SILVERDALE, Wash. -- A 17-year-old girl was hit by a pickup truck while walking her brother to school on Wednesday morning.
Kitsap County sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson said the teen was in a crosswalk when she was hit about 7:15 a.m. in front of Fairview Junior High.
She suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she was listed in serious condition in the intensive-care unit.
"She's got a good team around her... that will do the best they can for her and help her overcome this trauma," said hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg-Hanson.
The driver who hit the girl stopped at the scene and was being interviewed by deputies, but Wilson said the circumstances of the collision are still under investigation.
Wilson said the girl who was hit is a student at Olympic High School. Her brother was not injured.

I know her. She's in my 4th period class :(
She goes to my church, we are all just so shocked right now. During our devotional prayer I could hear many of the brethren crying, lot's tears and Kleenex being passed around. Prayers for her and family Â
Am sorry for those involved.
You people need to stop fighting, if you want to debate on this and stop it from happening again, then do it, but for goodness sake, just say you feel sorry for the girl and the family members that are going through this, they are having a really tough time right now most likely. i was there at fairview when this happened, -note: im a student- and i dont know the girl but i still wish she has a full recovery, is living through the holidays and is alive for years. im not saying that you shouldnt end the conversation on people speeding in a school zone, im just saying that you should pay your respects to the family and do something about the speeding somewhere else. Please and thank you.
 @Prussia point taken.
Â
In life you have several "learning points". Â
Â
You will have many in yours. Â Here we have a few learning points.
Â
This is one. Â Don't speed while driving in a school zone, pay attention to cross walks (this one had flashing lights), don't text/talk and drive, drive slower if the conditions are dark or foggy etc...
Â
It saves lives and it saves pain.
Â
Â
@sunnysandiego  @Prussia Yes, i know, im going to learn how to drive in a year or two and i know what to do and what not to do, what to look out for and what to watch. but thank you for pointing that out, now some people will read that and hopefully remember those rules of the road, and it does help a lot if people know those things.
Prayers for a speedy recovery for her and comfort for her brother and the driver. Glad the driver stopped and is cooperating with the investigation. Just another story that reminds us to be more aware of our surroundings.
At least this guy stopped.
I go to Fairview Jr High, I myself did not see the accident, but I did however see all the commotion, today has been a horrible day for Fairview Falcons..
@Sami Girl Everyday is a horrible day for that school . Everybody there SUCKS.
Surprise, another wreckless Truck driver. All I see these days are negligent truck drivers on the road.   They are giving Rednecks a bad name!
@grayfox I see more reckless drivers in cars than in trucks. It's a problem that persists no matter what vehicle people drive.
@grayfox the truck was a pickup truck and the driver was a 64 year old woman who stayed at the scene and gave aid until rescue workers arrived.
@JUSTONEPROUDMOM old women have slow reactions; it's a fact.
Just because you are in a cross walk does not guarantee your safety. Keep your eyes on approaching vehicles at all times.Â
I went to that Jr. High and I know what the people say about it being dark that early. Scary situation. Prayers go up for her and her family, especially her brother.
Hope she has a speedy recovery. Â Poor girl. Â
The young lady couldn't be in a better place to get THE most excellent care. My heart goes out to her and her family. Such a sad accident to happen at this time of year.
I sure hope she is ok.
God speed young lady.... My heart breaks for you and your family. Sending out prayers and hoping for a full recovery. sad. :(
Don't whine to me about cameras in school zones, this is a perfect yet horrible example of what is at stake in a society where people don't like taking personal responsibility...which is why we need laws and such.
@Citizen#3457899654 It is a horrible accident, and I hope the girl recovers.  Hopefully they will update the story with more information about the accident.  Without more information it is hard to tell if cameras would have made any difference.  Â
when someone gets hit by a falling meteorite that is an accident.
Â
when a person gets hit by a car driven by another human that is not an accident. Â that is always someone not paying attention, driving to fast, texting, taking a risk walking or in their car, etc....
Â
Unfortunately too many times, this happens as a result of the driver doing something in their car OTHER than paying attention to driving.
Â
Sad ending here I hope she pulls through and make a full recover.
@sunnysandiego I'm not saying this incidence was the case, but sometimes people walk across a street, in the dark and THEY aren't paying attention. Too busy on their phones or ipods. Heck this happens in daylight. There isn't always enough time for a car/truck to stop depending on the speed limit of that road. Don't put all the blame on the driver. Sometimes it really was the pedestrian's fault.
@Justmyside83 just today I watched a woman drive through a busy street eating a bagel and texting while driving nonchalently on
Â
This was a school zone btw.... so the proof for the driver goes higher not the walker
Â
@sunnysandiego She was in a crosswalk in front of a school, no less! Â
@Doxie exactly my point.  Sad to all parties but someone cause great harm to another due to carelessness
@sunnysandiego @Doxie Neither of you know the full details until the police release their report; I suggest both of you wait for the full story
@sunnysandiego Yeah, no kidding.  The TV version said the school zone lights were flashing too.  I don't know how someone could miss those at that hour.  I came through a school zone today around 3:00, lights flashing, and the car in front of me just sped right through at about 40 mph, without even blinking, I assume, even though there were kids and parents all over the place.  Couldn't believe it........
@sunnysandiego Unless it was intentional, it was an accident. Quit skewing the story; its about a girl that got hit and is in the hospital. If you want to rant about the granularity of defining the word "Accident", then take your elementary school english teacher.
@northwestsurfer  @sunnysandiego so if I am texting after drinking a 6 pack and don't see someone walking through a cross walk in a school zone I have no responsibility?
Â
wow no wonder we have so many people who kill people driving drunk or driving while texting or driving while speeding
Â
from the silverdale newspaper "She was struck while using the crosswalk at the south end of Fairview Junior High by Conifer Drive on Central Valley Road."
Â
last I checked it's the law to yield to cross walks AND the speed limit is 20 in a school zone. Â but sure like everything else go ahead and pick and choose your legal battles and by all means, don't hold the person accountable for how their actions caused this.
Â
Â
@sunnysandiego "A 62-year-old Bremerton woman heading south hit her, according to Kitsap County"
"The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with sheriff's deputies who are investigating. Central Valley Road was closed in front of Fairview during the investigation. Deputies do not believe speed or alcohol or drugs were involved"
Does not say anywhere in there that texting was involved, or even negligent driving. It very well could have been either, but perhaps you could wait until details are released, and knock off the witchhunt. I myself was hit by a truck while in a crosswalk and it was determined that the driver who hit me was not at fault. Keep running your mouth, idiot.
http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2012/dec/12/pedestrian-flown-harborview-after-being-hit-car/#ixzz2EuTv3S9w"
@sunnysandiego It's dark here at 7 in the morning. It's very possible that they stepped into the crosswalk assuming that the car saw them. Happens all the time, and when it's dark, it's impossible to make eye contact.  I hope that she recovers fully.  There is no indication that the driver was doing anything wrong.  Why not wait for the report before you speculate wildly.  I just know that it's dark at that time of morning, and even going the 20mph, you can hurt someone badly by hitting them with your car.Â
@TrT @sunnysandiego It is up to the driver to be aware of the cross walks and pay attention. They are marked.
@The WA Mama  @TrT  @sunnysandiego my point exactly.
Â
you are in a cross walk in a school zone I don't care if it's raining or dark you have 3000 lbs of steel vs a body or a bike you better be paying attention and driving slow.
Â
Today I was at the hospital and I witnessed a young lady drive through a cross walk eating a bagel AND texting on her phone.
Â
did this happen here, I don't know. Â But something cause this person to not see another human and hurt them
@The WA Mama  @TrT  @sunnysandiego A pitch black rainy morning. A driver CAN be paying complete attention and still have this happen. I see people all the time dressed in black/dark clothing, pretty much impossible to see until you are right on top of them. Anyone entering a crosswalk also needs to pay attention and make sure the car has completely stopped before proceeding. And it would help if they work reflective clothing or light-colored clothing. Carry a flashlight so you're seen. I'm not passing judgement on the driver yet until I hear more.
"The driver who hit the girl stopped at the scene..." Â It's a Christmas miracle. Â I can hardly believe someone did the right thing. Â I really hope she will be ok. Â Can't imagine getting that phone call as a parent.
@belsnickles Oh c'mon, don't be a drama queen.  99.9% of drivers stop after an accident.Â
@belsnickles That was my first thought too... I'm so glad they stopped.
That area in front of Fairview Junior High is constantly bombarded with speeders. I pray for her recovery.
