Actor Patrick Dempsey wins bid to buy Tully's

SEATTLE -- It appears "Dr. McDreamy" will be making a few more house calls in Seattle after his bid to buy the Tully's Coffee chain was accepted.
Patrick Dempsey's "Global Baristas" investment team was one of seven groups interested in Tully's. All the groups spent Thursday giving presentations to a bankruptcy judge, and late Thursday night Dempsey announced that his group had prevailed.
After the presentations, Dempsey Tweeted, "We met the green monster, looked her in the eye, and...SHE BLINKED! We got it! Thank you Seattle!"
When the long day of meetings let out after 11 p.m., Dempsey said he plans on spending much more time in Seattle. He also spoke about keeping Tully's employees on the job.
"People are passionate about this brand and about what's going on with the jobs in this city," he said. "To keep all those jobs in the company intact, that was a big turning point when it was decided that if you break it up, it's not something that's acceptable."
Earlier in the day, he said his plan to buy the company hasn't been percolating long.
"It happened very quickly, in the last month or so," Dempsey said. "Things started coming together."
Dempsey, who stars as Dr. Derek Shepherd on ABC's Grey's Anatomy -- which is set in Seattle -- says his team is in good position to takeover Tully's and he'd like to make Seattle a second home.
"I love it here -- even the weather is great to me," Dempsey said. "I woke up this morning and looked out and saw the ferry boats coming in and out. Great people -- certainly with the success of the show there's a fondness to this community."
He says his desire to give back to the Emerald City and possibly save hundreds of jobs is a main reason he's trying to resuscitate the ailing coffee company.
"I think some of the players involved in this deal want to take those jobs away, and you're looking at an economy that's rough to get jobs," Dempsey said. "I went by one of the stores yesterday and the employees are deeply concerned. That's one thing we care deeply about."
While at the Tully's Wednesday, Dempsey was served by lead barista Chris Bustamante.
"I come outside, I look at the register and I’m like, that guy looks familiar," Bustamante said. "Our also standard is, you know, a name on the cup, and so I was like, 'Can I get your name for the cup?' And he just looks at me and he smiles and he’s like, 'It's Patrick.' And I was like, 'Oh, I know who you are. It’s very nice to meet you.' It was a very normal conversation."
Bustamante said Dempsey really wanted to get a feel for the company.
"He wants to know how we feel and what we want in the company," Bustamante said. "Of course he’s going to have his own questions as well because he's so involved in trying to buy the company as well. He wants to be involved with his employees as well.
"I think it’s very good he’s trying to take an interest because his name is so well-known it will make our name well-known as well."
Tully's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October. Quite a few of the company's stores around Seattle have already been shutdown. The company currently has 47 company-run locations in Washington and California, as well as 58 licensed stores around the nation.
Tully's officials were appreciative of Dempsey's efforts.
"It’s certainly wonderful that he’s so supportive of the company and has expressed such a strong interest in Tully’s," said Diane Guerts, Tully's director of marketing and public relations. "We are certainly are very excited and positive about moving forward with them if they do come out on top today."
One of the companies Dempsey had to fend off was Starbucks.
"We have no desire to be Starbucks at all," Dempsey said. "We have a very good plan, and I think the right person will get the sale at the end of the day."
Sources leaving Thursday's meeting said it was one of the most controversial auctions they've been to and expect there to be an appeal.

I think it's fantastic. 2013 looks to be a year of great promise for the area!
Hope springs eternal. This guy will have to face higher taxes that ever from the Fed and we all know that the State of Washington is not business friendly because of it's high tax rates. Good luck indeed, but if you don't have enough money to buy the business and bribe politicians with "campaign donations" you will go down.
Yeah "Dr McDreamy!" Seattle is all about coffee and Starbucks is different than Tully's, would like to see it stay that way!
Congratulations,
Â
Dempsey's investment group could never have pulled off a win without the textbook perfect advance PR work of "Dr. McDreamy".
Â
Well played my friends!
Â
I love their espresso shake, OMG so good. Thank goodness that's saved!
I'm glad somebody got it because they really want to save the company instead of parting it out.
I have never liked Starbucks coffee. and while I have not had alot of Tully's, the coffee I had was very good.
I'm impressed with Mr. Dempsey and his motives. Great that people will be keeping their jobs.
Â
Hey Patrick, thanks!  I love Tully's. Always have. The roast is not as dark as I recall as that of Starbucks so more caffeine. When I saw the initial announcement I thought you were just going to be a face on the deal but this is apparently not the case and I like that even more.  Didnât realize there was so much interest in the company. Welcome to Seattle and good luck with your new venture. Iâll tune in next week in honor of this an watch Grayâs.
Tullyâs is one of the brands we feed into our machine here at home. I think this guy means well, and I hope he knows what he is getting in to. Mostly I am cheering along with the Tullyâs employees who will remain employed. This sounds like a real win-win situation. Tomorrow I will buy some more of their product. I always try to support local business, besides it is great coffee. Good luck and way to go.  Â
Congratulations for showing a sincere interest in a local company. Â I have always liked Tully's coffees. Â Now we have McDreamy's Tully. Â I love it. I'm glad Patrick Dempsey was successful & I support his success. Thank-you for stepping forward to save Tully's & jobs. Jo Ford
I don't know if this is part of the reasoning, but it seems a little bit like he is after the publicity. Come on, you know the reply would have been different if his show had been based in somewhere other than Seattle.
However, with that said, I really hope this works out. I think Tully's is great. I don't mind Starbucks but they jus tprovide completely different atmospheres as well as have different strengths when it comes to beverages.
@fb_is_my_news_source Doubt it had anything to do with the PR. He doesn't need PR at this point, and could get a good PR campaign for a nano-fraction of what he spent.  Perhaps he just liked the idea of getting into business.Â
starbucks shouldn't have all the fun... i won't allow it... patrick, go for it! for consumers, a small competition is better than no competition at all... hopefully, this will keep starbucks on their toes...  as a long time starbucks customer, this is a good news!Â
"Patrick Dempsey, part of an investment team called "Global Baristas," is one of seven groups interested in Tully's that are making their presentations to a bankruptcy judge Thursday."
Â
Whoever wrote this article:Â Do you realize that you just called Patrick Dempsey a group?Â
Â
And I don't even know if that mistake is worse than saying "one of seven groups that ARE making..."Â
Â
It is so frustrating reading your articles because of your questionable grammar and editing.Â

@DaveP  @lakeview Because somebody is frustrated by the crappy writing of an "news article" you call them a loser ?? Seriously, man you probably need to go take some anger management classes or at least grow up a little bit.
Wish you all the best Patrick. As for Starbucks, well, there is more than enough room for Tully's and Starbucks; I like both. Tully's had a contract with the place I work at, hopefully they can get it back. I would rather have Tully's here than Starbucks, Tully's taste just as good and are less expensive. Sorry Starbucks, but I prefer to pay $2 for my moca over $4.
The best part of waking up would be some McDreamy in my cup!!! Way to go Mr. Dempsey! Thank you for making the effort to save Tully's. I personally love Tully's coffee and seek them out first. I will NOT patron a Starbucks......ever. Even at home, all my Keurig coffee's are Tully's brand.
Patrick Dempsey, we will make room for you anytime, hon!
Though I wish him well, I hope he's not betting the farm on it. This is a tough business. Comes down to lease deals.
I do not know why he's not in Hollywood movies often?
@Dozen 123 i think he love rancing too so if he was in Hollywood much over he will have no time for racing. i think so.
@McDoc  @Dozen 123 Correct. He runs an auto racing team that has been running in the Rolex Grand-Am series for a number of years now, and branched out to the American Le Mans Series last year, and actually drives the cars himself during the endurance races.
Meow.... Â McDreamy.
Go get em Patrick!!! Put Starbucks out of business as punishment to Howard Schultz for selling off our Sonics a few years ago. Best of luck buddy, hope the deal goes through for you.... I'd buy coffee from you every day!
We need more good guys like him. Â If he succeeds, love to see him as Grand Marshal at Seafair for saving Tullys.
Starbucks is gross. The only way Tully's is going to survive is if people start to realize how overpriced and disgusting Starbucks is. I have NEVER gotten a decent cup of coffee from Starbucks. The only thing worthwhile there was their Salted Hot Cocoa and they quit carrying it.
@Tattooed_Angel I'm with you. I loved Tully's but there are so few of them. Smooth coffee and the best dark chocolate mocha there is. I hope he brings fresh ideas and helps them expand. Starbucks will still get some of my money because of convenience but I'm looking forward to Tully's having a strong comeback.
@Tattooed_Angel I don't think most people drink their plain ol' "coffee" I don't care how good Tully's is. I'm not going to go seek them out when there's a Starbucks in plain sight.
@Tattooed_Angel You do realize that this is just your opinion, right? It's pretty obvious that the vast majority of people do no agree with you, hence the size and popularity of Starbucks versus Tullys.
He wouldn't sell the Sonic's to an outsider and let them out of town either Howard. Screw Starbucks.
@godawgs Capitalism has no emotions, you needs to know that?Key Arena was not a good ground for the NBA team, the people in Seattle was not open to put their money for a new arena for the NBA team.If people from the rainy city has no emotions for NBA team after 40 years in Seattle, Starbucks owner should not have feelings for the dirty game of nerves

@godawgs No kidding. Schultz is a Sonics hater, and guess what... I hate Starbucks! I hope Patrick and Tully's steal a good chunk of their business. Guess what Schultz- payback is a b***ch and I hope Tully's sweeps you guys in revenue for 2013.Â
@keepthepeace28  @godawgs Haha. Key word "hope". Many people hope for many things that never come to fruition.Â
I have loved this man ever since I saw his young movie back in the day called "Can't Buy me love"....I fell for his looks, personality and he can do NO WRONG in my book!! He is beautiful!!
Buy Tully's up I say buy it up and invest!!
I LOVE TULLY'S Coffee and Boeing got rid of their contract with Starbucks and went with Tully's and I couldn't be more grateful for that.
I hope that when he buys it, he'll visit the Auburn Plant to give us a visit and a way to thank him.
Oh yeah an autograph wouldn't hurt either!!
Â
Â
@reelin21 -- My all time favorite movie! Loved it then and love it now!
Can he make the coffee taste better?? I'd surely go by more often then...
Hope he succeeds. And his character on Grey's Anatomy is Derek Shepherd, not Jack Shepard or Derrick Shepard.
I love it when celebrities try to give back in a meaningful way. Go, Mr. Dempsey, go!
HIs character's name is DEREK Shepherd. Not JACK.
@iliketurtlez Mea culpa. Got my ABC characters mixed up. Jack Shephard was "Lost" :)
If he is able to pull it off, that will be great. It sounds like he has good intentions and really wanting to save jobs -- a good alternative for people who don't want to go to Starbucks.
Good for him! :) he's so handsome :]Â
Oh, I hope they succeed. Â We have enough Starbucks already. Â There's room for both and Tully's provides a better product.
"Yes, I'd like to order an over-roasted, horrible tasting mocha and some jazz music to make it go down easier."
"Sorry, sir. This is Tully's. Starbucks is right across the street on the NW, NE and SE corners. They can help you with that."
Â
See? That's how Tully's is losing business. Stop sending customers to Starbucks! Your coffee is much better.
@Getov Mylon I disagree. I have always found Tully's coffee to be burnt and disgusting. To each his own.
It's not Jack Shepard, it's Derrick Shepard....
