Police: Kids called 911 from back seat to report DUI dad

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say a Portland man was arrested for investigation of drunken driving after a 911 call from his children riding in the back seat of his Jeep Cherokee.
The Albany Democrat-Herald reports that one of the children jumped out of the vehicle barefoot on New Year's Day at a highway pullout near Hoodoo ski resort and ran into traffic, seeking help.
The newspaper says a passer-by stopped, put the child in his vehicle and removed another child as well, confiscating the driver's keys until police arrived.
State police logs indicate the driver failed field sobriety tests after an Albany trooper arrived. Police say 47-year-old Michael Edward Stout was also arrested for investigation of reckless endangering and reckless driving.
A trooper took the children to Salem where they were met by their mother.

I wonder how old these kids were...I also wonder about the part where they jumped out, barefoot, at a highway turnout. Did their dad pull over into the turn out? Was the car stopped? So bizarre as it's written.Â
Â
Whatever the reality was, I am sure they were scared to death, both of retribution as well as for their lives. Thank goodness they were strong enough to go against their fear of retribution.
Dannnng, now those are some glossy watery eyes..
I'm so glad the kids are ok. What a major a**. It's too bad drunk drivers can't find a way to kill or injure only themselves when they drive. It really sucks that when they make that selfish decision it often takes so many innocent people with them.
Let's hope he doesn't retaliate against the kids. I've heard of this kind of thing backfiring and breaking up the family.
@MajorSkeptic Probably already separated or divorced.Â
What a bafoon. I am glad the kids are ok.
Good for the kids! I am so glad they did what they did. They very well saved not only their own lives, but the lives other people out there as well. In my opinion, when someone CHOOSES to drink and drive they should be charged with the equivalent of attempted murder -- The vehicle can be considered a deadly weapon and they are knowingly going out there risking the lives of you, me, our families and friends as well as every single person in their proximity.
Good for the kids. Sounds like they fell far enough from the tree to have common sense.

Good thing the guy turned out to be drunk otherwise, Mr. Good Samaritan winds up on the 5 o'clock news with "Crazed Motorist Abducts Children From Stranger's Car!" as the lead story.
@Getov Mylon I doubt that would be the headline.  The children jumped out of the car seeking help.  It doesn't matter if he was drunk or not, the kids were freaked out enough to jump out of the car and even call 911.  Somehow I doubt this is the first time they've been in this situation.
Is that? Noo... just a resemblance.Â
Â
I hear you can get DUI SR-22 insurance at V*rn F*** Insurance, though.
@Getov Mylon He does look like him! I wonder if anyone honks when they drive by him! LOL!
@The WA Mama  @Getov "Why, yes little lady, I AM that guy in those commercials. Buy me a drink, sailor?"
@Getov Mylon That's exactly what I was thinking too!
@katiemcc I consider it a victory to be the first to state it.
Â
Mylon: "Hammering Home The Obvious For Longer Than You!"
Shouldn't he also be charged with child endangerment? I hope their mother is a much better parent than this guy.
@Table9 Hence the reckless endagerment charge.
@Surveyor1 My mistake. I thought reckless endangerment was a different charge than child endangerment.
I'm glad the passer-by was there and willing to help.
Hooray for the guy who took the kids and took the man's keys. He's a hero in my books!
Those poor kids. One day they think their dad is the strongest man alive, and a super hero. The next day, they are so afraid that they are calling 911. I hope these kids NEVER blame themselves for doing this and always know that they are hero's in many people eyes.Â
@Just my say I'm betting there's been more than a day between those beliefs, sadly.
Not defending the DUI but I'm betting this clown is second guessing the need to provide his spawn with cell phones.
