SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. (AP) - The King County Sheriff's Office says a backcountry skier has been injured in an avalanche near the Snow Lake area of Snoqualmie Pass.

Initial reports show the skier suffers from a broken leg and hip, as well as hypothermia.

Search and rescue crews located the injured skier, but were unable to launch a helicopter rescue mission as weather conditions were poor.

Late Sunday afternoon, a team of rescuers were headed into the backcountry to bring the injured skier down the mountain, and say the rescue mission could take all night.

The avalanche was reported near Alpental, which includes expert backcountry terrain and is part of The Summit at Snoqualmie, a ski area east of Seattle.
