Sheriff: Heroes stepped up during deadly mall shooting

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said there were many who jumped into action to help Tuesday afternoon when a lone gunman opened fire in a crowded mall, killing two and seriously injuring another.
The shooter then took his own life by apparently shooting himself, police said.
"We had some true heroes stepping up," Roberts said during a news conference nearly five hours after the first shots were reported at the Clackamas Town Center at about 3:30 p.m.
Some emergency room nurses and a physician were at the mall when the gunfire erupted, and they immediately went to work to provide care to the wounded, he said. Others, including everyday citizens, also worked to help get the 10,000 people out of the mall.
"We have a young lady at the hospital fighting for her life right now," Roberts said about the seriously injured victim who was taken to the hospital. She was listed in serious condition Tuesday night.
Roberts did not offer specifics about individuals who provided on-scene help.
"The mall is supposed to be a place that we can all take our families. ... These things aren't supposed to happen," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families."
While police say they believe the gunman killed himself and no law enforcement officers fired a shot, Roberts said responding officers handled the situation admirably.
"I'm really proud of all the different agencies that came together to really step up and put their lives on the line," he said, adding that there were law enforcement officers at the mall minutes after the first reports of shots.
Four SWAT teams were quickly deployed, "basically to hunt down this guy in the mall," Roberts said.
At the height of the terror, over 100 officers from nearly every government agency – from the city to the federal levels – responded.
Now in the aftermath, the focus for police turns to the investigation. The job for investigators is to sort through the speculation to find the facts. It will be complicated due in part to the size of the crime scene – a mall which is about 1.4 million square feet.
Clackamas County Sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Phillips said investigators will work to sift through dozens of interviews with witnesses to create the most complete picture as possible as to what happened.
"There is a lot of speculation going on about what happened (and) what the circumstances were," he said. "Active shooter situations and tense situations like this get perceived many ways. ... We as law enforcement officers – our job is to collect all that information and make it into a cohesive idea of what actually occurred."
Police have tentatively identified the shooter, an adult male, but Phillips said they would not release his name until they were 100-percent sure of his identity.
Police also have not released the names of the victims, pending family notifications.
Because the investigation is in its infancy, Phillips said he could not delve into what type of weapon the shooter used or how many shots were fired.
"We're (the sheriff's office) are going to report on what we actually know, not speculation," he said.
He said the belongings that were left behind by mall patrons are secure, and the sheriff's office and Clackamas Town Center officials will set up a process on how they can be retrieved. He urged patience, however, because other aspects of the tragedy are of higher priority.
Phillips encouraged those who were witnesses and had not been interviewed to contact the sheriff's office at 503-655-8211. Or they can go to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office website for more information.
Teams were still searching every inch of the mall late Tuesday night to ensure everyone is out and that the mall is safe. The mall will remain closed through Wednesday, police said.
This was a so-called "gun-free zone". Signs are posted for all law abiding citizens to dutifully obey and for criminals to lick their chops over. I'm sure the shooting victims in the mall felt very secure there were no law abiding citizens carrying guns in the mall, well at least right up until the moment they needed one more than anything they have ever needed in their lives. We are constantly being told the police will be there to save us but they almost never are. They put on a good show but all the firepower in the world is worthless when it arrives too late. The person who has the best chance to intervene and take down these vermin before they can kill is the guy who is standing there at the first moment. The problem is....he obeyed the sign.
@Razor I am a legal gun owner and carrier and I ignore those signs for this exact reason. Yes, I may be braking the facilities rules/regulations, law... whatever. But I have the right to defend myself in this situation.
It hasn't been so many years since the Tacoma Mall shootings by another demented young gunman. At least this shooter had the sense to take his own life before he could continue taking others.
Great work by all of those heroic people who helped in this terrible incident. Thanks to the fire and police who responded into this event.Â
This happened yesterday so who cares? This is called KOMO "News" now KOMO "Olds."
who cares..??!! what a dumb azz thing to say...i can think of hundreds at that mall yesterday who 'cared'...comments like yours make my blood boil...get a clue....your name fits...
@bartle_doo Ignore and move on. All he/she does here is troll.
Another day of terror from a lunatic able to get a gun and go on a rampage. Where were all the 2nd amendment NRA card carrying citizens I keep hearing about to take this dude out? Maybe he was drunk and that auto shut off device would have helped.Â
Â
How much longer do we have to be victims to this kind of crap on a what seems to be a daily occurence.
  Â
@NoKitty666 Well lets see. Malls, schools, theaters etc are typically "no gun" zones. So those "NRA card carrying citizens" are likely obeying laws/rules and not carrying in those places. Additionally, people who carry primarily carry for defense and recognize that while they can do something about a shooter its not always possible, say for instance when you don't have your firearm because the management posted the building as a no gun zone.Â
As long as there are bad people there will be bad things happening.
@SeattleJoe - I will agree with your comment, however, we can't just sit and say 'life's a b____' and continue to go on as if nothing's changed time and time again when people do this.  I don't pretend to know what the answer to help stop this kind of thing would be - and I'm certainly not advocating taking limiting guns from law abiding people. However, sitting back and just accepting that 'tragedies happen' isn't an acceptable answer.
@NoKitty666 How to people make it out of gun shows alive with all these dangerous killer guns.
Â
For every moron that pulls something like this there are thousands of responsible gun owners that you never hear about.
@Hachee_Bungwhy - AT NO POINT did NoKitty blame the gun.
Â
You pro-gun folks need to stop the knee jerk reaction of assuming that someone who dares speak out against gun violence is always stupid enough to blame the gun. Because RARELY does the commentor actually blame the gun.
Â
What NoKitty and I both agree on is that people who have easy access to guns cause this kind of tragedy. If you can't tell the difference between than and blindly blaming guns, then you've become a victim of your own extreme rhetoric.
Â
I am a gun owner, I have a concealed carry permit, I respect the second amendment and I'm damm tired of hearing about tragedies caused by people with guns - AND I'm even more tired of the blind rhetoric that always comes from BOTH sides whenever something like this happens.
Â
Yeah - it wasn't the gun itself that caused it. However, if this guy didn't have a gun, there's a couple of people who would still be alive today, and a bunch of injured folks that wouldn't be.
Â
And nobody go for the even dumber arguement that 'if he didn't have a gun he would have used _______'.  There's no way you can say that with any honesty because we don't know what he would have done without a gun (being that he's dead - he can't be asked. maybe he would have, maybe he wouldn't have. Killing with your bare hands is quite personal, killing at a distance with a gun is not - that can make quite a difference).  Also, if he had of used a knife/sword/tire iron/his hands/etc., people would have stopped him, most likely before he killed anyone. Â
Â
Â
Â
- I'd like to add one more comment to prevent confusion:
Â
I am not advocating taking guns away from law abiding citizens. However - I know that I don't know what the right answer here is. There is a need for action to prevent these kinds of gun involved tragedies - as well as the all too common 'kid killed or injured by unsecured guns (usually owned by thier parent) that they found and played with' (btw - two more of those nationally just in the last few days). Â
Â
We need to figure out what the right thing to do here is. Leaving it as the 'status quo' where this happens all too damm frequently that we have today is just not acceptable.
Â
Â
Â
Southcenter Mall, Tacoma Mall, Clackamas Mall....  If you "carry" anywhere it should be in a Mall.
I hope they don't release the shooter's name. Too many crazies want to become famous this way.
@makeadifference At least he won't be around to enjoy his "fame."Â
This is sad, but the every day life gets to be too much for some people during the Holidays. Too bad he didn't have someone to talk to, instead of ending it this way.
@DDG That's admirable, but I have a hard time finding sympathy for someone who chooses to kill other people (I am only talking about criminals here, not people whose profession may require it). He has ruined lives and caused so much damage. At least now he can't cause anymore heartache to innocent people.
