STANWOOD, Wash. -- A suspected bank robber was wounded by a Stanwood police officer late Tuesday morning after the officer interrupted the robbery in progress.
Police say the officer happened upon the robbery at the Key Bank in the 26600 block of 72nd Ave NW just before 11 a.m.,
Details remain sketchy, but a foot chase ensued and went across the street to the nearby Haggen's grocery store. At some point, shots were fired and the robber was hit.
He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he was listed in critical condition and in the intensive care unit.
Officers have confirmed the robber had a gun on him during the robbery and they are still investigating whether the robber fired any shots. Neither the officer nor anyone in the bank were hurt.
Officials did say the officer had been in the area in a proactive role because of a recent string of nearby robberies. He is a 14-year veteran of the department and has been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure.

Dammit offiers go back to the gun range and aim higher... I mean if your goign to hit low make sure you hit him in the balls next time...
What a shame. Another promising career as a criminal brought to a bloody end.
Next time please remember to double tap the center of mass for a more effective take down. Just a PSA for all law enforcement out there.
It isn't sounding like the robber shot at the police officer, why was he shot at? and in this country we give necessarily medical aid regardless of ability to pay or guilt in crime.
@MmMerrifield I happened to be nearby when it went down and was listening on the scanner when I heard the officer yelling shots had been fired several times. I don't know if they rendered aid to him after he was secured. But funny thing is that there was a medical clinic right next door. Maybe they could have gotten a doctor to assist until he was airlifted?
@MmMerrifield You branish a firearm at a cop, he WILL shoot you. I would rather see a cop go home to his family that night then some dirt bag thief get his feelings hurt.
Makes you wish for better days, like when all that used to be there was The Farmette!
@Ranger Rick oh...the Farmette!!! used to go there at lunch once we had open campus starting junior year and get some of their greasy tacos...brilliant!! Only The Farmette and farmland used to occupy all that space. Now it's all shopping and homes. It's not badly done, it's just kinda sad.
Wow, someone that actually deserved to be shot by the police. Â
 @sfvcyco You're really cool.
Good! Â
Good job officer! Too bad he didn't get the head shot.
Wow, my childhood Mayberry is no more, I can't picture a string of robberies in Stanwood...unreal.
Glad my Father didn't live to see what has become of our little corner of the world,.It's been eaten up
by greedy realtors and urban sprawl from Everett northward.. .Condos, strip malls and big city crime has
found Stanwood. Guess it's true, you can't go home again.
Nice shooting! What is frustrating with these incidents is the resources they are putting into the suspect...why airlift him?? That is a $20k ticket I am pretty sure WE and not HIMÂ will be paying. Ground transport that POS at best, use our EMS professionals for citizens.
Better him than the cops. Good job officers.
Awesome. Would love to see the police and homeowners take out all of this trash that tries to rob or burglarize.Â
Good. People who choose to rob banks deserve the gallows.
Can't wait to see the scumbag in a episode of "Hardtime."
Them ganstas in Stanwood now! No little place immune any more. Nice shooting !
