Questions emerge as hunt continues for accused Bellevue killer

BELLEVUE, Wash. - More questions are emerging about a deadly shooting at a Bellevue night spot as police continue their manhunt for the suspected killer.
Meanwhile, a state Liquor Control Board official confirms that Munchbar in Bellevue Square, where the shooting took place, has previous liquor violations on its record - including an earlier one for serving an underage minor.
The bar has been closed since last Monday's shooting due to the ongoing homicide investigation. But on Saturday, the black curtains covering Munchbar were the only visible clue that something is wrong. The yellow crime scene tape is gone, and there were no signs explaining if or when the bar might reopen.
Police say suspect Ja'Mari Alexander Jones was there during the Seahawks victory party that drew a crowd of hundreds when he pulled out a gun and opened fire. One question authorities are asking is why he was there in the first place - since he's underage, only 19 years old.
One source who was at the bar that night tells KOMO News that Munchbar security was horribly lax that night, adding that the nightclub was sorely ill-prepared and failed to have enough staff on site.
KOMO News called Munchbar managers on Saturday, but they wouldn't answer.
Many Seahawks players were in the jam-packed bar when the gunfire erupted after last Sunday's big win.
Court documents say that Jones fired at least five shots in the bar early last Monday morning, killing Deshawn Millikin, 30, of Seattle. Two other people were wounded by the gunfire - a 21-year-old man who sustained gunshots to the hand and arm and a woman who sustained gunpowder burns and may have been grazed by a bullet.
But Jones is a convicted felon - found guilty three years ago of the high-profile murder of Ed McMichael - better known as Seattle's "Tuba Man." Jones is not legally able to carry a gun.
Court documents also say the bar was "extremely overcrowded" - and some say there were more than 600 people there. But how did so many people get in? Nearby restaurants limit maximum capacity to between 200 and 300 people. Again, Munchbar managers did not respond to calls from KOMO News.
Bellevue police are just the first to investigate Munchbar. The state Liquor Control Board is next - and reveals the night spot has past violations.
"They have two (violations) - one for over-service and one for a failed compliance check ... when our enforcement officers go out with underage operatives and they attempt to purchase alcohol," said Mikhail Carpenter of the Liquor Control Board.
Carpenter said the board will request the incident report from Bellevue police when it is completed, and then determine whether there was a violation of liquor laws.
"It's far too early for us to speculate at this point," he said. "We haven't seen the incident report. We don't know exactly what happened. Until we get that information, it's not good practice to speculate."
Meanwhile, no one admits to seeing suspect Ja'Mari Jones after he ran away from the crime - and he remains on the run.

Really?! liquor board violations is the issue?! A convicted mentally ill murderer is free and able to buy a gun is not worth mentioning?!!! I can care less about STUPID LIQUOR BOARD VIOLATIONS! non of those violations can kill anyone.Â
This little s**t is in San Diego by now. Helped along by all his little s**t friends. He's a coward little piece of c*ap. looking for fame by killing people who had no chance to defend themselves. And now, people want to take away the ability of others to defend themselves??? Do you really think that taking away the right to defend yourself is going to stop the killing of innocent people? I question your reasoning.
Really? How about why is the 19 year old free to run around and shoot someone after he was convicted of killing someone a few years ago? Slap him on the hand yet again and then wonder why he does it again you morons.
Place your bets on who was the socialist judge that let scum sack out in the first place.
Â
Hopefully the LEGALLY armed public will save all of us a great deal and waste this cockroach on site.Â
 @pbs7mm Let's ask Judge Mary Yu....
http://www.komonews.com/opinion/kenschram/101805818.html
@pbs7mm Make sure you don't fire your weapon on New Year"s eve.
So much smoke, mirrors, and BS. The question is; why was this sociopath allowed to walk the streets in the first place. Not that criminals have guns, not that this bar had two violations, not that he may have had a poor bringing up. At the time he and his friends beat a man to death because they were bored, he demonstrated that he was broken and not fixable. He continued to verify that anti-social attitude up to committing a second murder. We put down Pit Bulls who are just doing what they are taught, but let filth like this contaminate the air they breathe.    Â
Why is it so hard to find this guy? He's not the smartest rock in the state. Is it that his people are being closed lipped. Then bring them all in and charge them with murder.
I find it amazing that KOMO refuses to correct their error in this article concerning Tuba Man's name. I hope his friends and family don't see this article, or the last one where KOMO made the same mistake. Something so easy to fix, and they refuse to fix it.
Â
And they can't say that they don't know. I sent them two emails about it yesterday.
Â
Tricia Manning-Smith took some of the previous article word for word and included it in her article, so the mistake continues to be recycled.Â
Â
Â
 @lakeview I also find this outrageous especially in light of the fact that people such as yourself have brought it to KOMO's attention and they continue to ignore the fact. What disrespect. Especially when KOMO's own Ken Schram was such an outspoken advocate of seeking a solution to such senseless violence because of what happened to Mr. McMichael.

Make it happen!
Soon!
WHY, WHY gun owners equate gun control with banning guns? Is it too much to ask for training and mental fitness and background checks for ALL and not just 60% of gun owners, and then ALSO go after the illegal gun market with all of our resources available or more? Right wingers live in the 1800s and I worry about their thinking.
 @Socialjusticeforall When the left wingers quit turning these scumbag thugs loose on the streets, maybe everyone will have a sense of security...
 @Socialjusticeforall Here is an example. One brick follows the next, now we have same sex marriage. You give, next time they take more until the end goal is achieved.
Â
Find something else to worry about. Like your tax liability under Heir Obama.
 @Socialjusticeforall Define illegal gun market please ,,, Criminals selling stolen guns dont do back ground checks or run mental evaluations. Gun show venders in this state follow the same laws as gun dealers.Private sellers have no access to federal criminal data bases or mental health records. If you sell your car to an individual do you check to see if they have insurance and a valid driver license. I highly doubt it.

 @Socialjusticeforall "Gun Control" is using BOTH hands.
It is very clear, a known killer with easy access to guns equal more killings of both guilty and innocent people. Society failed this kid who should have been an abortion against the wishes of the pro-life lobby. Society (that is all of us) failed him by not providing a support system to replace a failed home (probably a violent home with drugs and prison history) and the PRO GUN LOBBY failed him by fighting to make sure these punks don't have access to guns.
Â
IT IS CLEAR, A FAILED SOCIETY AND GUNS EQUAL MORE KILLINGS. So, go to your Church today and pray for more children to be born in a society that doesn't care about what happens to these youth once they are born. And when you come back home, make sure to clean your gun and lock it up again, and dream about protecting your children in school or at bars, movie theaters and disco joints.
Â
HAPPY NEW YEAR WITH MORE DEATHS BY GUNS!
 @Socialjusticeforall Are you saying that we should involuntarily abort black Americans? This is a national issue, not a racial one. It's the justice system that failed the people. You should quit voting for judges that turn these scum back on the street.
Â
Someone has been hitting the pipe a little to hard today.....
 @Socialjusticeforall Funny how so many criminals in Chicago and DC (not to mention Great Britain) have access to guns. One would think that banning guns just disarmed the lawful citizen while empowering the criminals.
Â
naw, that couldn't be the case.
 @Iconoclast  @SocialjusticeforallÂ
The UK has an insanely low murder rate, though. For the 12 months from June 2011 to June 2012, England and Wales reported only 545 murders, which is a rate of 1.0 per 100,000 people.
Â
http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/crime-stats/crime-statistics/period-ending-june-2012/stb-crime-in-england-and-wales--year-ending-june-2012.html#tab-Violence
Â
The US rate in 2011 was 4.7.Â
Â
I doubt we could ever get the US rate that low regardless of or gun laws, though - Americans are just a more unruly, murderous, buckwild people in general. That's just part of our national culture.
 @Snoop  @Iconoclast  @SocialjusticeforallÂ
Â
The information you're looking for is in the following paragraph:
Â
"The number of homicides recorded by the police in the year ending June 2012 (545) fell by 14 percent compared with the previous year (632)."
Â
Â
 @Snoop  @Iconoclast  @SocialjusticeforallÂ
Â
Just about every country has a murder rate. The question is, how HIGH is the murder rate? England's rate is about 4.7 times lower than the US. That's what we know. I actually don't care that much about the METHODOLOGY of murder, because murder is murder, and the fact that it gets carried out AT ALL is a problem - not just that some particular murder METHOD was used. Higher murder rates are the sign of a broken culture.
Â
But anyway, the FBI's 2011 report has the information you are looking for:
Â
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/violent-crime/violent-crime
Â
"Information collected regarding type of weapon showed that firearms were used in 67.7 percent of the nationâs murders"
Â
So, out of a rate of 4.7, this implies that the US firearms murder rate was 3.2, and the non-firearms murder rate was 1.5.Â
 @Whobeke  @Iconoclast  @Socialjusticeforall Table 6a Police recorded violence - number and rate of offences England and Wales  Apr-02 to Mar-03 Apr-06 to Mar-07 Jul-10 to Jun-11 Jul-11 to Jun-12 Violence against the person offences 845,078 1,046,167 796,693 747,448     Violence against the person - with injury2 372,124 506,594 356,468 328,642     Violence against the person - without injury3 472,954 539,573 440,225 418,806 Violence against the person rate per 1,000 population 16 20 15 14 Table source: Home Office Table notes: Police recorded crime statistics based on data from all 44 forces in England and Wales (including the British Transport Police).Includes homicide, attempted murder, intentional destruction of viable unborn child, causing death by dangerous driving/careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs, more serious wounding or other act endangering life (including grievous bodily harm with and without intent), causing death by aggravated vehicle taking and less serious wounding offences.Includes threat or conspiracy to murder, harassment, possession of weapons, other offences against children and assault without injury (formerly common assault where there is no injury).For detailed footnotes and further years see Appendix table A4.
 @Whobeke  @Iconoclast  @Socialjusticeforall Why does England have a murder rate at all considering their strict gun laws ?. And how many of those 4.7 in the USA are not gun related. If your going to try making a point please state all the facts ,,, not just the ones you choose.
@Iconoclast @Socialjusticeforall Â
Â
WTH...do rightwingers get the concept of banning guns? In your fried brain you equate gun control with banning guns. No wonder we have daily killings. Keep it up and pray for your children today in Church.Â
Â
How about requiring training and mental fitness tests for gun owners and ALSO GO AFTER THE ILLEGAL GUN MARKET? Stop being so radical, please.
 @Socialjusticeforall So we are not going after the illegal gun market now? Who knew?
Â
As for mental fitness tests for gun owners--sure, as soon as there are mental fitness tests for everyone, such as the lunatics who pushed people off the subway platform in NY. And, maybe, involuntary commitment/medication becomes feasible again.
Â
As for training of gun owners, that really isn't a problem now is it? Maybe you should focus on solving the problem at hand instead of exploiting a crisis.Â
KOMO News Staff: PLEASE correct your error! The Tuba Man's name is Ed McMichael. Several people have pointed this out over the past few weeks and your staff have done nothing. Please have respect for Ed McMichael, his family, and his legacy. Please!  Thank you!  Â
This kid needs life without parole and/or the death penalty. He's already killed once and was out within 3 years. Then he kills again??? Pure evil!
Whoever is hiding him should be charged with "aiding and abetting", such as the Clemmons case. Hiding a killer is a crime in itself.
As far as Munchbar, I think they are pretty much finished.
@Eye4anEye Â
Â
And another youth will take his place in the killings. This kid should have been either an abortion or cared for by our society because he didn't have a chance (his family is broken and we need to assume that responsibility) or, eliminate the EASY ACCESS TO GUNS in our country. Until then, we just keep being hypocritical. NOT EVERY ONE HAS DECENT, RESPONSIBLE PARENTS AND NOT EVERY PARENT DESERVES TO BE A PARENT AND ABORTION COULD BE THE ANSWER IN MANY CASES.
Â
Â
 @Socialjusticeforall Not if you enforce the law and quit voting for hug-a-thug judges who want to "redeem" A&@holes like this....So again, we abort those who are less fortunate...Great Plan...
Can you believe that he was carrying a gun when the "law" prohibited it... How could that happen? The obvious liberal solution "add more laws for the law abiding".Â
 @javajoe The sensible solution is to lower the number of guns in circulation so that the laws have a better chance.Â
 @Citizen#3457899654  @javajoe Oh you mean the laws that let convicted killers back on the streets?
Â
The system is broken obviously.
@javajoeÂ
Â
And the NRA solution is ADD MORE GUNS INTO THE SYSTEM.  WTH... are you thinking?
Â
 @Socialjusticeforall Better than releasing criminal scum terrorist back on the streets...Go ahead, hug-a-thug.....
Time to permantley lock the doors on Munchbar...
Bellevue is getting more and more like Seattle every day. It now has its own upscale version of Jerseys.
What a triumph for Liberalism.
@Attila Transient thuggery.Â
I hope they arrest the people who are helping this killer hide.
Komo... you need to go back and look up "Tuba Man's" name again. It is McMichael, and you have omitted the first two letters of his last name on the last half dozen or so stories that you have referenced him. That is pretty lame considering this was a very BIG LOCAL news story. You are reporting news that people read and believe. Get it right. A half dozen stories you've messed this one up. It is embarrassing.
I wonder how many homicides happened in King county in 2012Â
I do not believe Komo will be winning the Edward R. Murrow Award this year. Again....
@F4I For editing or reporting?
@Throbbinhood Both.
Was there a relation between the shooter and the victim? Why did the fight break out? What was it about? We all seem to missing that point. The victim has also been convicted of crimes both in 2010 and 2011 in Arizona, one of which involved money laundering.
Â
Did he walk into the bar, randomly get in a fight and pull a gun, or was there more to it than that? What was the motive for the shooting?
@Bellevue Scott Yes - FAR too much of the story has yet to be explored. Maybe THOSE questions will arise NEXT week in the media....
Maybe when this POS is caught, the courts will wake up and give him a sentence that will keep him in jail for many years. Maybe life without parole will work as it will be very hard in this state to hand down a death penalty. But the state charged him with 2nd degree murder so the noose or the needle can get put away.
Â
Until the state justice system wakes up and decides to treat criminals like criminals, pukes like Jones will continue to kill, their attorneys will work to get deals, and prosecutors will continue to fail to uphold the law.
yadda yadda yadda  The problem is this POS killed again, not that the bar served some underage patron. Someone knows where he is and is providing aid. I suspect he will be caught and the scumbag defense and weak prosecution/judge will plea bargain him down to a six month sentence with councelling.
C O W A R D!!!!!!!
Take to account BPD and SPD the odds of finding him are slim to none for both these crack police departments...
@Windowseat If you can do better then you find him.  Call in a tip and maybe get $1k from Crime Stoppers.  Otherwise, that is one dumb comment. Both Dept's have done some real good police work to find criminals. If the POS is still around, he will be caught. If he is out of town, please tell them where to find him.Â
