Seattle set a record high temperature for the date Sunday, hours before a heat advisory was due to expire for the Puget Sound region, the National Weather Service says.

The mercury hit 93 degrees at Sea-Tac International Airport on Sunday, shattering the old record for the date of 89 degrees, set in 1977.

That equalled the maximum temperature from the day before, making Saturday and Sunday the hottest days since 2010.

Other cities in the Western Washington also recorded high temperatures again on Sunday, in the final hours of a two-day heat wave. The mercury hit 92 degrees in Bellevue, 91 at the Tacoma Narrows and 94 at Olympia.

Other high temperatures on Saturday weren't as impressive. The thermometer hit 88 in Shelton, 87 in Everett, 82 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and 84 at Port Angeles.

On the coast, in Quillayute, the high was only 68 degrees - a huge difference from the 95-degree high there on Saturday.

The heat advisory for the Puget Sound region is set to expire at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Temperatures will cool off on Monday, as an onshore flow of marine air resumes. Daytime temperatures are expected to top out mainly in the mid 70s to lower 80s on Monday. Minimum temperatures tonight will also be cooler Sunday night, bringing relief to those without air conditioning.
