Teen gets 31 years for killing dad in dispute over car
SOUTH BEND, Wash. (AP) - A South Bend teenager who killed his father two years ago in a dispute over driving privileges was sentenced to 31 years in prison.
Now 18, Devon R. Moore was given the maximum sentence last week in a Pacific County court.
The Daily News reports he pleaded guilty to murder with a firearm in the shooting death of Timothy Moore.
Moore told his son he could have a car as long as he stayed on the honor roll. But, when he didn't make the honor roll in November 2010, they quarreled.
Prosecutors say Devon Moore shot his father four times as he slept, buried the body in a remote area and told people his father was missing. Woodcutters found the body.

Wow, shoot your father to death because you had your driving privileges revoked? Please, someone shoot this POS.
I'm really surprised that this teen got 31-year sentence, usually in WA this would be less than 5 years with reduced time from good behaviour.
 @3rase You mean "behavior?"
I'm glad this dumb punk ain't gonna have the chance to become a father.
Shoot your Dad?!?!?! I'm 54, and have never even raised my voice to my Dad!! (Or my Mom!)
And yes, we had guns in the house....in an unlocked cabinet. I never even thought of harming my parents!
But then I guess I was brought up in a whole different time period.
Well, that's one less 'entitled' brat running around.
Glad they threw the maximum penalty at this worthless POS young man. Sounds like he had the entitlement attitude. Hope he enjoys the time spent in prison. Wonder if he will do the whole 31 years?Â
Gives a whole new twist for the stupid 'my kid is an honor roll student' bumper stickers

Â
"Moore didnât make the honor roll and the father and son quarreled on Nov. 2, 2010. Moore âstewedâ about it in his room and then got a .22 caliber rifle from a spare room, went into his fatherâs bedroom while he was asleep and shot him four times in the head. Prosecutors noted that Moore used a bolt-action weapon, which meant he had to place a new round in the chamber to fire each shot."
Â
No winners in this story, very sad for the family.
Â
Another example to make an effort to keep your guns locked up....even from your seemingly responsible teenage kids. Sure this kid would have found some other weapon but why risk free access to a firearm? It just gives the bean counters more fuel to threaten to take away all our guns.
@barkingmad I can not agree with your last statement.

@DarkParty Interesting article but it's only one story, here's a study out of Emory University concluding "For every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were four unintentional shootings, seven criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides."

The anti-gun lobbyists use these tax payer funded studies to make the argument to take away our guns.

I'm glad to see that a murderer is finally getting a substantial sentence for their crime and not just a slap on the wrist.
@Tattooed_Angel  Yeah, if he had really wanted to get away with it, he should have used a car. He would have spent 2 years in jail tops.
This was a horrible waste of 2 lives (his and his father's) as well as a traumatic event to their family and friends. Obviously this young man was emotionally defective (how do you kill your father?) but I would also have to question his sanity in general. I dont mean that he should get an easy out due to insanity but does a SANE person shoot his father?
@scared_citizen  It really makes no difference whether he was mentally defective or not. Insanity is a legal term and means he does not know right from wrong.
You're no longer on the honor roll stupid. Your driving privileges have been revoked. So has your life.Â
If this happened two years ago, he obviously was 16. Doesn't sound like he spent much time on the honor roll.Â
You mean people aren't so quick to blame the parents when they are the victims? Â How come if this kid killed someone other than his father you would see comments blaming the parents. Â Just maybe, kids with good parents will still make poor decisions.
Well that didn't work out so well for him because as far as I know, there are no driving privleges in prison (although maybe I'm worng about that. Seems most prisoners have more privleges than I do these days).
My condolenses to the family.  Wow the father was just trying to teach his child a life lesson and help him to appreciate the privilege of driving a car.   I swear kids these days just feel entitled to everything they see and when they dont get it things like this happen.   Well I guess he will learn some life lessons now courtesy of his new cellmate.   Good luck you little waste of space, maybe when you finally get out of prison you will look back and realize what your Dad was trying to teach you wasnt such a bad thing.Â
Dad did what every good parent should - make having the use of a car at a young age an earned priviledge.  Punk/brat deserves everything he's got comin to him...
what a stupid kid!!! Â probably two years now, he is regretting and crying every moment.
@i need some... He's probably regretting the impact on himself, it sounds like he got through that first five months of being the tragically orphaned victim just fine.Â
@i need some... actually he has no remorse!
My parents had the exact same rule...and I managed to stay on the honor roll.
Â
the kid has no one to blame but himself for letting his grades slip, and killing his dad was totally unnecessary. My prayers and sympathy to the rest of the family...what a senseless, needless murder.
My sympathy for the family. For the kid, no more driving for the next 31 years or longer. Perhaps never. Enjoy your stay in prison.
@STK Yeah, Bubba's gettin' a new girlfriend!
