Police: Woman made up carjacking story to hide gambling

BEAVERTON, Ore. – Police arrested a Beaverton woman who they said made up a story about a carjacking, assault and attempted rape so her boyfriend wouldn’t know she was playing video poker.
On Sept. 7 just before 3 a.m., police said Dora Lina Tovar, 32, called 911 and told police that a man with a mustache and strong body odor got into her car, showed her a knife and told her he was going to rape her. She then said the man told her to drive her car, but she managed to escape with her keys and run toward her nearby home, near the intersection of NW Cornell Road and 113th Avenue.
The story made headlines on Friday, then on Monday, Beaverton Police officers said Tovar made the story up. Officers arrested her for giving a false report to police.
Detectives found surveillance video that showed Tovar was playing video poker at the time she told police she was being held against her will. Tovar admitted to police that she made the story up because she didn’t want her boyfriend to know she was gambling, according to police spokesman Mike Rowe.
"The Beaverton Police Department feels that false reports do such a disservice to our community, especially false reports involving reported violence," Rowe said in a news release. "The Beaverton Police Department investigates every report to the fullest or resources will allow. In doing this, a report of a kidnapping, assault and attempted sexual assault require a large number of resources."
Tovar was taken to the Washington County Jail where she faces one charge of initiating a false report.
What a lucky guy.
A beating is in order. "sarcasim"
That a really hard 32 years
Idiot! OBVIOUSLY you have a gambling problem if you are trying to hide it from your boyfriend by making up such an elaborate story. Ever heard of the boy that cried wolf? I hope you never truly have to go through an incident like that because its no joke, you stupid b-word!
Why are we blaming the victim here? Oh... wait... she wasn't a victim. Â Â

Ladies or "s****" as that other story in KOMO so proudly proclaims, there is no such thing as "rape culture." Everybody opposes rape. Even murderers on Death Row. So when we hear of stories  like this, we know it a rarity but next to murder, rape is the most heinous charge society can make so we better be dang sure before we go throwing folks in prison because someone wanted to hide the fact they had a gambling problem from their boyfriend.

Any questions?

@Sid Vishess Rapists don't oppose rape and actual victims of rape don't ask for it. You are correct that everyone is entitled to due process and false accusations are a crime. You are wrong about there being no rape culture. But I've seen a lot of your posts and know that you won't believe that.
@two loons You and I have a far, FAR different interpretation of the word "culture."
Although  I will hand it to her for playing video poker at the casino. VP has the highest payback of any electronic gambling (as opposed to the slots). About 99% payback in most Tribal Casinos. You can get slightly better if you shop around in Nevada casinos, sometimes exceeding 100% payback for a skilled player.
Nice of KOMO to omit the false rape charge in the headline. Wonder why they did that?
Change to "attempted rape."
