TACOMA, Wash. -- A 19-year-old Pierce County man was sentenced Thursday to at least 50 years in prison for raping and murdering his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist called the crime "exceptionally despicable," and the victim's mother said she hates herself for leaving her son in "the hands of a monster."

On a Friday night in late March, prosecutors say Jake Musga beat and raped Laura Colley's 2-year-old boy, Chayson.

Colley and Musga began dating after the pair met in rehab. On the evening of March 29, Colley went out for the night and left Chayson with Musga at roughly 6 p.m.

Sometime that night, a neighbor heard fighting, thumping, running and crying. When the neighbor knocked on the door of their Tacoma apartment, nobody answered.

At 4 a.m. the next morning, someone called 911 after seeing Musga holding a badly bruised boy who was not breathing. Chayson was taken to a trauma center, but he didn't survive his injuries.

Hospital staff said the boy was in "major shock" and his condition was "catastrophically bad" when he arrived at the hospital. He was bruised from head to toe and had a blood alcohol level of .12. Investigators later found a baby bottle full of vodka.

In court on Thursday, Colley held her hands over her ears and kept her head down in court, not wanting to hear the horrific details of her two year old's final hours. She said she'd never forgive herself for leaving the boy with Musga.

"I now have to live the rest of my life without my beautiful son and with the knowledge that I left my son in the hands of a monster," she said. "I hate myself every day for that fact."

Musga also spoke in court. He offered up no motive for the devestating crime, but did apologize to Colley.

"I just want to say I'm sorry," he said. "Not a single day goes by when I don't think about Chayson and wish I could bring him back to his mother."

The judge was unmoved and sentenced Musga to 50 years to life in prison. Musga will be 70 years old before a Department of Corrections board will even consider releasing him.
