Spokane police: Good Samaritan saved deputies' lives

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Police are crediting an unidentified good Samaritan with helping save the lives of the two deputies who were shot Tuesday afternoon in North Spokane.
A woman witnessed the two deputies as they were shot and fell to the ground near the intersection of Newport Highway and Elm and ran over to render first aid.
One of the deputies suffered a gunshot wound that went through but the second deputy, who has not been identified yet, suffered a more serious injury. That deputy had a bullet hit him in the pelvis, which they deflected and shattered his femur.
The bullet tore the deputy's femoral artery and he likely could have bled out, officers say, if the woman hadn't been there to render aid. Using her body weight, she applied direct pressure to the man's wounds, and continued to provide him aid until paramedics arrived at the scene to relieve her and take over care of the two deputies.
The woman, officers said Wednesday, is extremely angry because she pleaded with other passersby to stop and help her render aid to the deputies but no one would stop for some time.
