SEATTLE – The crew aboard a fish processing ship docked at pier 91 had to evacuate early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in the galley area of that ship.
Kyle Moore with Seattle Fire says crews were called to the 167 foot vessel around 3:00 a.m. Once they were aboard they found the fire burning two decks below the main deck behind a commercial grade stove.
Moore says the fire had burned into a bulkhead and was tough to fight, though it was eventually extinguished.
24 crew members were evacuated from the ship. No one was injured. But carbon monoxide levels were high making it initially dangerous for those crew members to return to their quarters.
Fire investigators determined the fire was likely ignited by an accumulation of grease and debris between the back of the stove and a wood frame wall.
The damage estimate is about $35,000.
