INDEX, Wash. -- A police chase in Snohomish County ended in a violent head-on crash that killed a suspected drunk driver.

A Snohomish County deputy first spotted an erratic driver heading eastbound on Highway 2 Monday evening at roughly 6:30 p.m.

The deputy hit his lights and stopped the driver near Gold Bar. Details of what happened next are sketchy, but at some point during the traffic stop the suspected drunk driver sped off, according to Aaron Snell with the Snohomish Multiple Agency Response Team.

"At this exact moment it's unknown if he was outside his vehicle or not. Obviously, detectives will be talking with deputies to figure out what occurred at that time," Snell said.

The deputy gave chase and was soon joined by a second deputy. The pursuit continued until the erratic driver crossed into the westbound lane and crashed head on into an oncoming car near Mount Index River Road, according to the sheriff's office.

The pursuing deputies were unable to avoid the wreck, and both patrol cars crashed.

The suspected drunk driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver, an 86-year-old man, was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for unknown injuries.

Both deputies suffered minor injuries, but both are expected to be fine.

All lanes of Highway 2 near index are blocked to traffic and could stay that way well into Tuesday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.
