Seattle Times editor named Temple journalism dean

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Temple University said Thursday that the executive editor of The Seattle Times has been hired to lead its School of Media and Communication.

The Philadelphia university said David Boardman will begin work in September, taking over from Thomas Jacobson, who has been interim dean since 2009.

Boardman called the job "one of the best in media and communication education" and said he shares the school's values of "public service, social justice and the essential role of communication in our democracy."

Boardman has worked at the newspaper since 1983 and was recently elected president of the American Society of News Editors. He's a graduate of Northwestern University's journalism school and has a graduate degree from the University of Washington.

The Temple program has more than 3,000 students and departments in advertising, journalism, media studies and production and strategic communications.
