Orting murder victim's family makes plea for justice

ORTING, Wash. -- A heartbroken family made an emotional plea on Friday to the community and to the killer of Mike Compton, who was gunned down Wednesday when he apparently interrupted a burglary in his Orting garage.

"I'd like to make it known that Mike was well loved," said family member Tim McCoy. "Mike was a 'just' man."

The family invited us in to share their story. When tragedy strikes, family members rush to give comfort and to give strength.

Compton's family is rallying around wife, Nickie. She's the one who found her husband dead on the ground in front of their home early Wednesday morning.

"And a phrase he used very often was 'that's just not right.'  And I can hear him saying that and on that night, Wednesday morning, he knew something wasn't right in his neighborhood," McCoy said.

They believe he went to investigate a burglary inside his garage and Compton ended up in a struggle. Police say he'd been shot in the head when his own shotgun was used against him.

Police are following up on leads and have interviewed several people.

"We have spoken to a number of individuals of interest and we're also talking extensively of course with members of the community about any information that they might have that would help lead us to the suspect," said Orting police chief Bill Drake

CrimeStoppers reward posters are going up all over town offering a $1,000 reward.  But Compton's family hopes it's not just money that will bring forth information, but also a sense of just wanting to do the right thing for a man who was well liked and strong member of the community.

"We'd just like to make a plea as a family for anyone to come forward with anything they know so we can have resolve," McCoy said.

Family and friends are spreading the fliers around and getting ready for a celebration of Mike's life next Friday.  He was a fraud investigator at Key Bank and a fund has been set up in his name at any branch.
