Police: Man beaten by woman with cane after racist rant
SEATTLE, Wash. -- A man learned the hard way that words have consequences when he was attacked by a woman with a cane after allegedly yelling racial slurs at her and a number of other people on a downtown sidewalk last Thursday.
According to the Seattle Police Department report for the incident, officers arrived in the 500 block of Third Avenue shortly after midnight to find the suspect screaming racial slurs at a number of mostly black patrons standing outside a nearby business.
Bystanders told officers the suspect started yelling racial slurs at the group before getting in a particular woman's face and pointing at her. The woman had since left the scene, but bystanders said the suspect told her he was going to cut off her head and stick it down her throat.
In response, the woman started beating the man in the face with her cane, cutting his lip bad enough to require stitches, according to the report.
According to the report, the suspect told officers he confronted the woman because she did not pay him for some hair clippers he sold her.
“I advised [the suspect] that some people get offended when you use certain words,” Officer Crumpton wrote in the report. “He stated he did not care and he was proud to be a ‘white cracker.’”

Sounds to me like the guy got in her face, she got scared and swing at him before he could make good on his threats. I am sorry but if I was elderly or disabled (which I am assuming she is since she has a cane) and a (more than likely larger) man was screaming how he was going to kill me in my face you bet I would beat his butt with anything I could get my hands on and get the heck out of there before I ended up dead.Â

There aren't any words that deserve a physically violent reaction, hopefully this lady is charged with battery and the idiot is charged with making death threats.
@TheReal_Fedor why is its people like you  think you can do whatever you want and say anything you want and get in someone face and make threats. Then you think you have the right to just walk away he is lucky that all he got is a fat lip. If he had got in my face and made threats like that he would have gotten a lot worse. This lady is not guilty of anything but self defense.  I'm a retried Police officer and if I had that call I would have lock him up for disorderly conduct and making threats he would have been the one to go to jail.   If you are crazy enough to walk up to someone and say your going to cut there head offf you should not be surprised that you get your ass kicked.Â
It's always interesting to watch the closet bigots come out in force. Notice all the, "how dare the media ever suggest any white person is racist, ever," fury taking place. There's an easy translation to this bizarre response. These are people who are bigots, but they're just smart enough to grasp that bigotry isn't popular, so they keep that in the closet. However, they're not smart enough to stay calm when someone points out that bigotry is stupid, so any time any reference even hinting that bigotry is bad is made, such as in this report, they freak out. "How dare you suggest racism is wrong! Black people get to use slurs sometimes and get away with it! I'm so oppressed! GRRRRR!"Â
What's truly amazing is that so many people fail to recognize how infantile this kind of response is...

@SgtPepperSpray I know, I read the headline initially this morning and now it's changed. Also, bagsofdirt I did see the comment you posted and I was wondering when Komo was going to delete it. What people fail to see there are always two sides to a story and there is more to this story than the media is reporting, it's not easy to get the truth.
@SgtPepperSpray Yup...that was my post, wherein I cited the fact that black people often refer to themselves by that word. It's pretty clear that the beaten white guy was calling them by that name and the all black crowd were calling him "cracker" "honky" etc. etc.  But as we know, only White people can be racist.Â
Why is he a suspect? She was the one causing bodily harm. We still have freedom of speech - or do we, even if it is offensive. Most anything one could say will offend someone. In our politically correct world it is difficult to say anything that will not be.Â

I may not find it offensive but I would prevent someone from following through on that threat. He threatened her life.
@contraryjim Racial slurs aside, he threatened to cut off her head and shove it down her throat. That kinda sounds like a threat to me. I honestly could care less what anyone calls me, but you threaten me with violence or violence against my family, well I will probably react. Of course calling 911 would have been the best course of action, but the cane seemed effective as well.

@Ben Ezzell @HawkEye The article states she had already left the scene and come back, she wasn't defending herself because he wasn't attacking her.  For threats to be a crime they need to be credible, these threats don't sound credible.  Calling someone a racial slur is not a hate crime.  The guy is an idiot and should be charged with disturbing the peace or harassment but the woman should also be charged with battery.Â
@HawkEye Since he was threatening to kill her, she has a very good reason for what she did. I highly suspect the prosecutor's office would decline to file charges in this case, with her reacting in defense to a man threatening her with a hate crime. The reason she isn't charged with assault might also have something to do with the fact that she left the scene. Nothing in the article says they are looking for her or even that they have her name or anything more than a general description. Can't charge someone whose identity is not known.
