Pro-life supporters pelted in drive-by coffee attack
SEATTLE -- A handful of pro-life supporters found themselves on the wrong end of two Seattle stereotypes -- liberal views and coffee -- during a drive-by attack Saturday morning.
According to the Seattle Police Department, five people were holding pro-life signs on the sidewalk near North Northgate Way and Meridian Avenue North around 9:40 a.m. when a black SUV drove by, launching a full cup of coffee out its window.
The coffee hit one of the protesters' signs but didn't injure or burn anyone, according to police.
One of the victims got the SUV's license plate number before it drove off.
Officers stopped by the registered address, but the SUV wasn't there. Police have not assigned the case for a follow-up.
"Tolerance" at its best...
So Strarbucks has a new promotional compaign!
can i throw some coffee on all the campaign signs that are going to sprout in the coming months ?
So apparently its OK to harass people holding signs. Armed with this info, I cant wait for the next group of people standing on a street corner holding anti-gun signs.....Â
@JeepRex Calm down. Don't start another battle b/c of a few people who got out of hand w/ their coffee. BTW, we surely have never heard of a pro-lifer killing, murdering doctors who performed abortions, have we?
@Koawoodplayer Sarcasm is hard to portray on the internet......
So that makes this ok?
Must have been "Pro-Birth" day yesterday, I saw one of these groups in front of the Federal Way Planned Parenthood. I don't consider these groups to be "Pro-Life" since none of them seem to care what happens to the baby after its born so long as it is born. I'm Pro-Choice myself, HOWEVER, I don't agree with using abortion as a form of birth control. It should be left up to the woman and her doctor (and the dad if they are involved, though most of the time it is the guy wanting the girl to get the abortion).
I think the driver was stupid in throwing the coffee (waste of good coffee (unless it was Starbucks)) and I hope they at least realize this.
Protesting should have rules. If you are standing by the side of the road you should be allowed to do it unmolested. If you are trying to shut down the freeway, off ramp, or major artery, you should be shot. It is really quite simple.
@lin
Protesting does have rules and laws. Not to mention there should be common sense exercised by all parties. Jumping to shooting someone for blocking a highway is a bit extreme donât you think? I donât like it when they block access to things either but I donât wish the people to be shot.
Blockers stink, downshift and apply throttle.
@lin Another idiotic statement from a gun supporter, eh?
Sounds like a hate crime.
@Obewise Hate? How? Hating the hypocrites who are Pro Life, yet don't blink an eye when an abortion doctor is murdered? Don't see the hypocrisy in their beliefs and actions? Morons.
Too bad I wasn't there.  Never bring coffee to a gun fight
If this was done to pro-abortionists the FBI would be investigating!
At least it wasn't a salmon.
find these individuals and prosecute them. There's no place for this in civil discourse
@TruthinAdverts Or a waste of coffee..... That stuff is expensive
Another of the liberal free speech crowd. Onlyfree if you agree with them.
Many of the comments regarding this news story from conservatives condemning such actions against protestors I agree with because of the right to protest and free speech, however others are just plain stupid. I personally am against abortion but not a right to life conservative zealots who believe their way is the right way without regard to the woman's right to choose and have used violence including threatening doctors and bombing abortion clinics as a means to protest in other parts of the country over the years. So I guess when it comes to liberal versus conservatives in regards to means of protesting on many subjects, including threats on Democratic Candidates, conservatives have little room to pass judgement. So take a bow conservatives to your tendencies towards violence regarding protests. That is the ways of the Right Wing.  Â
growlerxrunner...oh yeah, there have been all kinds of violent conservative protests...let's see..LA Riots...(oops liberals)....WTO Riots (oh wait those were flaming liberals again)...numerous May Day riots....(oops liberals again)....G20 Riots....(crap...liberals again)...so where exactly are all of these horrible conservative riots? The last one I can think of is the Whiskey Rebellion! I think then you have to go back to the Boston Tea Party. The difference between liberals and conservatives is you could have a million conservatives and there would be no violence. All it takes is a few liberals and wham...riots!
@sometimesrightÂ
I'm glad to know that there's someone out there that went up to every single rioter in each of these events and asked them all where they were on the political scale. Â With insights like that, you should have your own show on a news and information network.
All sarcasm aside, have you considered the idea that these riots were started by and participated in by groups of people that just like to cause trouble? Â Some people will use any excuse to be destructive and violent, but peaceful protests seem to be their excuse du jour to wreak havoc because they can blend in with the rest of the crowd before causing the destruction and then let the group doing the protesting take the blame for it.
Are you really going to sit there and tell me that all conservatives are above causing destruction either to make a point or to make liberals look bad? Â Liberal or conservative, some people just like to cause trouble. Â It's not a trait specific to liberals or conservatives. Â To think that liberals are responsible for nearly every riot that has ever taken place in this country is incredibly naive.
@growlerxrunner
wow. This is such the liberal paradox. Tolerance at all cost unless of course someone has a different view than you, then they should be silenced and bullied. You have extremists on both sides. 99.99% of the pro life movement is very peaceful. I think youâd be hard pressed to find a pro lifer whoâs goal is to control a womanâs body. The goal is to protect those innocent babies who have no voice in whether they live or die. Who are killed by doctors ripping their extremities from their bodies or slowly poisoning them over a course of 24 hours before extracting them and discarding them. The pro life movement is not about women itâs about protecting those babies that for some reason our society says can be killed because they have no voice.@dmrudolph @growlerxrunner --- ".....unless of course someone has a different view than you, then they should be silenced and bullied."
Sounds very much like today's Republicans who are controlled by the extreme right.
Yeah -the party all about smaller, less intrusive government - that is unless government can be used to force thier beliefs, lifestyles and so on into law so that no other beliefs, lifestyles, etc. are allowed.  That's the Republicans today.
So be proud. Be very proud.  As you all used to say - wait until the next election... Americans have learned much about the extreme right and it's demand that life be only thier way. We are running away from extremism and abandoning the extreme right. Â
@FormerMarineSgt @dmrudolph @growlerxrunner Extreme left is way, WAY worse... as we will sadly be learning more and more about.
I'm pro-choice, but this kind of behavior is just stupid and conter-productive. We live in a democracy. People are entitled to their opinions. These debates should be fought in the courts and in public forums like this. The only thing throwing a cup of coffee expresses is "I'm a blithering, vengeful idiot."
We need to outlaw coffee cups because apparently like guns they can hurt people
"Police have not assigned the case for a follow-up."
Clearly not a priority. But maybe if the protestors published the plate# these jerks can experience some equally offensive "free speech" as their thrown coffee cup.
@IconoclastThe cops in Everett are not doing anything since they wrapped up a 2 month long investigation into bikini baristas.... Put them on the case.
They might take it if the driver was topless.
@Iconoclast Who knows if the registered owner was driving or even in the car. It could some bratty kid, thinking he's funny, and if the plates are published, maybe someone who wasn't involved gets "punished" by an equally bad type of zealot - those thinking of getting revenge. The police SHOULD follow up - whoever did this needs to know that it's NOT okay, but the office of public opinion should stay out of it.
So out of control of their emotions these people are that they cannot see a viewpoint opposed to their own without resorting to violent acts. Sad this is the state of affairs in this country. What happened to not liking what a person while at the same time recognizing their right to say it? I don't like a lot of things people say, especially the anti-gun loonies.....I wouldn't take action to stop them from saying whatever nonsense they feel they need to spout.
@dg54321Â
..don't let the actions of these idiots be your basis for the entire pro-choice group. I'm pro-choice and I think the SUV driver and passenger(s) are morons, but not representative of the entire movement.
@dg54321 So very true. I may not like what you say, but I will fight for the right for you to say it. BTW, I am pro choice, but find the actions of people throwing coffee asinine.
The people in the SUV would likely have applauded pictures of clubbed baby seals to protest that former annual event, but have a problem with pictures showing the reality of aborted fetuses. Â Take a bow, liberals. Â
@Opus8no5
âTake a bow liberalsâ, really? That is unadulterated conjecture at best; todayâs heinous attack of a sign may have been nothing more than an ill-advised action of a complete dumbass, or an actual attempt to harm someone â I donât know and neither do you, what I do know it was a dreadful waste of coffee.
Let me ask you this â how are todays near martyred individuals with the pro-life signs different from the characters spinning Pizza signs on the street corners? After all they are both selling a product, whether itâs Chicago Style Pizza or Shock Value. How much are they being paid per hour to try to incense or distract motorist driving past them while waving graphic imaged signs? If they are not being paid, then could they be considered to be zealots in the same vein as the devout followers of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, Or Fanatics of any other religious group? How does that saying go about those wonderful accepting groups, oh I remember now âLove the fetus, and hate the childâ.
I am not a Liberal, merely a cynical casual observer, a recovering Evangelical seeking clarification with a desire to understand the rational of the dogmatic fanatical mindset.
@Opus8no5Â Just as I disagree with this act - see my comment above - so is trying to paint all your adversaries with the brush of their extremists. And yes, the left is guilty of this, too. But on both sides, it's COMPLETELY counter-productive and only polarizes people.
Must be a slow news day.
The coffee hit one of the protesters signs . well what are you going to arrest them for , assault of a sign ?   Why is this in the news ?
@sportbuff01Â If I swing a bat at someone but only hit a post is that not a crime?
No---thats strike one....
@sportbuff01Â How about fining them for littering for a start.
Wow, our Seattle Liberals sure are tolerant of opposing points of view.
We need a bill to prevent these coffee-type attacks in the future.
@SandyBeach Maybe even require coffee buyers to get a coffee carry permit.  ;-)
@Glassman The 4-cup carrier trays should have been banned long ago.
Pretty funny. I don't have any problem with people publicly protesting whatever issues they want. Its a sign that a democracy is working. Whoever threw the coffee was being pretty immature. I don't like seeing these posters of dead fetuses either but it is protected speech.
Like it or not whatever your beliefs, it's a stupid way to disagree with their protests. I've been past them quite a few times in the past, and never saw them act like idiots. Leave them be, everyone is entitled to a peaceful protest.
@workerbee Well maybe I would be inclined to leave them alone if they did not show gigantic pictures of dead aborted fetuses a horrifying site for young children. I don't think that is very peaceful of them.  I can peacefully protest right back at them.Â
@EÂ - Truth is painful and ugly in this case.Â
@E They are only showing what is being killed.
@EI guess you probably only like the free speech that comes with the gay rights parade right?
Evidently you missed the NEA supported "Pi ss Christ"?
@Iconoclast @E @NW-Economist So I can parade around adult magazine pictures in public and it wouldn't be a problem?
@E @NW-Economist They taught you that in government schools? Wherever you learned it, it is false. Pictures are definitely free speech and protected by the Bill of Rights.
@E @Nuclearian @NW-Economist Its STILL art. Protected under Freedom of Speech.
What you all afraid of by it? That our LIVING kids will see that grown ups are BUTCHERS of innocent children? That Americans are HYPOCRITES when we say that Hitler was SO EVIL for what he did to the Jews, but we killed millions more than him, through our abortuaries.
@Nuclearian @E @NW-Economist Yeah but those picture are fake come back when There a pictures of hand drawn fetuses.
@EÂ @NW-Economist Yes pictures are free speech.
Or at least it was when "art" depicting Jesus covered with poop was considered "free speech" by Liberals.
@EÂ @NW-Economist Unfortunately for you, YES it is.
@NW-Economist Pictures aren't free speech.Â
@EÂ @NW-EconomistMy bad, guess you just don't like a lot of free speech and want restrictions on it.
@NW-Economist @E I don't care about gay pride.
