School bus crashes in Kent, no injuries

KENT, Wash. -- No one was injured when a school bus slid off the road and crashed into a ditch on Tuesday morning.
The bus, which was headed north on 124th Avenue SE, tried to take a left turn onto SE 270th Street when it lost control around 9:10 a.m.
Police believe icy roads were a contributing factor.
Thirty four children were on the bus at the time.
The crash triggered a traffic backup, police said.

You know that now we can get to know who drives our children to school, we can read other parenst comments and the score given to your driver at www.ratemybusdriver.com
From the accompanying photos it would seem the bus just slowly slid over the curb and stuck a front tire in the soft ground by that fence. I see no sign of excess speed, other than when the bus attempted to make the slight turn it went straight ahead. Most of us have done that at some time. The funny picture was the children made to exit the emergency door when it would have been much simpler to just exit the front door which has steps. Â
I wonder how many out of the 34 children parents are going to sue. Someone on the bus is going to be hurt and have nightmares and mommy and daddy are going to want a fast payday.Â
Only in Kent...
@AdAckbar What the hell is that supposed to mean? A school bus crash due to icy roads can only happen in Kent? Really?
Maybe an off duty drunk SPD officer went for a joyride in a bus.Â
Probably going too fast for the road conditions and hit a patch of ice.
There was an incident at Military Road and 272nd where a bus missed a right turn and apparently skidded into a pole. I took I-5 from Kent-Des Moines Road all the way down to 38th and then back to 272nd this morning and passed 14 vehicles that had been damaged in spin-outs and crashes, including the bus.
I left for work at 6am and had no problems with the roads going in to Seattle. I can see the roads icing up at sunrise when it gets colder.
Looking at the curb and the snow on it me thinks the driver was not allowing for slippery conditions and driving too fast for them. Black ice can form anywhere and you have no control once your on it.
@LongBeachBum It is interesting how they wrote the article. How they say the bus lost control and icy roads may have been a contributing factor. it was the driver who lost control. No mention of speeds to fast for conditions. You have the lives of 34 children in your hands. Then in another article about the 80 yo who was hit in Federal Way they did not mention she was not in a crosswalk....but mention nothing indicates the driver was under drugs or alcohol...how about the lady was crossing illegally.
I Was surprised they did not delay 2 hrs in Kent, Federal Way etc. I saw a Fed Way bus to the side of road with car in ditch. Not sure if bus was involved.. Did not stop no student present and drivers seemed ok. Fire Chief had just arrived.

The conditions this morning in south King County were horrendous; just a lawyer of ice on all the roads and I woke up to plenty of tires screeching as they tried to get up my hill. Glad no one was hurt but also surprised there wasn't a 2 hour delay.Â
@windtreeman I'm sure it was just a typo but it made me laugh: "a lawyer of ice"!
@katiemcc  @windtreeman HA, whoops! Glad my spell correction skills are as adept as Komo's editors.Â
