Spokane gets OK to reopen police academy

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The Spokane Police Department is making plans to reopen its police training academy after gaining state accreditation.

When the Spokane training center reopens it will be the first time in more than five years that incoming officers can train somewhere other than Burien

The accreditation is given by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.

The Spokesman-Review reports it is based on more than 100 criteria, from records management to internal affairs investigations and use of force.

Mayor David Condon says this third-party validation shows the Spokane Police Department is moving in the right direction. Others say it's a major step toward changing the culture within the department.
