Police: Please don't put explosives in recycling bins

SEATTLE -- Seattle residents love to recycle, but police are reminding everyone that no matter how green you are, you should never attempt to recycle your homemade explosives.

The reminder became necessary Tuesday morning when employees at a recycling facility in Delridge discovered that someone had attempted to recycle a cardboard box packed with homemade explosives.

"Here are several items which should not be placed in your recycling bin: VHS tapes, un-rinsed cans and homemade explosives," police spokesman Jonah Spangenthal-Lee said in a Tuesday news release.

The workers called police, and officers arrived at the South Idaho Street facility moments later. After evacuating the building, police called in the department's Bomb Squad detectives to dismantle and dispose of the explosives.

Police say the bombs were built using fireworks.

Anyone who needs to dispose of leftover explosives, ammunition or firearms is asked to call SPD's non-emergency line at (206) 625-5011.
