Seattle will test less-frequent garbage service
SEATTLE (AP) - The city of Seattle is moving forward with a plan to test every-other-week trash collection as a way to reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfills.
The City Council unanimously approved a six-month pilot project on Monday. The city will test the concept in 800 households in coming months.
If the pilot project is successful, every-other-week trash collection could be rolled out citywide.
City officials say less-frequent garbage service would reduce truck traffic through neighborhoods by 20 percent and save about $6 million a year. Some residents have worried about odor and other problems.
Most major U.S. cities collect trash from homes every week. Portland, Ore., began less-frequent garbage collection last fall. In Washington, Renton and Olympia have made the switch.
