SDOT: Snow storm response cost city $1.35 million
SEATTLE -- Last week's storm cost the city of Seattle $1.35 million -- more than half of its annual budget of $2.2 million for snow response, the Seattle Department of Transportation said.
SDOT briefed the Seattle City Council on the cost of the snow storm on Tuesday.
SDOT spokesman Steve Pratt said the city used 55,353 gallons of liquid salt brine at $0.76 per gallon, as well as 3,372 tons of street salt at $100 a ton.
The remainder of the estimated total covered labor and equipment expenses, according to SDOT. The department hired contractors to help crews plow the streets, Pratt said, and also borrowed additional vehicles from other city departments.
Pratt said if the department depletes the $2.2 million budget before the year's end, it will have to ask the Seattle City Council to dip into the reserves budget.
