Record year for state's only nuclear plant

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) - The operator of the only nuclear power plant in the Northwest says it had a record year in 2012, producing more electricity than ever before in the 28-year history of the Columbia Generating Station at Richland.
Energy Northwest says the plant ran continuously, except for 10 days of maintenance in May, and generated 9.34 million megawatts for the regional grid.
The nuclear plant accounts for nearly 10 percent of the electricity generated in Washington, enough to power Seattle.
Energy Northwest says the Columbia Generating Station has remained online for more than three years without any unplanned outage.

Lame! Â Radiation is killing this nation. Look into Fukushima fallout. Â It's still happening. Â Rad levels are high all over the place. Â
Solar panels are $1.05 a watt. Â
Heard on the news today, people are complaining about Composting Plants, and their smells. Â Methane! Â Large cattle ranchers make $250-300K a year on cattle poop powering generators, creating electricity. Â Why don't they use the compost as biofuel. Â
This nation has to be among the most ignorant. Â
I pray for my country.

Right and how many nasty chemicals are in solar panels? Look it up. And a lot of them are being made in China unregulated exposing employees to all of the nasty chemicals it takes to make them. Maybe do a little MORE research before spouting off such asinine comments.
@Hueski *sigh* It's alarmists like you that keep us from being able to provide the necessary energy to our citizens. Nuclear energy is and can be safe, as long as you don't stupidly build A) in the middle of a residential area and B) in a safe location not affected by earthquakes or tsunamis. It's Japan's fault for allowing that plant to be built there...
Â
But anyway, go back to your bunker and stop the madness.
@BluefireJaguar  @Hueski Actually, when they built that power plant they had no evidence that tsunamis could get that high. It was only in around 2000 that they discovered evidence of a tsunami going higher and that particular tsunami came from an earthquake over here in 1700.I suppose after that discovery they could have moved it uphill some.
@BluefireJaguar Sorry dudeski... I don't throw out BS without researching first.  Sounds like you need to.  There is no reason for Nuke Power with the tech we have now.  Especially Biofuel, which most European countries are looking into seriously.
Personally, I wouldn't mind being paid by having a system where it uses my crap to power a generator to create electricity. Â
Condemnation without investigation, is the height of ignorance. - Albert Einstein. Â
If Nuke Power is needed, Thorium should be used, which allows more yield. Â It however, can't be used as a bomb. Â Â

@Hueski  @BluefireJaguar The best reason for nuclear energy is how few people it kills per year compared to EVERY OTHER POWER SOURCE EVER. Also the fact that it can work night and day, unlike solar, during non-windy periods, unlike wind, and the fact that it makes a huge amount of power while taking up relatively little space.Did you know that nuclear has taken up nearly all the slack in the country's power generation needs in the past 25 years? And there hasn't been a single incident in that period of time?
Mr Burns and Homer would be proud of Energy Northwest
