Police find Ore. boy kidnapped during hammer attack

THE DALLES, Ore. -- Police have found a 5-year-old boy who was kidnapped during a break-in early Wednesday.
The boy was found safe about 8:30 a.m. and the suspect was taken into custody.
Officials said 36-year-old Brian DePriest broke into a home in The Dalles about 5:40 a.m. and attacked two adults with a hammer. He then grabbed Skylar Coulcer-Jarding and ran to a stolen car he had waiting nearby, police said.
DePriest is from the area and knows the boy's mother, but it was not clear what prompted the attack and no information about the other victims was immediately available.
DePriest drove off and officials issued an Amber Alert for the missing boy. The alert was canceled after Skylar was found.

BAN THE ASSAULT HAMMER!!!!Â
I am only speculating but perhaps the man just found out the child is actually his and felt he was taking him whether he felt the child was in danger or just because he's nuts.
Was this guy a perv or something? The story doesn't make sense.
It starts to sound a bit like Joseph Duncan.........

 @freespeech:Â
It's called "Lazy Eye". My God Daughter also has this, and it can be improved & correctged with glasses.
Â
Here is information from the US National Library of Medicine -0 perhaps you'll lkearn something (sorry, they do not have a "cure" for tactlessness).
Â
Amblyopia, or "lazy eye," is the loss of one eye's ability to see details. It is the most common cause of vision problems in children.
Â
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Â
Amblyopia occurs when the nerve pathway from one eye to the brain does not develop during childhood. This occurs because the abnormal eye sends a blurred image or the wrong image to the brain.
Â
This confuses the brain, and the brain may learn to ignore the image from the weaker eye.
Strabismus is the most common cause of amblyopia. There is often a family history of this condition.
Â
The term "lazy eye" refers to amblyopia, which often occurs along with strabismus. However, amblyopia can occur without strabismus and people can have strabismus without amblyopia.
Other causes include:
Â
Childhood cataracts
Farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism, especially if it is greater in one eye
Â
Symptoms
Â
Eyes that turn in or out
Eyes that do not appear to work together
Inability to judge depth correctly
Poor vision in one eye

@LocalLady @freespeech: I was born with "lazy eye" and could see perfectly. I had it corrected when I was about this boys age, and then recorrected when I was about 7 years old because the 1st surgery took the eye which was inward- and "fixed" it too far outward...
Although some people don't notice it now, if I am tired or have a had a few drinks- it's noticable even now, as an adult. (40) However, because I see fine out of it, I would like to have it corrected again, but insurance now calls it "cosmetic" surgery. Perhaps this boys Dr was waiting unril he was a bit older, or maybe the insurance wouldn't pay for it to be fixed at all.
 @LocalLady  @freespeech: Well, I'm the poster child for all of the above. One of the key things is getting a GOOD eye doctor. I was in my 20's before I finally found a Dr. that had a clue and told me about my condition. I've gone on to find a Dr. that is even better and just this last year have improved my eyesight considerably. I hope they not only get the little guy some counseling etc to help him through this ordeal but also a good eye doc. It will help him considerably in the years to come.
 @Freespeech Thank god you won't be caring for this child.Â
 @Freespeech Classy.
I am so glad he was found safe. That poor little guy! What a hell of thing to have to go through.
Oh, that poor little boy life is turned upside down. I hope whoever raises this child is able to help him get through this. This may be a long road for them. I will keep you in my prayers.
Really glad to hear the boy was found safe.
Â
On a sidenote, I wonder when our government will start regulating hammers. Maybe we'll all be forced to only own hammers with a less than 6 inch handle and smaller than a 1 inch metal face. After all, anything bigger is just outrageous and serves no purpose.Â
Â
/sarcasm
 @PuyallupCoug Ever heard of the phrase "beating a dead horse?"
 @jowsuf  @PuyallupCoug with a hammer?
Hmm. Something tells me there is more to this story we haven't heard yet. Even if the guy knew the family, if he wasn't related in any way to the kid why would he attack the adults then take the kid? It makes no sense.
 @dg54321 It might make a little more sense once they report who were the adults in the house.
I heard the Amber alert on the way to work this morning on KOMO 1000 and the story behind it. Great to hear the boy was found safe and the dirt-bag taken into custody.
Geez, that poor kid. Â Thank god he's still alive and okay.
Never take a hammer to a gun fight.Â
When guns are outlawed, outlaws will still have guns... and hammers....
Â
Assuming this household has a fireextinguisher, a shovel, a few days supplies of food and water... why aren't they prepared also to defend themselves:Â why don't they have a firearm?
Â
Â
 @newspuppy:Â
Is there some mandatory requirement for households to have a gun? If so, I would be in violation of it. I refuse to have a gun in the house, for my own personal reasons.Â
Â
Since "gun advocates" say they need to be "safely stored" (ie: with a trigger lock, in a gun safe), if they are stored how will they ne able to use it to repel an intruder?Â
Â
And if it is NOT "safe;y stored" then it opens things up to a whole other set of circumstances. The majority of guns used in croimes are STOLEN.Â
Â
Just yesterday on the news, the Thurston County Sherriff gave some statistics: Thurston County had 160 break-ins in 2012 - and 107 fire arms stolen during the course of those break-ins. So much for "the majority of gun owners responsibly store their weapons". That means 107 more weapons out on the streets.
Â
People like you say "an armed society os a polite society". Well, look at all the arms the criminals have - and they sure as hell do not make it a "polite society".
@LocalLady @newspuppy: People like me say.... huh? I never said that, and you are showing your prejudice and ignorance.
Â
Don't want a gun, and don't want the responsibility of owning one, then don't. Make that decision for yourself, not for others.
Â
Safely stored is not that difficult.  Safely stored can be on my person. Â
Â
Guns are a useful survival tool. As are fire extinguishers, shovels, axes, hammers. All of which can be misused and abused.Â
Â
State Patrol wont let you cross the mountain passes in winter unless you have a certain kind of tire &/or chains. Why, becuase if you aren't properly equipped, someone else has to save your sorry self; maybe risking their own hide to do so.
Â
Be prepared for whatever life may throw at you. Be capable of taking care of yourself, and maybe being a rescuer instead of one needing rescued.
 @newspuppyÂ
Your original post implied that if they had only had a gun they would have shot the bad guy & all would be well. This happened at 5:30am - they were most likely sleeping, taken co mpletely byu surprise. You say "safely stored" could be on a person - true,. but hoew many people SLEEP with their weapons outside of the military in war zones.
Â
I am NOT trying to be ignorant; I grew up around guns, learned how to shoot & safely handle them years ago. But ist is SO frustrating at this time in this country to try to have any sort of discussion about REASONABLE COMPROMISES to try to reverse the ever increasing amount of gun violence. The "gun advocates" seem to think EVERYONE should be armed at all times, and they refuse to even consider such things as 100% background checks & penalties for not storing the weapon properly & securely and having it be stolen and later used in the commission of a crime.
Â
Yes,m you have a Second Amendment Right - but with rights come responsibilities. As I noted in myt previois post, over 100 weapons stoeln last year in Thurston County alone. So they probably were NOT safely & securly stored.
Â
I AM prepared for whatever llife may throw at me. I just do not see a firearm as the end-all, be-all answre to every situation.
A firearm seem to be the answer to all your problems.
@mstipton  can you not acknowledge that at least sometimes a firearm is just the thing that is needed?
 @mstipton Would have been here.... HTH
This kid resembles that kyron harmon that was snatched from his school a couple years ago. Wonder if there is a connection?
 @Harrison That's who I thought it was. I had to read the story twice to convince myself it was unrelated. Weird.
 @Harrison I doubt it unless this guy has some connection to Kyron's stepmother.
That who I first thought it was.
