Deputies: Oregon man used axe to kill his dogs

EAGLE CREEK, Ore. – A man who said he couldn’t afford to take care of his dogs was arrested for killing the animals, according a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
Lt. James Rhodes said the investigation started in November when Japheth Daniel Stalcup, 25, reported that his two family dogs had gone missing.
Stalcup told deputies that he found Buddy and Duke dead about 100 yards from his house, Rhodes said. Both dogs had been killed with an axe.
At first Stalcup said he didn’t know who killed the dogs, but as the investigation progressed Stalcup eventually admitted to killing both of the dogs, according to Rhodes.
Investigators said Stalcup admitted that he couldn’t afford to care for the dogs and killed them with an axe when he couldn’t think of an alternative.
Stalcup was arrested on Wednesday. He faces two counts of aggravated animal abuse and one charge of initiating a false police report.
In November, the Stalcup family did a story with KATU about their slain dogs.
"We are taking this very seriously and I pray that whoever did this has the nerve to come forth and maybe confess," Rose Stalcup said at the time. "Or hopefully someone who does know any information about it will come forward."
Rhodes said if you are a pet owner and feel like you can’t care for your animal, contact your local animal shelter or the Oregon Humane Society at (503) 285-7722.
Until they start imposing harsher penalties for this type of behavior there's always going to be someone who thinks that it is justified. In this particular case I think a mental evaluation would be in order. Who knows what else he's capable of.
 @Jatok Until we apply those "harsher penalties" to the Des Moines cops who so inhumanely shot and killed Rosie the Newfie after luring and torturing (Tasering) her into leaving her own yard, all such effort will me quite meaningless.
@JLS1950 It's only meaningless if we continue to give these people a slap on the wrist and a small fine.
 @Jatok  @JLS1950 ...or let a shooting review board call the act "justified" as in the Des Moines case.
Poor dogs... I vote we either give him the same punishment or better yet, we tie him up, slobber him in T-Bones and let an angry pack of dogs have their way.Â
 @BravesPackersCougzSounders Is this the answer to all offenses? To kill the "perpetrator" by the most gruesome and painful means we can imagine?
Has it yet occurred to you that your thinking and proposed behavior is much WORSE even than that of Stalcup???
Sick in the head. I need to hug my black lab now.
You F'ing IDIOT, what the hell is wrong with you! This act of violence you committed against two innocent dogs is going to haunt you for the rest of your life.
sick sob
 @TruthinAdverts I'm not sure what you're saying, but there is no truth in adverts.
Again.. the Pacific Northwest, animal cruelty capital of the Country. Â Or maybe tied with other backwoods places like this. Â
 @DT it could be you're just reading the news from here... and not elsewhere? humans are humans
And how many women kill their unborn baby because it's inconvenient, yet nobody's crying about that. Dogs seem to be more valued than babies now days.
 @Magic 8 Ball way to go totally off-topic
@Smartypants Thank you.
 @Magic 8 Ball a fetus is not a baby... nice try. Typical man. Until you can get pregnant, stick with the story at hand.  That's like claiming a seed is a tree.Â
@DT A seed is a tree when it starts to grow. Just like semen and an egg become a living human being when he/she starts to grow. Haven't you ever taken a biology class before?
@DT
I think you're a little off there. The word fetus is described in the dictionary as this: "the young of an animal in the womb or egg, especially in the later stages of development when the body structures are in the recognizable form of its kind, in humans after the end of the second month of gestation."
A baby is defined in the dictionary as this: "a human fetus."
Perhaps you should stick with the story at hand.
There is NO WAY I could take an AXE to any of my dogs!! What a freaking LOSER with a capital L!  They didn't die easily I'm sure unless he hit them just right and I seriously doubt it. This guy and his loser wife should be banned from having any kind of pet ever. You have money problems, send the dogs to someone else who can take care of the dogs or if they are really old and or sick, which these were not, then kindly euthanize them.  Ack - this is creepy.
I was to a point a couple of years ago where my budget was so tight that I just couldn't afford to properly take care of my dog.
Â
I found a no-kill sanctuary/rescue that was able to find her an amazing home instead of killing my baby...I can't even imagine those poor dog's last moments and thoughts.
May the same happen to him!
"He couldnât afford to take care of his dogs" my ass! Pathetic excuse! This is one time I hae no problem with an eye for an eye!
Look at his eyes. There is something very wrong with him. It is clear to me that his motivation for this brutality was absolutely not because he couldn't take care of them. And I'm guessing if we could know more of his secrets, this is not the first cruel act, nor will it be the last.
Â
Such beautiful dogs. I would have taken them. Breaks my heart. Dogs love unconditionally; they probably loved this monster too & look what he did to them. I'm sick.
 @Thunder "Look at his eyes"  yes, he looks baked.
 @nokoolaid4me He could be stoned on any number of drugs, including psychotropic drugs. My point was that his eyes show an empty soul.
Hey Daniel? I'd LOVE five minutes alone with you. I'll bring my axe.......and a muzzle to quiet your screams.
Crimes against animals are so sick but the frustrating part is the punishment. We need to take this stuff more seriously. Many serial killers start on animals. This is very serious.
He is a waste of space. Â Those two dear dogs would make more positive contributions to the world than this disgusting, cruel, moronic piece of excrement. Â Poor, poor creatures.
Yet another sicko. Oregon seems to have too many lately. Run free kids. You deserved better than this during your time on earth.
How horrible. I can't believe he could think of no other alternative. Something is really wrong to ax dogs to death. I mean the energy it would take. Sounds like serious anger issues.
better ban axes....
 @NW-Economist You need to propose this legislation correctly. It wouldn't be a complete ban on axes. Only assault style axes. No one is completely taking away your axes.
 @DevilsAdvocate  @NW-Economist take your gun c**p somewhere else
 @tufa23  @DevilsAdvocate  @NW-Economist Take your ANTI gun c**p somewhere else. (see how this works?)
 @tufa23  @DevilsAdvocate  @NW-Economist You are insulting c**p...
I had a brother who killed his dog with an ax in a fit of rage in front of the school bus when he was still in school back in the 60's. He quit school shortly thereafter. He committed suicide five years ago. Connection?
 @Hagar I'm sorry you had to deal with all of  this, Hagar.  I think that unfortunately, there are some people who are just chemically wired to be life-destructive.  So sad - it just devastates those around them.
@Hagar - eeeek! I am sorry for you loss! We as humans sometimes do not realize how really connected to animals that we are and I'm not sure, but probably a connection to that act and his suicide. Awful all the way around. :(
 @Hagar Holy cow. I can not imagine the devastation that caused all around. And yes definitely a connection. Certain humans are wired wrong and there is no changing it.
Hell is just going to be overflowing with scum like this......
The poster-child for retroactive abortion.
I hope someone gives him the axe! What a pud.
It's just two Dog's. Chill folks!
 @Grumpa I'm sorry no one loves you. :(  Only someone filled with anger, and rage, and lacking any true love in their lives, would write something like that.  Sadly, you have never experienced the joy of having a dog in your life.  You could probably use one, they DO love unconditionally, and it sounds like you have conditions.Â
@Grumpa - it's not exactly 'just two dogs' - they are living creatures who deserved better. I think the real horror is someone like this is out among the rest of us. So when he axes two people to death, what is going to be your comment then?
 @Grumpa People who do not see the beauty in dogs are missing out.
@Grump I think you forgot to take you're chill pill today
 @Grumpa You are an idiot.  Period.
 @Grumpa Chill? I happen to like dogs a hell of a lot better than people!
@Chico What an idiotic statement.
 @Grumpa It might be just two dogs but there are plenty of shelters that would have been willing to take those dogs. They didn't have to die.Â
 @PrairieDawn Unfortunately dogs die in shelters every single day. But I will agree that they didn't have to die in such a horrible fashion.
 @Grumpa They may have been "just two dogs" but they were living creatures & did not deserve to be killed in this cruel manner. If they had to die, at least it should have been humanely done!
 @Grumpa Wow...
