathers understand any of this?
 @ducati Do you understand that even if you taxed the richest 1% in the country 100% of their income (i.e. make them slaves to the state) you'd only take in an extra $68 billion? Do you realize the private banking cartel known as The Federal Reserve creates money out of thin air then loans it to the government at interest? Did you know that ALL income tax revenue goes solely to pay the interest on the debt, or in other words, directly into the coffers of the PRIVATE bank known as The Federal Reserve? Are you aware that this private bank The Federal Reserve loaned out some $15TRILLION to foreign banks, governments, and institutions in the last 4 years? And did you know that our ENTIRE GDP is $15 trillion? Have you understood that huge injections of credit and money creates inflation which hugely benefits the rich who get money for virtually nothing, while the average American gets poorer, paying increased prices for less product/service? Have you understood that inflation is a TAX that everyone has to pay? Do you feel like a slave yet? Do you realize 'elections' are merely theatrics to give citizens the false sense that they have choice, and freedom? And that choice being Puppet #1 or Puppet #2? Has anyone ever told you that if you beg to be taxed more that you suffer from Stockholm Syndrome? Or have they told you that taxing your wealthier neighbor more is nothing short of justified theft through the force of government?
@ducati It's caused selective hearing.
He even messed up my commute this morning in Bellevue! Glad he is back in Air Force One and on the way back to DC. Good riddance!
 @lgconservative Of course, regardless of which party holds the presidency, we hear these familiar "he messed up my commute... goo riddance", posts (typically by those supporting the party currently not in the white house). To those of you who complain about the traffic caused by presidential visits for (a) both parties, or (b) neither party... Thanks... To the rest of you partisan poo's... Good riddance to you.Â
There's a quote right off Whitehouse.Gov

 @HonkeyCat Oh really? What a load that is. Bet all the business people are rolling on the floor.
Let's see...did he use his "Good to go" Pass.....Bye bye..not gonna miss ya!
He flies in on OUR dime, raises money for HIS pocket.......thinking he should reimburse the American public every time he uses the perks of his office for his personal campaign.
Just like George Bush did?????
 @Rentonmark Is that your response to everything?
@justinsane Just when it fits. Romney, Koch Brothers et.al.just hide their fund raising through the PAC's.
Only if you multiply by 15, Obama has had more fund raisers than anyone ever has. If he  had met with his Job Coucil in the last 10 months, maybe I wouldn't be so disgusted, but the only reason he says anything now is the campaign. Imelt outsources more jobs in a week than any one else in the country, and Obama attacks Mitt for it, when it really doesn't hold a candle to only what Imelt has done. This administration is a joke. @Rentonmark
 @Rentonmark So he's no better than GB. What happened to Hope and "Change"? I guess that was a lie.Â
 @Terri Turner I still can't wait to make history by voting in the first ever midget-dwarf president. Just imagine how wet that would make Chris Matthews!
 @GeorgeG. He only got elected due to his skin color not based on experience. I am all for having a president who is black, white, orange, purple, etc as long as he/she has experience. Did I like who was running against him the first time...oh heck no!!
 @Rentonmark Yup, like all presidents of late and many other politicians.It should be uniformly stopped.
 @SeattleJoe Wow, it's refreshing to see someone has principle and cuts though the bull crap of partisan politics. I'm so tired of Obama apologists using that ol' "well Bush did it too" response to EVERYTHING, like it somehow justifies Obama's actions. It's like saying "sure I raped that woman, but that dude over there killed a woman...so I'm actually a very good person in comparison." The hoops a 'liberal's' mind must have to jump through to reconcile their support for Obama is astounding. The contrast between Bush and Obama is like that of eggshell white and light beige.
Yep! He came to meet with the 99%.....
...
How Ironic. Attacking the so called 1% but then asking them for money in the next breath.Â
Â
Hey, you guys suck. Now give me some cash. (No please, no thank yous, just gimme gimme gimme)
Â
Â
 @HonkeyCat  It's not a hypocrisy because obama believes all money and wealth belongs to him, so he's just coming to town pick up his cash.Â
@HonkeyCat He better ask fast, if Obama gets his way, the wealthy won't have a pot to pi$$ in let alone give it to him! WHAT A HYPOCRIT OBAMA IS.
This comment has been deleted
 @Dannyboy The end of an error is a good thing. Count me in.
Wow, what a bunch of hypocrites. A lot of these posts act like the Republicans never hold expensive fundraisers like this. After all, the reason why a lot of people can afford them is because the Republicans don't feel the wealthy should pay their share of the taxes. Why shouldn't Obama take advantage of that? Plus, let's not forget it was a Republican who got us in this economic mess in the first place. Now he's sitting in his posh ranch without a care in the world while the rest of us suffer as a result of his poor decision making. You want to blame someone? Blame the guy you elected into office for two terms.
 @SW What a stupid argument. And incredibly ignorant insight. I hope you're just a middle school student. Honestly, your argument is 'if a white man robs a bank, then why should a black man who robs a bank too be held accountable?' And please, I beg you, educate yourself. Please! Our 'economic mess' has been the culmination of government policy involving BOTH Democrats and Republicans spanning the last hundred years since the Woodrow Wilson presidency and the creation of the Federal Reserve. The road of economic ruin has been paved for quite some time now. It's only now that we see that road leads to a cliff, one we're about to go off of. Your head has been filled with rhetoric, false information, and indoctrination. Please, I beg you! Turn off the TV and read a book. Stop parroting what you hear others tell you and actually get an opinion of your own.
@Adam Peart How ironic that you say that since here you are reading the same news website as everyone else. You're an idiot.
 @SW You'll still be blaming Bush in 40 years from now.
@justinsane And you'll still be blaming Obama.
No, it was Bush calling 8 times for reforms and Waters, Frank and the other dems said "there is no problem", I watched all of the hearings. It was Clinton that forced the bad loans and Obama and ACORN suing the banks that pushed Clinton to do it. Find out some history, outside the MSMbs machine before you claim to know what caused it. Carter started Neighborhood Reinvestment, Obama/ACORN sued banks, Clinton expanded Neighborhood Reinvestment and forced banks to comply or close, years later the market implodes from the weight of those forced bad loans.Those years inbetween Frank and his committee ignored every indication of failing policy and need for oversite, they ignored and Dodd got sweetheart loans, it was even after the scandal of cooked books at Freddie nd Fanny that they still would do nothing. Dems had the entire Congress for 4 years and they did nothing.  @SW
 @SW while a republican did get us in this mess, as bush DID put us in debt, however obama has put us further into debt raising our debt 6 trillion dollars in just 3 3/4 years! so really democrates dont have any room to talk as well. You make no sense about people being hypocrites, obama hates rich people hates capitalism, but yet he goes to ask for money from the rich people that succeeded becuase of capitalism.
@takingamericaback My comment about hypocrites was everyone complaining about Obama holding fundraisers with the rich and using tax dollars to use Air Force One. A lot of former presidents have done that for re-election purposes. That's fine if you don't agree with Obama's policies, you're entitled to your opinion. I just don't like it when people use petty arguments like that. Regardless of which side you're on, educate yourself and actually get out there and vote.
 @takingamericaback Actually If you really look close, it was Barney Frank who got us into this mess........
@SW
@SW You really need to get your facts straight. The top 10% wage earners in America pay 75% of the Federal Taxes. If you took the TOTAL WAGES of those top 10% wage earners, you could fund the Federal Gov. (under Obama's current spending rate) for 14 DAYS so how is increasing those taxes going to help anyone? For his first TWO FULL YEARS in office, Obama had a Democratic controlled Congress, HE FAILED TO PASS A FEDERAL BUDGET, AND FAILED TO TURN OUR ECONOMY AROUND. And like you, he continues to blame Bush. Obama claims he bailed out the auto industry, WRONG! Every auto maker that received federal stimulus money filed federal bankruptcy to stay in business. Ford Motor Co. didn't take ANY federal stimulus money and was the only American car manufacture to turn a profit in 2010 and 2011. So it is time that both you and Barack stop blaming Bush for something Obama is incapable (and incompetent) of fixing. His policies have failed America, he has taken billions of our dollars and given them to his campaign supporting "green energy buddies" only to have them go bankrupt. He travels around our country trying to brainwash people with the crap about everyone paying their "fare share" because he knows talking like that will get the middle class fired up and on his side. HOW NAIVE are you, do you honestly think that wealthy people pay more in taxes, you will allow you to pay less?...WAKE UP! The top wage earners in this country are what drive the middle class, who do you think drives the Seattle Economy? How about Microsoft, Boeing, Weyerhaeuser, YAH, tax the hell out of them so they can cut jobs to pay those higher taxes. YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG, JUST LIKE OBAMA.
@AnAmerican Citizen You're certainly entitled to your opinion because that's the right in our country but if you've ever been in debt before, it's a heck of a lot easier to get into it than out of it. Especially when you have to get the approval of a group of people who hate you. Remember we live in a democracy so expecting Obama to fix everything is completely unrealistic. And if you want to talk about bail outs, how did all those bank bail outs work out under the Bush administration?
@Adam Peart Then move to a country where there's no government. That would certainly solve one of your problems.
 @SW  @AnAmerican Remember we live in a Republic, not a Democracy. A democracy is MOB rule. A democracy is a majority trampling the rights of the minority. A democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. This is a perfect example of mass indoctrination in public schools for the last hundred years. Now, here's an idea- Why don't Obama and all of the other politicians (both Democrat and Republican) just get out of the way and stop burdening and infringing upon the citizenry and let us fix our own problems!? They are not gods! They are not geniuses! They don't create jobs, or invent things that improve the quality of life of people. They proffer themselves by redistributing wealth, creating class warfare, inflaming racial divides, restricting individual's rights, and all-out looting. They work for banking cartels that get money free of interest then lend it to you at artificially high interest. They manufacture wars to give money to the military industrial complex that make profits off of the blood of innocents. They lust for power and control over the populous. The pharmaceutical industry doesn't make money off of curing cancer, they make money off of treating it. Politicians don't increase in wealth and power by solving problems, but by creating more problems. And if racism ceased to exist, what on Earth would the likes of Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or Louis Farrakhan do for a living? We the people can solve our OWN problems. The government just needs to get the hell out of our way and off our backs!
 @AnAmerican Citizen  @SW  @SWÂ
Funny thing about "facts", is that these days, we can all look up the real facts independent of propaganda from either, and in most cases, the conservative are showing a real propensity for altering reality.
Â
All one need do is to examine the standard tax returns from "wage earners" to those of the top 10%. There's your real fact. Naturally, if you ignore all the itemized deductions, etc., from those in the top 10%, and more from the top 1%, their taxes show a real drop to near zero.
 @WSims007 Fact: ALL income tax is theft.
 @WSims007 Yep, I'm in that camp. The name of that camp is Logic and Reason. Free cell phones for the 'poor' is not a safety net. Talk to Greece about funding safety nets. Oh wait! They're bankrupt and can't fund squat! Better to start decoupling the Feds from 'safety nets' now instead of waiting until there are no safety nets at any level of government. (p.s. that would be ok by me too.)
 @SW  @SeattleJoe Ah, the fact that you think there's any semblance of difference between Democrats and Republicans exhibits a genuine ignorance on your part. It's ok, most of the country is suckered into this 'my party can do no wrong' or 'good cop/bad cop' or 'home team vs. away team' mentality. True, RHETORIC is different, but when you follow the money BOTH parties end up working for the benefit of one special interest or the other, but NOT their constituency. For example, the GOP's 2013 budget wants to spend $634 billion on defense(which goes directly in the pocket of the military industrial complex) while those peace-loving Democrats(ha!) want to spend only $620 billion on militarism. These budget 'debates' between the 2 parties(in reality the 1 party) are dog and pony shows for you, gullible John Q. Public. In REALITY these budget squabbles amount to a mere 4% difference in spending and allocation. Wake up please! A political party is NOT a philosophy! Unless we have philosophic discourse on the rule of law, role of government, and the precepts of liberty in this country we are destined to fail. Arguing about whether your slave master's favorite color is red or blue is the mindless nonsense your masters want you to be focused on, not on the back room deals they make with each other and their lobbyist buddies to rob you of your Earthly possessions, freedom of choice, and individual liberty. All countries are nothing more than tax farms run by oligarchs that swindle you from the fruits of your labor through the FORCE of government. It's been going on for a few millennium. Only now the slave masters have learned that the most productive slaves are the ones that believe they are free. If you don't vote on principle, you end up with a government that has no principle.
@SeattleJoe I think we need to start vaccinating people who are destined to vote Republican.
@AnAmerican Citizen I agree, we do need to spend less but let's be realistic, both parties have problems doing that. No matter what the money is being spent on, the other side is going to disagree.
@SeattleJoe @AnAmerican Citizen @WSims007 And I'm sure you'll stop blaming Obama some day. Doubtful. It works both ways.
 @AnAmerican Citizen  @WSims007  @SW I'd like to give you a trophy. You summed it up nicely. We don't have a problem with the amount of money we are taking in with taxes, we have a problem with the amount of money being spent. Whats funny is when you bring this up, the left is happy to point out where Bush overspent and completely unwilling to talk about where Obama has spent gazillions more than Bush. I'm beginning to think we need to start vaccinating our kids for "Bush Derangement Syndrome" asap since it will be 2096 and the liberals will still be blaming Bush for the common cold and everything else that ever happens.Â
@WSims007 @SW Govt. Programs like giving billions to failed "green energy projects" Govt. Programs like "Fast & Furious". The problem is NOT tax more, the problem is spend less. Obama refuses to do just that!Â
 @AnAmerican Citizen  @WSims007  @SWÂ
Every time we break down taxes, who pays, what levels, deductions, other special considerations, and the multitude of other itemization's, we can fudge up numerous categories. As with businesses, you cannot simply put up "businesses" as all equal. There are3 numerous categories. But for the matter here, we can divide them into top 1%, major multinational corporations, top 30% or so, being those with 1 million or slightly less, and then the bulk being small businesses with $300,000.00 or less incomes.
Â
So however, if we look at what you want to claim, if we accept that the top top 10% are paying about 34% before deductions, and that the republicans want to reduce that far more, then that means our government will have even less for the various programs than they do now. And if we also accept that us common folk are skimping out on paying federal taxes, that perhaps we should then be paying more to make it up? Or perhaps you are in the camp that national government needs to simply cease funding all safety net programs, and leave it either to the states to do, or simply end them?
@WSims007 @SW
OK, a few more facts....98% of the top wage earners in America are business owners. As ANY business owner (not just those owned by the top 10%) taxes are not just attached to income. They pay Property tax when they buy and maintain a business property, they pay employment taxes when they employ people. They pay inventory tax on stock and merchandise. So when I refer to taxes, I am not just speaking of their income tax. You see, that is what Obama does, he specifically equates their taxes to income because he knows full well that is what middle class American relates to, he fails to recognize these people for their true contributions to our economy. Instead he runs around the country telling theses people "You didn't build that". He is doing nothing more than trying to bribe the middle class with BS!
This comment has been deleted
@Dannyboy How is holding onto the "Bush did it" any different than you blaming Obama for everything now?
 @SW The hypocrite is the one who slaps the 1% with one hand while taking their $$ in fund raising with the other...And while holding the 99% down with their foot... Its the Republicans who want to lift the 99% not tear down the 1% so there will be nobody at the top (except socialist politicians-they will never give up theirs to help anybody).
Â
So who's been in charge for the last 3+ years??? Are you better off than you were in 2008? The guy who got elected for the last term is the one you need to worry about now. Time to quit living in the past.
@boeman As a matter of fact, I am better off than I was in 2008 because I was able to refinance my house at a lower rate under the HARP program enacted by Obama. Without it, I'd be paying the outragous interest rate that was in effect during the Bush administration and not able to refinance because my house was worth less than I paid for it and I make my payments on time every month.
Only difference is, these 1% who are willing to give money to Obama campaign, are also willing to pay their fair share in taxes. Not like Romney who wants to use all tricks in the book to avoid taxes and pay less than 15% in taxes While I paid 29% last year. NOBODY is hating the 1% for their money. Only when there money is made on the backs of 99% and who are not willing to pay their fair share.
 @Iamin99 Bull. People are hating the so called 1% because they have been trained to by the liberals. Its class warfare plain and simple. Remember that "1%" is paying a large amount of the tax burden already and to ask them to pay even more isn't right either. Liberals think all the 1% are getting away with something but they still pay a huge chunk of the taxes which means that claim is false.Â
