Police: Woman lied about masked man, shot herself
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A Bellingham woman who claimed a masked man shot her in the chest Thursday morning actually shot herself, according to police.
The 25-year-old woman told police a man wearing a mask knocked on her apartment door in the 3000 block of Pacific Street Thursday morning.
She said she opened the door and was immediately shot in the chest. She said the masked man then ran away and she called 911.
Police immediately launched a search for the shooter using a helicopter and police dogs, but now Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young says the woman made up the entire story and actually shot herself.
Detectives interviewed the woman Friday afternoon, and that's when she told them there was no masked man. She told officers she accidentally shot herself.
Officers recovered the small-caliber handgun used in the shooting and learned that it belongs to the victim's boyfriend, who was not at home at the time of the shooting.
The Whatcom County Prosecutor's Office is now reviewing the case for potential criminal charges.
The woman's current condition is unknown.

She lied about shooting herself and blamed a masked man? Tells us much about her character and lack thereof. Wonder how many other stories she has made up throughout the years. 100% Whackjob!
Bellingham police now face lawsuit for breaking down the door of a nearby residence. Police kicked in the door terrorized the occupants who were in bed with guns drawn. The residents had no knowledge of or relationship with the gal the shot herself and cops admitted they screwed up the address.
There's still more to this story. She realized her fist lie set of a huge hub bub, then lied again most likely.

So the handgun belongs to the boyfriend and she accidentally shot herself in the chest? She's either a complete idiot, or she is covering for her abusive boyfriend. Hope the police got it right this time and at least double checked the alibi for the boyfriend. And then throw the book at this responsible gun owner if she did in fact shoot herself and lie about it.Â

This is bizarre.  Unfortunately these kind of stories will stick in people's minds as somebody got shot while opening a door rather than the entire thing was a fraud.
