MONTESANO, Wash. -- The man accused of assaulting a sheriff's deputy and a judge at the Grays Harbor County courthouse last week returned to court on Monday, this time in handcuffs.
Steven Kravetz, who was captured over the weekend, said nothing as he walked into the courtroom, flanked by two deputies.
Kravetz is accused of shooting and stabbing Deputy Polly Davin, who only sustained a shoulder wound thanks to the quick action of Judge David Edwards, who rushed to her aid.
Despite having been stabbed himself, Edwards was back on the bench on Monday.
"I just thought it was important for me to be here, performing my job," he said.
Edwards said the incident on Friday unfolded so quickly that he did not have time to consider his own peril.
"From the time that he saw the gun and ripped it from her hands, and then immediately turned it and shot her twice -- we're talking a couple of seconds," he said.
On Monday, Edwards steered clear of Kravetz's court proceedings, which was handled by a judge from nearby Lewis County.
Kravetz never looked up as the charges of assault were read, along with previous domestic violence charges from several years ago when his mother, Roberta Dougherty, accused him of hurting her.
But the mention of past charges brought a quick response from Kravetz: "Both me and my mother are objecting to the validity of the complaints, the accusations made by the sheriff's department regarding that case."
It was Dougherty's own mother who turned him in over the weekend, saying she had no idea he was the wanted man when she drove him from Montesano to Olympia during the manhunt.
Kravetz has been accused of similar actions in the past. In 2008, he was reportedly being questioned by two Centralia police officers when he started attacking them. The officers subdued him with a Taser. After they handcuffed him, they found a knife in his pocket.
Kravetz is being held on $750,000 bail.

We have been looking for Steven for 20 some years. His mother Roberta and cut all contact with his father and us. Then all of a sudden he and his mother were all over the news and intranet. We don't even know if they know that his father Steve Kravetz is dead.
