Teenage boy nearly drowns in Federal Way lake

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- A 17-year-old boy was rushed to Harborview Medical Center Friday night after nearly drowning in Federal Way's Steel Lake Park.
The boy was swimming with friends just after 8 p.m. when one of his friends noticed him struggling to stay afloat and then disappearing under water, according to South King Fire & Rescue Asst. Chief Gordie Olson.
A rescue team responded and found the boy submerged in roughly 12 feet of water. They pulled him from the water, but Olson said he'd likely been under for about 15 minutes.
Paramedics immediately began working on the boy and were eventually able to get a heart rhythm started.
He was taken to Harborview in critical condition.
