Panhandler shot by Tacoma police officer

SEATTLE -- A Tacoma Police officer shot and wounded a panhandler Saturday afternoon after the person charged the officer, according to police.

Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said the incident happened just after 3 p.m. near E. 28th St. and Portland Ave.

Cool said officer was making contact with the panhandler when the man charged, prompting the officer to fire.

The panhandler was hit and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The officer has six years on the force and is now on administrative leave, Cool said.
