Student brings homemade device to Stadium High

TACOMA, Wash. -- A student brought what appeared to be a homemade explosive device to Stadium High School on Wednesday, prompting an evacuation.
School District spokeswoman Stacy Flores said the device was found about 9:30 a.m. All students and staff members were safely evacuated.
The evacuation order was lifted after police seized the device and took the student into custody.
The century-old school has about 2,000 students and is known for its castle-like architecture.

This incident is a good example of the reason that banning guns will not solve the school massacre problem. And students do frequently bring explosive devices to school, but the incidents are infrequently reported to the police. Many administrators want to preserve the good name of their school and are not enthusiastic about reporting incidents that might detract from the school's image. The public is not fully aware of the happenings in schools. Only insiders, as I have been know; and sometimes even teachers and other staff members find out about a dangerous situation long after it happens. The problem can be most effectively prevented by establishing effective school security and banning the psychiatric drugs that cause violent behavior, like the one Adam Lanza was taking. Ninety percent of school shooters and other mass killers have been drugged up to do violence by dangerous medications. Why is this fact not considered by the media?
@Mary Let's look at this. At Columbine, two suicidal idiots sought to blow up a school while shooting classmates they felt offended by. Unable to obtain real explosives, they bought several propane cylinders and rigged them so that (they thought) they would explode. None did. The biggest "explosives" that kids ever bring to school are generally M80s. And believe me, school administrators DO report these things now.
Not too sure about the drugs: kids get illegal drugs and they get prescription drugs. Some prescription anti-depressants have been implicated in suicides - which is what these mass shootings are really all about.
Statistically, when guns are removed, the murders formerly attributed to firearms are simply eliminated and other methods DO NOT increase to replace them. For example, the non-firearm murder and suicide rates in the UK are very similar to the U.S. - but the firearm-involved cases are all but zero due to strict gun laws. Some people don't want to believe that, but it is true nonetheless.
Â
@Mary Because it's untrue. There is no way with today's social media and blaber mouth teens that any incendiary devices brought on campus and found would not e brought to the attention of law enforcement so no principal that wanted to keep his job would keep it from the police. And studies show that only 25% of ass shooters can be classified as insane (I refer to the Stone study), although who can really know.Â
@justsaying  @Mary What is an "ass shooter"?
 @SeattleJoe  @Mary OOPS mass shooters. Although. . .Â
Diet Coke and Mento's
Vinegar and Baking Powder
Drain cleaner and Aluminum foil
Dry ice and water
Marsh mellow and Microwave

The horror of homemade explosives!
@al_wa None of which provide lethal power as a rule because they are not actually "explosives" but rather just contained pressure that - only if designed properly - may rupture and make some noise.
@al_wa You should have seen what I took to school. It scared the holy hell out of my science teacher at first then after some modifications they put it in a display case for students to watch. There are so many dangerous things out there its limitless.
@SeattleJoe Political correctness is trumping innovation and creativity.
That actually is one of the cooler looking high schools I have seen. Stupid article, but nice picture. You would think it was someplace in Europe.
Â
I made a homemade device once and brought it to school. I think it was a birthday cake for my teacher.
@pbs7mm I used to live nearby. It's a stunning school right on the edge of the hill overlooking Commencement Bay. I would always wonder if the kids understood how beautiful their campus was.Â
@lakeview Thanks for the kind reply. It reminded my of Austria. Very pretty. Nothing like the high school I went to years ago.  :0) Looks fabulous.
@pbs7mm  @lakeview It is featured inthe film "10 Things I Hate About You" starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. The S you see int he courtyard is a P in the movie, for the fictional Padua high school. Great clips on youtube show off the school nicely. My son was in the first graduating class that went there following the remodel. Beautiful.Â
what a misleading headline if I ever saw one. A "device" could be anything. Article is vague and uninformed at best.
@northwestsurfer Me thinks it was meant to be sensationalistic. Typical KOMO sadly.
@northwestsurfer My first thought when I read the headline was: "So what? My kids took homemade devices to school every year (science projects)."
Stupid kid. Should have known better.
man, if he wasn't careful there would have only been like 8 things i hate about youÂ
What? He brought a firework to school? Why, he could have blown off a finger. Time to ban fireworks at the federal level.
Oh, say it isn't so.
Where's Dexter when you need him?
Ban students!
It was a firework according to other news sources. A lot of overreaction over nothing, but the kid was stupid considering recent history.Â
 @dg54321 Good grief...
@dg54321 Firework according to Tacoma Police. Kid was arrested and expelled.Â
Did you (KOMO) get this story via Tweets? There sure isn't much here and what there is is vague. How 'bout some real reporting?
Â
KIRO has at least a little more: "Stadium High School in Tacoma was evacuated Wednesday morning after a student brought a homemade explosive device to school with the intention of blowing it up on New Yearâs Eve."
Â
Yeah a homemade device could be anything. I've done it all the time. Actually did prompt a mad rush out the door. Well what does one expect? People just love homemade chocolate chip cookies! ;) Seriously though, I hope it actually was a susppicious device. Wouldn't want to scare everybody with a witchhunt.
Voldemort fails once again to defeat Hogwarts!
Bad title again KOMO
Â
That's funny
...so this wasn't "show & tell" day?
For a minute there I thought the "device" was a pie or something.
