Tacoma officer involved in crash while heading to burglary

TACOMA, Wash. -- A Tacoma police officer and another driver are OK after they were involved in a crash Friday morning.

The officer was responding to a burglary in progress around 11:30 a.m. but as he traveled down N. Union Ave., he was struck by another car at N. 11th St., said Loretta Cool with Tacoma police.

The impact sent the patrol across the intersection and into a light pole. The officer's air bag deployed and he was trapped inside for a short period of time, but once he was able to free himself, he was able to get out of the car and walk, Cool said. The officer was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

The other driver suffered minor injuries, Cool said.

Investigators said the other driver didn't show any signs of impairment.

The accident is still under investigation.
