Supporters hold vigil for local man imprisoned in Nicaragua
SEATTLE -- Family and friends of Jason Puracal gathered Wednesday night to mark a bitter anniversary.

It was one year ago that the former Seattle resident and University of Washington graduate was convicted on drug charges in Nicaragua.

Puracal's family maintains the trial was a sham, and on Wednesday they held a candlelight vigil for him at the University of Washington's Red Square.

"Jason's still fighting, and even though we've been fighting for 22 months, it's not over and we need everybody's support to bring him home," said Puracal's sister, Janis Puracal.

Supporters also delivered a petition signed by 112,000 people to the Nicaraguan embassy in Los Angeles calling for Puracal's release.

Puracal, 35, recently presented an appeal to the court in Nicaragua, but no decision has been made.
