Rifle stolen from marked Ore. State Police car
LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the theft of a semi-automatic rifle from a marked Oregon State Police car.
The Observer newspaper reports the theft occurred last week in the Eastern Oregon city of La Grande.
The car was parked at the home of a trooper when someone smashed a window and took the firearm that had been in a mounted locked bracket.
State and La Grande police investigated the theft, and a team from the OSP Crime Lab in Pendleton assisted.
La Grande police Sgt. Gary Bell says it's extremely rare for a marked police vehicle to be the target of a break-in.

Maybe it will show up at the next gun buyback program... :eyeroll:Â
Boldness paid off.
QUICK BAN COPS FROM HAVING GUNS SO THEY DON'T GET IN THE HANDS OF CRIMINALS!! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!!!!
(sarcasm off)
Wasn't there a report just the other day by the police telling us that it was the "General Publics'" fault for suppling guns to gangs by NOT SECURING THEM PROPERLY???
With the way the gun nuts have flocked to assault rifles, this is like displaying a gold bar in your car window. Not very smart on the part of the cop.Â
@lakeviewI guess there were no assault rifle thefts from cops during the ban were there? Oops, history/logic fail.Â
@NW-Economist @lakeview Yeah, cause I'm sure it was your average every day gun owner that stole this rifle. Lakeview is really stretching, as usual, to try to find anything to back up his ridiculous posts.....
wow. I'm surprised police policy allows an assult rifle to be left in an unoccupied car. shouldn't they be kept indoors in a gun safe?
@dorimonsonfan That's only for civilians.
@DarkParty @dorimonsonfan Remember, "Do as I say, not as I do".....safety and laws concerning such are only for the proletariat......
Interesting how the need to obtain weapons by criminals has gotten to the point they need to steal them from the police..Â
@Mr. H May be it could be an easy mark
Was this a "registered" theft? I hear that's how ALL the law abiding criminals get their guns these days. :)
Does this mean there is a job opening in the La Grande State Police for the loss of the so called Assault Rifle.There should BE. That same thing happened In Seattle but it was the Police Chief and it was only a 9mm. He is back in DC doing something for Obama either guns or drugs I can't remember.Â
Don't forget about the SPD officer that drove down the street with an AR on the trunk lid of the car...
@SV1G That what happens when you get old, I forgot thanks
yes, if you or I have this type of firearm it is an "assault rifle" if law enforcement then its a semi-automatic rifle.... vehicle prowls on the rise... the mounts in patrol cars make the rifles very visible and accesible. yes it was locked. and a compentent thief probably took 10 seconds to unsecure it. (watch how long it takes to remove "the club" from a steering wheel on you-tube)  the problem is not with guns, it's with criminals.
@my opinion only Politicians, and anti-gun advocates love the fact that the
civilian semiautomatic looks enough like the military assault rifle that theyÂ
then feel that because it looks like an assault rifle so they simply call them
assault rifles.
Functionally, they are not the same.
Wow, so I guess if we had banned guns this criminal, who stole one from a POLICE OFFICER, would be one of the "few" with a gun, and all you anti-firearm people want that???
@NW-Economist BTW, why not get rid of your door locks, they don't stop criminals every time either. I mean come on, why don't you LIVE by your "logic?"
@the tide @NW-EconomistLast time I looked I didn't see a specific right to have door locks or travel whatever speed you want spelled out specifically in the constitution the way the 2nd Amendment is written.Â
@NW-Economist Gee brains, there are lot's of people speeding. Shall we get rid of speed limits? I mean golly if we want to think like idiots we could point out that speed limits don't work EVERY single time....
Even more reason for the police to voluntary stop carry standard capacity magazines and limit them to 10 or better yet 7 round max.  Cause these guns are falling into the wrong hands.  I'm sure the thief will also fill out his background check, its probably in the mail.  We should also remove the gun permits from the police department as they allowed guns into the wrong hands.
So let me get this straight, It is not Assault weapons if it is a cops semi-automatic rifle?
@DarkParty I was more surprised that it was NOT a full auto ...
@Komo Dragon @DarkParty If it was a Colt It could have been and they don't want you to know
@DarkParty @Mike @Komo Dragon SHSHSH
@Mike @Komo Dragon Kinda funny how they say semi auto, Not being a colt owner I was not sure. Then I looked it up

@Mike@Komo Dragon It was a Colt 16A1
@DarkParty And not just that, it's likely a "select fire" version, just like the 7000 "personal defense weapons" the DHS recently purchased.
@fubar @DarkParty If the article got it right (unlikely), it was a semi-automatic rifle, which would not have select fire.
@DarkParty LOL! I missed that entirely.
It is the AP, so bias is added for free.
@DarkParty You caught that too!  You gotta LOVE the way the press changes the wording based on the situation.  Nooooo BIAS at ALL! ;)  Â
