PORTLAND, Ore. – An Army veteran from Oregon died on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on Friday.
Gayle Yakopatz, president of Honor Flight of Oregon, told KATU the man had family members with him.
“Unfortunately we did lose a veteran on the plane as we were approaching Chicago,” Yakopatz said. “This is a tragic loss, but we are losing them all fast now. Our average age is 90.”
The man’s name has not been released. Yakopatz said he was born in 1925.
The man’s family was able to make proper funeral arrangements. The family members wanted the group to continue on so the rest of the veterans could experience the Honor Flight.
“There were moments of sadness of course,” said Yakopatz. “Everything was open and the weather cooperated though, so that was positive.”
