EVERETT, Wash. -- Despondent after a domestic dispute, police say a suicidal man set fire to a sailboat while he was inside it Tuesday night.

Police first responded to the Everett Marina at about 8:20 p.m. after getting a call about a domestic dispute. When they arrived, officers learned a man inside a docked boat was threatening suicide.

At roughly 9 p.m., police realized the man had set fire to the boat and immediately called the Everett Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived moments later and were able to knock the fire down.

The suicidal man jumped ship when the smoke got too heavy. He was taken to Providence Hospital for evaluation, but police do not believe he was seriously injured.

There were no other injuries, but police say the boat has extensive damage.
