State rebuts Obama plan to allow old health insurance policies

SEATTLE (AP) - Washington state's insurance commissioner says President Barack Obama's proposal on old insurance policies isn't a good deal for Washington citizens.
Commissioner Mike Kreidler said Thursday he won't allow insurance companies to extend their old policies that didn't meet the requirements of federal health care reform. An estimated 290,000 Washington residents have received notices that their old insurance policies will be canceled.
"Trying to do what the president has proposed would be very disruptive to the insurance market in the sate of Washington so no, we will not be allowing insurance companies to extend these policies," he said. "You'd have to go back and re-rate all of the policies, and the premises for what they originally proposed rates would all change."
Kreidler, a Democrat, says all of them can get better coverage on the new health care exchange. He says at least half of them will qualify for a subsidy to help them pay the premium.
"I have empathy for these people, I certainly feel for them, but at the same time, people really have a chance right now to shop and compare various health plans and make some decisions that best fits themselves and their families in ways that could never do before," Kreidler said. "But if you wind up extending these current plans that are out there, you really disrupt the ability for that to happen."
When asked if he was worried his decision was going to upset those who just heard earlier in the day they could keep their insurance, Kreidler replied that having the new policies that meet minimum coverage requirements will be beneficial to them in case of a major health incident.
"They have so much broader coverage that really protects themselves and their families in ways that their current policies do not. They're still going to be winners," he said."
The president announced earlier in the day he would allow insurance companies to keep selling their old plans to people whose policies were going to be cancelled. But that decision requires state approval.
"I do not believe his proposal is a good deal for the state of Washington," Kreidler said.
He is encouraging Washington citizens who have received a cancellation notice to check out the plans on the Washington Healthplanfinder.
"For many of those people, they find there's a better deal out there for themselves or their families," he said.
Health care reform has improved insurance coverage by requiring insurers to cover prescription drugs, maternity care and set reasonable limits on out-of-pocket costs, said Kreidler, who called the improvements significant and good for consumers.
Between Oct. 1 and Nov. 7, more than 9,000 people have selected a private health insurance plan through the marketplace in Washington state. Another 68,532 found out they were eligible for free insurance under Medicaid. And another 81,166 have completed applications for insurance, but have not finished the sign up process.

Health care has become such a well discussed topic over the last few years. With all the changes that are going on it can be hard to understand what will really be changed. I have ask a friend of mine who is in the insurance business and he has to take a while to explain the answers to my questions.

My husband and I are not to happy about this social health care. We've been working for years to get to a place where we can have a great health care provider, and this might ruin that dream. I hoping it doesn't go through because I don't want socialized medicine.

I think, this will be really great software! Thanks for for a great social arrangement. I expect such awesome update more.

I have been trying for over a month to move my lost single payer policy to a new one, as of right now I have no insurance coverage . I am totally healthy and am going to be paying  near $800.00 a monthâ¦. I am trying to be covered but am being jerked aroundâ¦I paid faithfully for 30 some yrs and lost individual coverageâ¦got new coverage lost it again because of Obama careâ¦was suppose to be moved right over to new policyâ¦I am totally healthy by the way⦠My husband worked until he was full retirement age to take social security , is self employed  and planned wisely⦠but he continues to work so not to drain what he has put away⦠he is 73 yrs  old and I am 13 yrs younger. I think they are banking on me getting ill or injured so they can bankrupt us !  This is so messed up it is crazy⦠I paid into dental for a yr so I could be covered for crowns, a year would be this monthâ¦now I have to start all over again if I ever do receive coverage⦠this is so sad , I have never so disliked what our Country is becoming â¦..Working hard ,planning well  saving & being honest does not pay off in the USA anymore⦠I will remain the same person but I am not proud of my country anymore...
Make sure anyone opposed to this go to the Insurance Commissioners Facebook page and let them know what you think! I think he's in his last term, lets get enough of us together to help him with his legacy by getting him recalled?
I knew a guy who never had 2 nickels to rub together and liked it just fine. He always took his kids to the emergency room whenever they were sick. Why would he now pay for something he always got free? The answer is, he won't have to. And anyone on welfare will never have to cough up one of their own dimes to pay for health insurance. The handout system is just another example of socialism, and socialism is partial communism. Forget about the problems with the website. That's just a smokescreen for people for the government, not the other way around.
I hope that this doesn't extend as far as auto insurance in Oakville. http://www.spriggs.ca
I still say SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on the news media ( and republicants who want to kill ACA because they didn't think of it) for making a big issue out of the website problems. The launch of any site this big and with such expected volume is going to have problems. The effing coverage doesn't even start till Jan and deadline to signup is in March so take a breath (in other words shut your noise holes) and report back at the end of December.
The legislation introduced by the juvenile republican house cracks me up on this whole thing. Something like, make it possible not only for people to keep their current health care but also for anyone to buy the old health care plans. It's like LOL LOL! They remind me of bratty little kids, always trying to cause trouble and get attention. I really don't get the point of wasting taxpayer money with pointless political legislation that will never pass, even it if it humorous.Â
It's okay folks. Obama told us yesterday he didn't know anything about this or that the website wouldn't work. Nope, nobody told him anything. So everything is okay now.
It's actually quite simple. If you like you new healthcare mandate, vote Democrat. If you don't, vote Republican.
Remember, it was our very on states Patti Murray whom cast the deciding vote forcing ObamaCare mandates on our states citizens.
Terry
Sounds Mike is practicing his Obama, "I know what's best for you" imitation.
"I have empathy for these people"
 Does this moron know the difference between empathy and sympathy? He feels what we feel? No he doesn't. His $650/mo policy isn't going to $820 a month like mine, he gets his free.
Wait a minute, how does the WA state insurance commission determined so quickly that allowing the extension would be bad? The worse case is the insurance companies offers the extension at very high premium. In which case it is no worse than not having the extension.
Under What authority is Our LIAR President OBAMA Reversing his LIES NOW!!!
Insurance companies cannot sell policies that are illegal under ObamaCare!
Remember Ted Cruz's in The House, a Battle to delay ObamaCare??
OBAMA STATED:
Obama STATED - ObamaCare = the Law of the Land!
Obama STATED - ObamaCare = Passed by 100 Percent of Democrat Controlled Congress and Signed into Law by Democrat President Obama.
Democrats OWN ObamaCare 100 Percent!
Democrats knew you would loose your health Plan!
NOW, democrats want to delay your losing your health policy until after the election like the employer group heath plans!
Obama STATED - ObamaCare = Upheld by the Supreme Court!
NOW, here we go again:
Here comes LIAR President (USA CEO) Obama again... Changing the LAW????
Obama = Liar! LIAR! Pants on FIRE!
The STATE knows what is best for you comrade.
Oh, look... another glitch. What will the world's greatest community agitator do now?
Change the law?
Yesterday's announced "fix" is nothing more than a desperate, failed measure by a desperate, failed democrat party led by a desperate, failed White House occupant.
.
Insurance companies cannot sell policies that are illegal under ObamaCare!
Remember Ted Cruz's Battle to delay ObamaCare???:
ObamaCare is as Obama Stated:
Obama STATED - ObamaCare = The Law of The Land!
Obama Stated - ObamaCare = Passed by 100 Percent of Democrat Controlled Congress and Signed into Law by "D" President Obama
Obama Stated - ObamaCare = Upheld by the Supreme Court!
NOW:
Here comes LIAR Obama... Changing the LAW????
PEOPLE, WAKE UP!!!
.
Worst president in history. He knows people will never get their policies back. He is trying to get some points back for 2014 democrats up for re election. Good luck. Senate dems will fall. You sealed the deal.
It sounds to me like Kriedler doesn't really give a damn if people have insurance or not. Â I'm glad I didn't vote for him.
Have you see the morons proclaiming to everyone their  an idiot and liberal conformist?Â
They're the ones driving around with the "I (heart symbol) ObamaCare!" bumper sticker.Â
A libertarian proposal for universal health care: http://danfromsquirrelhill.wordpress.com/2013/11/15/my-libertarian-proposal-for-universal-health-care/
I find it funny that everything that Obamacare detractors said would happen, costs rising, people losing coverage etc... that supporters said would not happen... have been happening...
And Obama is saying he is sorry that he lied
Forced compliance. "It's for the greater good."
@David Kaye Didn't you hear on the raido about the government website.
3 guys that worked at different companies. was able to recreate the site and fix all the issues. based on the code they could get from the government site. And then redistributed the link to many people. now with the millions they spent trying to get the site up. all it took was 3 extra people. And then they wouldn't have looked nearly as bad.
@Shimes Yes, let's talk about wasting tax payer money. The Obammunists have already spent $640 million on their failed web site. Â
Happi
The WA State Commiss know that the policies canceled are now ILLEGAL under ObamaCare LAW! That is why they were canceled!
ObamaCare has to go forward as it is OR ObamaCare has to DIE 100 Percent!!
Remember ObamaCare has been upheld by the Supreme Court and is the Law of The Land - Acording to Obama!
@Happi    worst case: the horse has left the barn. the genie is out of the bottle. try to put the horse back in the barn or the genie in the bottle. let us know how well it works.
@ScottHÂ This is probably exactly the sort of thing that the White House is hoping for. Â It will deflect the blame to others.
@VoiceofReason That all depends on who is counting the votes senor
@VoiceofReason You must be talking about George Bush Jr. Here is the truth; republicans hate Obama because he won twice by a large margin and because he is black. They continue to block him every step of the way but he continues to move forward. And the tea party even tries to shutdown the government and blame Obama. I think he is probably one of the smartest and most eloquent presidents we have had and he can actually speak using clear and intelligent English. He is amazing because he is constantly fighting the right wingers and their crazy propositions simply to make sure that our first black president doesn't succeed. Yes race is a factor in his presidency, but the most wonderful thing is that all these plots and hateful strategies backfire every time and next year Congress will revert to the democrats and the tea party will be put in its place by us the People of the United State of America. God Bless My Country and God Bless our First Black President.Â
@Andrew Davis He lied about being sorry that he lied, because he's not sorry.
@Andrew Davis Unfortunately, some of his supporters are so blind that they still claim that none of what the detractors said would happen has happened.  They worship is POS so much that he can do no wrong in their eyes.
@Andrew Davis All of us who saw the mess coming were called "racist, homophobic, tea bag anarchist."Â
Liberals attacked those of us with common sense/ logic for speaking out in an endeavor to avert this mess.Â
You know what's utterly sad? Liberals are now attacking those who've lost their insurance -- and outraged over ObamaCare -- Â and calling them "racist, homophobic, tea bag anarchist."Â
@Andrew Davis So when did Congress pass changes to the implementation date? I missed that. Or did Congress pass the Enabling Acts while I wasn't looking?
@SoTweetie It's for the "greater good" of the people that get food stamps and free healthcare. Goodbye middle class......goodbye. If there weren't so many people milking the system this program may have worked. I am self-employed. I used to have health insurance but have been rolling the dice because a top of the line plan would cost me (a 48 year old man) about $400/mo w/ a $1500 deductible. I should have been thankful and bit the bullet. Now that I am FORCED to buy insurance my deductible is X3 the original amount (at least) with an increased monthly payment. This whole "act" is nothing more than an "act". I voted for this dip%$#! 2X. Shame on me.Â
@SoTweetie And yet, they keep exempting themselves and their supporters from it.... hmmmm....
@Travis @ScottH Probably so... I don't think they're going to find it quite so easy this time.
@Socialjusticeforall He's not black or white to me. He's just a president. That makes anyone claiming i'm racist, a complete moron. I won't even address the rest of your post. You nullified it by bringing race into it.
@Socialjusticeforall @VoiceofReason "Here's the truth", followed by liberal opinions. Good job, buddy.
"If you tell a lie often enough, loud enough, and long enough, the myth will become accepted as a fact. " - Dave Ramsey
@Socialjusticeforall Does race have anything to do with the left's hatred for Senator Cruz?
Nope. Obama is blocking himself with his nefarious actions. All the kool-aid in the world isn't going to blind enough Americans to the plain and clear fact this legislative monstrosity is disrupting the lives of untold millions of Americans. Pray and worship at Obama's statue as you will.. and spin his evil as you must... but even liberals' minds are becoming focused onto the massive fraud that is Obamacare.Â
And tell us.. just how brilliant and awesome is this "god" of yours when he knowingly perpetrates a falsehood more than 35 times to sell what he knew all along was going end in massive failure?
@Socialjusticeforall @VoiceofReasonÂ
Just like you are going to dismiss this comment because I am a woman. Â Let's get past the excuses. Â I, personally, don't agree with the path he has chosen. Â It's all about method and I find I disagree with how the Democratic party problem solves.
The hard work would be too controversial. Â I believe in term limits, Congress being a public service and not a retirement option, and kicking a lot of the legislation down to state level. Â It's like a company with too many middle managers, it's ineffective.Â
@Socialjusticeforall @VoiceofReason OK... c'mon... looking for that sarcasm tag.Â
Please tell us you don't really believe all that tripe.
@Socialjusticeforall
No one mentioned race but you.
@Socialjusticeforall I think he is probably one of the smartest and most eloquent presidents we have had and he can actually speak using clear and intelligent English. He is amazing...
Clean and articulate-Joe Biden
@Socialjusticeforall Â
@VoiceofReason Many of us consider Mr. Obama as much white as black.
2) Many of do not hate Mr. Obama. We find him arrogant and often foolish and consistently making decisions for OUR country with which we do not agree.Â
3) Many of us agree that he is smart. eloquent is a stretch because of the known use of the teleprompter and script writers.
4) Many of us have too many worries of our own to care about Mr. Obama's race. The cost of healthcare for the average working American for one.
5) As for clear and intelligent English, please remember he was educated in very expensive private schools. Check out Punahou..Â
6) Mr. Obama won the Presidency because he had the best campaign. He had very wealthy contributors. Some may refer to Mr. Obama as a plutocrat.
@VoiceofReason @Andrew Davis lol
@King Leer He has side stepped the Constitution nine times on this one issue and countless other times on everything else. He is a crook and should be prosecuted.
@RN1 @SoTweetie What exemptions are these? Got a link?
@RN1Â @SoTweetieÂ
They all laughed when I referenced the "rice fields" and "struggle sessions."
Oh, that's just Leer, good-natured crank.
Who's laughing now?
Well, here at the Schadenfreude Club, we all are.
@King Leer He can't speak unless he has a teleprompter... no prompter and he is all over the place, mumbling ahhs and ohs and waits
@King Leer @SocialjusticeforallÂ
I called him being President when he spoke at the Democratic convention. Â I don't envy his job but I don't agree with his line of reasoning. Â I am also very happy that I can say that and I don't have to watch my back.
@T_BONE_WALKER @King Leer If he was republican he would have already been impeached.
