Off-duty Ore. officer accused of attempted murder
FOREST GROVE, Ore. - An off-duty Hillsboro police office was arrested on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder after a standoff at his home on Sunday night that injured a sheriff's deputy.
Timothy Cannon, 46, has been booked in the Washington County Jail. He will face a judge in Washington County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
The case began when sheriff's deputies and Forest Grove police officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving Cannon and wife at about 8:30 p.m. on 37th Avenue in Forest Grove.
Officers on the scene attempted to talk with Cannon, who had allegedly barricade himself inside the. Officers entered the home and fired shots. One of the sheriff's deputies sustained non-life threatening injuries, the Washington Country Sheriff's Office said in a press release.
Cannon was taken into custody and deputies said he sustained cuts on his face while resisting arrest.
Investigators won't say whether Cannon fired his gun or elaborate further on why the office is accused of attempted aggravated murder.
A Forest Grove Police captain told KATU News Sunday night the deputy had a gunshot wound. He was treated and released, according to the Forest Grove Police Department.
Neighbors around Cannon's home were evacuated during the incident. Cannon's wife and daughter, age 6, were not hurt, deputies said. Forest Grove Police said Cannon's wife works for the department but is not an officer.
Five Forest Grove police officers who fired their guns were placed on administrative leave following the incident. Four Washington County deputies, including the one who sustained a minor hand injury, also were placed on leave for discharging their weapons. Placing officers who have fire weapons on leave is standard procedure.
Cannon was taken to the Washington County Jail and faces "multiple charges" but the charges have not yet been detailed by the sheriff's office.
The conditions of Cannon and the injured deputy have not been released. Cannon has been a Hillsboro police officer assigned to the patrol division for the past 13 years, Hillsboro police said.
Neighbors were eventually allowed to return to their homes.
A police spokesman said Forest Grove police have never been called to Cannon's home and they have no idea what triggered his outburst.
Even Removing this Crook Cop from Police. It's Not going to change this Criminal Behavior.
His wife, Lisa Cannon is a higher ranking employee of the same Hillsboro PD.  Often, this is the kind of reaction to a discovered affair. Maybe.

This guy was a Cop???? Sounds like they should send him to the Bellevue PD. He would fit right it.
Lower your expectations of KOMO dramatically and they will not disappoint you.
Spell checkers can not fix stupid.
Dear KOMO-
Â
Are you professionals? Â
Â
Sincerely -Â
Â
A person who has more than a 3rd grade education and can point out all your errors.
Â
PS - You should be ashamed to call yourselves journalists. Â
KOMO: could you proofread your story and re-write it so that we can make some sense of it?
That poor little girl. I knew this would be a domestic assault case. Â
No sympathy for the wife? The wife was also there with her little girl you know. I'm so tired of people dismissing adult women in domestic violence crimes like this and only thinking of the children. Adult women feel fear too and I'll bet the wife didn't want to experience this either.Â
@domino Adult women can defend themselves.  A scared child that is in danger is a greater cause of concern.
Â
Grow up.
@domino Way to feed into a stereotype kiddo.
@TJM Adult women aren't as strong as most men and are frequently badly beaten and or murdered with more frequency than the children. No matter what you say, it is still not OK to dismiss the danger or harm that women face or make it lesser than that of children. They are both equal. Women are not worth less than children.
I dont know whose journalism integrity is worse; the writer or the editor. There is virtually no information in the article to substantiate writing it. No information has been released by the authorities, so why even bother writing this?
@northwestsurfer Do KOMO employees have any pride at all in their work? This error-filled slop is so messy, so carelessly copy-pasted it's even bad for KOMO's ever-decreasing standards.
Â
Come on, if anyone there has even a shred of pride in their work, can we please at least auto-corrrect all of the copy-pasted "office" references that should read officer? Maybe complete a few sentences?
Â
No wonder you're all too ashamed to put your bylines on it, but that doesn't excuse cranking out such careless slop!Â
@MargeGunderson Calm down Margaret. KOMO didnt write the article, KATU did. KOMO just republished it, but they are not allowed to correct the spelling and grammar since they did not write it.
Spell check your article.
This guy should be hired by s.p.d
@Seattle Yep, he'd make a perfect police chief.
LOL looks like they did a rodney king on that boy
What I don't get is that there are nine officers on admin. leave for firing their weapons, and he was only wounded? That sounds like pretty bad shooting to me. Â There must be a lot of holes in that families home. Just a thought.
@Glen From the wording it sounds like one of the deputies who arrived was injured.
ah, i'm sure his union will smooth everything out or him ans assure he keeps getting paychecks in the meantime..
This article is so poorly written that I can't even follow the story. Please use Microsoft Word or go repeat 3rd grade.
Honestly, did a 2 year old write this?Â
"An off-duty Hillsboro police office was arrested"Â
"Washington Country Sheriff's Deputy was wounded " Can I have an 'A'? You can have the 'r' back.
"responded to a domestic disturbance involving Cannon and wife at about 8:30" Me husband, she wife.
"who had allegedly barricade himself inside the. Officers entered the home..." Clearly a product of Four Loko.
"or elaborate further on why the office is accused of attempted aggravated murder." No elaboration needed. They shouldn't have used an Ouija board in the office.Â
@windtreeman Don't forget his wife and daughter who apparently are both six years old, and the fact the "offices" were placed on administrative leave FOR discharging their weapons as if they're being punished for ending a volatile situation with no serious injuries.Â
@MargeGunderson  @windtreeman "offices" were placed on administrative leave - Micheal Scott finally went too far........
@windtreeman Sorry, Komo is trying to cut their budget. The first thing to go are the the letters, next they'll be using first names only in news stories, then it will be reduced to initials.Â
@DT Haha! They're not very good at Jeopardy.
Its not even formatted like a  typical story....its like they took a different piece of material and copied some sentences from it. Of course--being a "sister" station of KATU Portland....they both have the same article.
@windtreeman don't go there, people will call you a grammar and spelling Nazi ;-)
@Komo Dragon  @windtreeman I call Godwin's law. This tread is dead.
 @Komo Dragon Congratulations.
@Howard Beale  @windtreeman learn something new every day
Does not look good for the arrested, but I would still like to hear the full story.
@Komo Dragon ?????? Above The Law??? Maybe there should be a movie.....
See? we don't need guns, we can rely on perfect police officers who NEVER make any mistakes and will never do anything wrong! Let them have all the guns and they will protect us PERFECTLY ALL THE TIME!....

I think this guy was a couple years ahead of me in High School in Missoula. Blows my mind if it's the same guy. He was always very level-headed and stood up for others who got picked on.
@Kevin Hammond Even normally level-headed and non-violent people can be pushed to the brink when the conflict involves family members.  Who knows what happened here, if there were substances involved or mental illness. Â
Â
Also, women can be every bit as abusive as men in relationships - the abuse just tends to manifest itself in different ways.
@UtterReality  There is always one commenter, when it comes to domestic abuse cases, who posts this stuff.  No one can be pushed to abuse a spouse and child. No one.  It's been proven over and over again that people who abuse their spouse or loved one, do it because they WANT to.  It's all about control, and lack of respect for the other person.  You really should read up on it.  The reality is that someone who abuses his wife does not beat up his boss, or the mailman, or best friend. They CAN control themselves, but they don't feel that their spouse/SO is worthy enough to make their own decisions.  Read "Why Does He Do That?"  written by a doctor who has worked with domestic abusers as they've been assigned to him in court.  It's eye-opening. And pretty much blows away the theory that someone can push a guy into abusing.  Oh, and the author himself, an expert on domestic abuse, states in the forward that the book is about male abusers, because in his professional experience, the vast majority are males (because it has to do with power and control over someone else.) He acknowledges that there are women abusers, but it's a tiny minority.  Really, read up on it.Â
@DT @UtterReality ok, i will bite. the reason why men are a minorty is because they think of themselves less "manly" if they report their wife, gf beats them up. It is also why men are less likely to report a sexual assault. and the power and control goes both ways you know. some say that 40% of abuse are male, but they say it is more likely higher due to the stigma of men reporting. i really wouldn't say that women are "a tiny minorty".
@UtterReality It's true that women can be just as abusive but in this case since he was the one barricading himself and resisting arrest and shooting at fellow officers I doubt that was the case. They may have been abusive to each other but his actions are not that of an abused man. People are not "pushed to be abusive" - that is an excuse that abusers use (both men and women). They may try to protect themselves to escape or save themselves or their children but they don't stay in abusive relationships and become abusive themselves - that's what people already prone to being abusers do.
 @Kevin Hammond sad if true.
Stress maybe but mental health issues comes to mind, but at least he won't be a peace officer ever again. Should have known better than to give a criminal a badge and a gun. SPD candidate when he gets done doing his time. Hope the Oregon governor doesn't pardon this one.
Very happy the wife and daughter are ok. On another note, did no one bother to proofread this article before it was posted?
Hope he is no longer a police officer after this incident. Certainly wouldn't think so.
Guns. So awesome.....
@below-this-you-beach! It is amazing isn't it - how everyone who owns a gun or gets their hands on one because crazy and violent like this guy. Darn guns. Making people violent.
@Julia No, it's because it seems that most people who are attracted to guns have that mentality already. think about it.Â
 @below-this-you-beach! been getting high again?
@below-this-you-beach! Ok I'll bite. Yeah they should ban cops from having guns.
@Alert Eagle NY's state ban just restricted cops to 7 rounds and no "assault-style" rifles. Â
They didn't intend to do that, but they passed the law quickly and only afterwards did they read that it didn't exclude law enforcement.
@NWFreeman @Alert Eagle I just read the law on wikipedia, as well as the state and city laws that already existed. Man, I am a liberal who owns two guns, but this is just infringement on civil liberties.
@below-this-you-beach! I know right! Darn guns running around on their own two legs influencing off-duty officers to get into domestic incidents with family members and to fight with other Law Enforcement officers. When are we going to start doing background and psychological checks on guns?! **sarcasm on**
