Teen hit by train while sitting on tracks near Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A freight train struck and seriously injured a teenager early Sunday as he was sitting on the tracks near a crossing near Bellingham, authorities said.

The 17-year-old boy sitting down between the rails at about 2 a.m. as a BNSF train was heading south about 15 mph west of the Bellingham, said railroad spokesman Gus Melonas.

The train's crew sounded the horn repeatedly, but the boy did not get off the tracks and was struck. He was knocked clear of the tracks and sustained internal injuries and lacerations to the head from the impact, Melonas said.

He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
