Police unsure if recent North Seattle attacks are linked

SEATTLE -- Police are trying to figure out if a handful of assaults in the north end of the city are somehow connected.
The first attack happened near the Northgate Mall on Friday, and on Sunday there was an attempted abduction in Greenwood. Another woman told police she was attacked early Sunday morning near a Wallingford bar.
The latest attack took place Monday morning as a woman was jogging around Green Lake.
Police are concerned enough about the attacks that they sent out an email alerting neighborhood groups to the patterns of the crimes and warning the public to be on alert.
According to police, the woman was at the north end of the lake near Wallingford Avenue North and Green Lake Drive North around 6:30 a.m. On Monday when a man grabbed her and tried to pull her into some nearby bushes.
The woman was able to fight the man off, and he ran northbound, according to police.
A bicyclist attempted to follow the man but lost him in the neighborhood.
Officers arrived on the scene but were unable to find the alleged attacker.
According to police, the woman was shaken up but not hurt. She was unable to provide a detailed description of the man.
"I think it's alarming, but it's also not surprising," said Britta Kallevang, who lives and runs in the area.
Monday morning's incident was the fourth attack on a woman in North Seattle in a four-day span. On Friday night, someone grabbed a woman while she was walking home near Northgate Mall.
The victim said a thin man with bad teeth pulled her into the bushes. She fought back as he sexually assaulted her.
Just before 1:30 a.m. On Sunday, a woman was attacked shortly after she left Lenny's Place in the 2200 block of North 56th Street. She told police she noticed a man watching her as she left the bar. When she noticed the same man following her, the woman began running, but the man caught up with her and knocked her to the ground.
The woman fought back and the man eventually gave up on his attack and ran way, according to police. She suffered minor injuries.
She described her attacker as a thin white male in his late 20′s, 5'9″ tall, 160 pounds with short brown hair and was last seen wearing a red plaid shirt and blue jeans.
On Sunday night, a different woman was able to fight off a would-be kidnapper who tried to pull her into a van less than a mile away from where the victim was attacked Monday morning.
Police say it is unusual to have so many similar incidents in four days, but they don't know if the attacks are connected.
Despite the recent string of attacks, many in the area say they still feel safe.
"You don't go into areas where there's a lot of bushes. The parks here, for the most part, they cut underneath so you can see if there's somebody around, so I feel safe," said Christine Ellin of Ballard.
Police posted a number of safety tips online in response to the attacks. The big one is to make sure you're not distracted when you're walking. They say you shouldn't text, check email or listen to music while you run or walk.
As long as we have to live with scum in our society, people need to use some common sense and not put themselves in that position.
<sarc> Maybe a bunch of people should get together and have a candlelight vigil, asking the attackers to stop, turn themselves in and get help. </sarc>
Thankfully they were all able to get away.
@Thunder Yes, thankfully. It's important to note that they got away because they "fought back".Â
Wish people, especially women would take a self defense course to help them in situations like this. Don't be a victim.
@Blindman Good point! I teach self defense and it doesn't take long to learn the basics of "strike hard and fast".Â
As long as women go running alone in dark places, parks, or where there aren't any people around, this will keep happening. Period. It doesn't matter what a woman SHOULD be able to do, because as long as this keeps happening, what SHOULD be is irrelevant. I simply don't understand repeatedly putting oneself in a proven dangerous situation with absolutely no safeguard for emergencies.Â
@jowsuf the victim was running during DAYLIGHT and was attacked on a WELL TRAFFICKED intersection!!
"The suspect was described as a white male, possibly in his twenties, 5â7â³-5â8â³ tall, medium build, short brown hair, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt or jacket, and dark pants."

Â
Just because the description is not significantly detailed doesn't mean that someone didn't see something before or after this attack that could help police. Someone could be reading this right now and remember that they saw a guy matching this description getting into a car or going into a home nearby. You never know. I think holding back descriptive information serves no purpose.  Â

seems like most rapists pull their victims into vans or bushes. we need to make vans and bushes illegal, unless you can prove you need a van for work or bushes for shade. and if you want to buy a bush you should have to have a background check to be sure you are not a sex offender.
@dorimonsonfan For the love of god stop parroting that stupid line over and over on every news story!! It wasn't even original or clever MONTHS ago!!!Â
@dorimonsonfan I hope you're just making a dumb joke and that you don't really think gun control is analogous to van and bush control.
I support people choosing to arm themselves if they take a class and learn how to be safe, and how to shoot.
Â
But a jogger. presumably tackled from behind, how would she get to her gun? And, was she listening to headphones or otherwise cutting off her awareness (NOT blaming the victim here!)? Maybe for that situation, a big dog or two would be better? A working deterrent is better than a defense. It's too bad that any of it necessary, but it has always been so.Â
@Insomniac Dreams How would the attacker know there is a gun?
@Bornhere You shoot them, then they are well informed.
So scary, I run Greenlake a lot. I would hope my two big dogs that run with me would help deter a kidnapper.
@Sunray24 I don't think it's a coincidence that none of those attacked had dogs.
@Sunray24 I hope your two big dogs are scary enough. Dogs usually do put off these human kind of mutts. I have a small dog that makes a lot of noise and growls and barks like she's going for everybody's throat and I have seen some people stay away.  Stay aware and stay safe. :)
@Sunray24 Be safe out there. It's crazy scary.
Yet another person attacked in Seattle. Is crime increasing, or is it simply being reported on more often? One cannot help but note the correlation between Seattle being the most anti-gun city in WA and also the most crime ridden. If you must live or work in Seattle, I would recommend being prepared to defend yourself and always maintain situational awareness when out in public. The criminals are bold there and do not fear the public.
@dg54321 Most crime ridden? Ever been to Yakima?
@dg54321 Seattle is not the most crime ridden city. Where do you get your information? Try living in Detroit or Chicago, then report back what you learned about high crime.Â
@dg54321 - I think it is being reported more. It seems to go in waves. The crime de jour at the moment is guns. In a couple months it will be something else. Remember when car jackings were all the rage?
Ban running!
@Paul Beyond overplayed and unoriginal. These comments are way past even beating a dead horse. Anyone who says this in news stories literally sounds like a complete idiot now.
Another reason I dont like to run.
same guy, possibly?
@Komo Dragon Just talked to SPD and updated the story. They do not believe the incidents are related.
This is why women should be armed, there are psychos like this out there. Imagine all the other women who couldn't manage to fight them off.
Â
Arm women so they can take out the thugs.
@NW-Economist Learning how to react and punch and kick effectively are also very important for everyone to learn!
