Suspected shoplifter shot, killed by Centralia officer

CENTRALIA, Wash. - A Centralia police officer shot and killed a suspected shoplifter Sunday morning at a South Tower Street Mini-Mart.

Police arrived at 520 South Tower Avenue in response to a report of a man stealing a burrito.

When officers arrived, they confronted the man, and officers say he "became belligerent." A K-9 Unit was deployed to help control the man who officers say was fighting his arrest.

The man then pulled a handgun out of his pocket, and the K-9 Unit bit his arm. During the scuffle, an officer observed the handgun and opened fire.

Officials confirm the 43-year-old man died at the scene.

The officer who shot the suspected shoplifter is a 15-year veteran of the department, said Centralia police.
